    Scheduling in additive manufacturing problems

    Get PDF
Scheduling problems in additive manufacturing is a problem that can involve considerably morecomplexity than single-stage scheduling problems, since machines can process more than one partwith different geometries simultaneously [1]. To achieve efficiency in terms of the used capacity of themachine, it is necessary to group as many parts as possible in a single job. Since the use of themachines in terms of time depends on the job being processed, how parts are grouped within eachjob comes critical. This implies that the resolution of the nesting problem will have a direct impact onthe objective function of the jobs Schedule. In this work, the objective function to be minimized is theTotal Completion time, wich is obtained by the sum of the completion time of each job. The biggestdifficulty is that the problem is NP-Hard [2], so a purely mathematical approach is insufficient. For thisreason, a hybrid method is proposed that allows linking the benefits of an approach based onmathematical programming but enhanced by heuristic methods. In this way, heuristics are developedthat address the nesting problem incorporating knowledge about the nature of the problem, such asthe influence of the parameters “height” and volume” of the parts in the definition of the Jobs; and thestructure of its solutions. Then, using mathematical programming, solve the scheduling in paralleladditive manufacturing machines. For the nesting stage, several heuristics were proposed andcompared, showing that those heuristics that best captured the influence of the parameterscontributed more to solving the problem.Fil: Rodriguez, Jeanette. The United States has the appalling distinction of leading the world with its incarceration rate, which is five times that of other countries. One in thirty-five U.S. adults is under some form of correctional supervision. The result is that seventy million people—nearly one in three U.S. adults—must endure the stigma of having an arrest or conviction record. Any contact with the criminal justice system, no matter how minor, can be a modern-day scarlet letter

Radiotherapy for SCCHN is a challenge because the head and neck contain several critical organs that should receive minimal doses of radiation. These organs include the eyes, parotid glands, brainstem, spinal cord, mandible, and thyroid gland. Approaches like image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) combined with volumetric modulated arc therapy hold the promise to focus radiation to the planning target volume and spare nearby structures while observing potential changes to patient anatomy during treatment to determine whether replanning is required. IGRT, however, requires the frequent imaging of patients to update the treatment plan. In this retrospective study, we present our findings of SCCHN patients treated in a public hospital in Peru. The patients reflected overall demographic trends associated with SCCHN. Each patient was imaged using computed tomography once before radiotherapy and once by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) during treatment, for a total of two images. Tumor displacement, planning target volume, gross tumor volume, and neck diameter were compared between the two images. Among the measurements, only a small statistically significant increase in gross tumor volume was observed between the images. However, a minority of patients did experience changes to anatomy, which highlights the need for continued research into criteria to determine which patients are likely to benefit from treatment replanning due to intra-treatment anatomical changes. Alternatively, a lack of frequent CBCT imaging before each session, due to high patient flows and limited staff resources, made it difficult to observe transient changes and trends in each patient. We conclude that the treatment and outcome improvements associated with IGRT are likely associated with frequent imaging during radiotherapy and properly selecting which patients will benefit most from this resource-intensive technique

Support and Training for the Evaluation of Programs (STEPs) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is a leader in conducting evaluations and needs assessments for social service programs. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS) Drug Overdose Prevention (DOP) program entered a contract with STEPs in the Fall of 2020 to complete a needs assessment involving the impact of COVID-19 on substance abuse treatment and drug overdose prevention. STEPs wishes to acknowledge the DOP staff, especially Davidson Wissing, for their continued engagement. STEPs would also like to acknowledge and thank the many survey respondents and interview participants who shared how COVID-19 impacted them, their clients, and their provision of substance abuse treatment. STEPs is grateful for their time, candor, and expertise, especially amid the additional stress of the COVID-19 pandemic

The purpose of this needs assessment is to deepen DOP’s (NE DHHS Drug Overdose Prevention (DOP) program) understanding of individuals’ drug use behaviors in Nebraska through the lens of treatment providers. The results of this study will aid DOP in providing training and other resources to treatment centers, focusing prevention efforts, and informing their strategic plan and future studies. Ultimately, this study will support DOP’s efforts to reduce opioid-involved fatal and non-fatal overdoses in Nebraska

Quercetin attenuates adipose hypertrophy, in part through activation of adipogenesis in rats fed a high-fat diet

An impaired capacity of adipose tissue expansion leads to adipocyte hypertrophy, inflammation and insulin resistance (IR) under positive energy balance. We previously showed that a grape pomace extract, rich in flavonoids including quercetin (Q), attenuates adipose hypertrophy. This study investigated whether dietary Q supplementation promotes adipogenesis in the epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) of rats consuming a high-fat diet, characterizing key adipogenic regulators in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes. Consumption of a high-fat diet for 6 weeks caused IR, increased plasma TNFα concentrations, eWAT weight, adipocyte size and the eWAT/brown adipose tissue (BAT) ratio. These changes were accompanied by decreased levels of proteins involved in angiogenesis, VEGF-A and its receptor 2 (VEGF-R2), and of two central adipogenic regulators, i.e. PPARγ and C/EBPα, and proteins involved in mature adipocyte formation, i.e. fatty acid synthase (FAS) and adiponectin. Q significantly reduced adipocyte size and enhanced angiogenesis and adipogenesis without changes in eWAT weight and attenuated systemic IR and inflammation. In addition, high-fat diet consumption increased eWAT hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) levels and those of proteins involved in adipose inflammation (TLR-4, CD68, MCP-1, JNK) and activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, i.e. ATF-6 and XBP-1. Q mitigated all these events. Q and quercetin 3-glucoronide prevented TNFα-mediated downregulation of adipogenesis during 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes early differentiation. Together, Q capacity to promote a healthy adipose expansion enhancing angiogenesis and adipogenesis may contribute to reduced adipose hypertrophy, inflammation and IR. Consumption of diets rich in Q could be useful to counteract the adverse effects of high-fat diet-induced adipose dysfunction.Fil: Perdicaro, Diahann Jeanette.
