    VLA Imaging of the Disk Surrounding the Nearby Young Star TW Hya

    The TW Hya system is perhaps the closest analog to the early solar nebula. We have used the Very Large Array to image TW Hya at wavelengths of 7mm and 3.6 cm with resolutions 0.1 arcseconds (about 5 AU) and 1.0 arcseconds (about 50 AU), respectively. The 7mm emission is extended and appears dominated by a dusty disk of radius larger than 50 AU surrounding the star. The 3.6 cm emission is unresolved and likely arises from an ionized wind or gyrosynchrotron activity. The dust spectrum and spatially resolved 7mm images of the TW Hya disk are fitted by a simple model with temperature and surface density described by radial power laws, T(r)r0.5T(r)\propto r^{-0.5} and Σ(r)r1\Sigma(r) \propto r^{-1}. These properties are consistent with an irradiated gaseous accretion disk of mass 0.03 M\sim0.03~{\rm M_{\odot}} with an accretion rate 108 Myr1\sim10^{-8}~{\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}} and viscosity parameter α=0.01\alpha = 0.01. The estimates of mass and mass accretion rates are uncertain as the gas-to-dust ratio in the TW Hya disk may have evolved from the standard interstellar value.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ Letter

    VLA Observations of H I in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)

    We report the detection of 21-cm line emission from H I in the planetary nebula NGC 7293 (the Helix). The observations, made with the Very Large Array, show the presence of a ring of atomic hydrogen that is associated with the outer portion of the ionized nebula. This ring is most probably gas ejected in the AGB phase that has been subsequently photodissociated by radiation from the central star. The H I emission spreads over about 50 km/s in radial velocity. The mass in H I is approximately 0.07 solar masses, about three times larger than the mass in molecular hydrogen and comparable with the mass in ionized hydrogen.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure

    Application of Single-Station Sigma and Site-Response Characterization in a Probabilistic Seismic-Hazard Analysis for a New Nuclear Site

    Aleatory variability in ground-motion prediction, represented by the standard deviation (sigma) of a ground-motion prediction equation, exerts a very strong influence on the results of probabilistic seismic-hazard analysis (PSHA). This is especially so at the low annual exceedance frequencies considered for nuclear facilities; in these cases, even small reductions in sigma can have a marked effect on the hazard estimates. Proper separation and quantification of aleatory variability and epistemic uncertainty can lead to defensible reductions in sigma. One such approach is the single-station sigma concept, which removes that part of sigma corresponding to repeatable site-specific effects. However, the site-to-site component must then be constrained by site-specific measurements or else modeled as epistemic uncertainty and incorporated into the modeling of site effects. The practical application of the single-station sigma concept, including the characterization of the dynamic properties of the site and the incorporation of site-response effects into the hazard calculations, is illustrated for a PSHA conducted at a rock site under consideration for the potential construction of a nuclear power plant.Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineerin

    Collective pinning of imperfect vortex lattices by material line defects in extreme type-II superconductors

    The critical current density shown by a superconductor at the extreme type-II limit is predicted to follow an inverse square-root power law with external magnetic field if the vortex lattice is weakly pinned by material line defects. It acquires an additional inverse dependence with thickness along the line direction once pinning of the interstitial vortex lines by material point defects is included. Moderate quantitative agreement with the critical current density shown by second-generation wires of high-temperature superconductors in kG magnetic fields is achieved at liquid-nitrogen temperature.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.     The Quasar-frame Velocity Distribution of Narrow CIV Absorbers

    We report on a survey for narrow (FWHM < 600 km/s) CIV absorption lines in a sample of bright quasars at redshifts 1.8z<2.251.8 \le z < 2.25 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our main goal is to understand the relationship of narrow CIV absorbers to quasar outflows and, more generally, to quasar environments. We determine velocity zero-points using the broad MgII emission line, and then measure the absorbers' quasar-frame velocity distribution. We examine the distribution of lines arising in quasar outflows by subtracting model fits to the contributions from cosmologically intervening absorbers and absorption due to the quasar host galaxy or cluster environment. We find a substantial number (43±6\ge 43\pm6 per cent) of absorbers with REW >0.3> 0.3 \AA in the velocity range +750 km/s \la v \la +12000 km/s are intrinsic to the AGN outflow. This `outflow fraction' peaks near v=+2000v=+2000 km/s with a value of foutflow0.81±0.13f_{outflow} \simeq 0.81 \pm 0.13. At velocities below v+2000v \approx +2000 km/s the incidence of outflowing systems drops, possibly due to geometric effects or to the over-ionization of gas that is nearer the accretion disk. Furthermore, we find that outflow-absorbers are on average broader and stronger than cosmologically-intervening systems. Finally, we find that 14\sim 14 per cent of the quasars in our sample exhibit narrow, outflowing CIV absorption with REW >0.3> 0.3\AA, slightly larger than that for broad absorption line systems.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Optical and near-infrared observations of the microquasar V4641 Sagittarii during the 1999 September outburst

    We present photometric and spectroscopic optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations (Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, Chile (ESO ID 63.H-0493 and 64.H-0382)) taken during the outburst of the microquasar V4641 Sgr = SAX J1819.3-2525 (in'tzand et al., 2000) in September 1999. We observed an increase in the J-Ks colour between 5 and 8 days after the outburst, which we interpret as likely evidence for the presence of dust around the source. We also observed an extraordinarily strong, broad and variable H_alpha line, with a velocity width of 4560 km/s suggesting the presence of a high-velocity outflow component. We constrain the distance of the system between 3 and 8 kpc, locating it further away than previously derived from radio observations (Hjellming et al., 2000), but consistent with Orosz et al. (2001). We then discuss the nature of this system, showing that the companion star is either a B3-A2 main sequence star, or a B3-A2 sub-giant crossing the Hertzsprung gap. The system is therefore an Intermediate or High Mass X-ray Binary System (IMXB or HMXB). The distance derived by these optical/NIR observations implies that the jets observed by Hjellming et al. (2000) would then exhibit apparent velocities of ~ 10 c. We finally discuss the possibility of an interaction between the jets and surroundings of the source, and also of this source being a ``microblazar''.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
