Pretreatment with beta-blockers and the frequency of hypokalemia in patients with acute chest pain
Plasma potassium concentration was measured at admission in 1234 patients who presented with acute chest pain. One hundred and ninety five patients were on P blockers before admission. The potassium concentrations of patients admitted early (within four hours of onsetof symptoms) were compared with those admitted later (4-18 hours after onset of symptoms). There was a transient fall in plasma potassium concentrations in patients not pre-treated with , B blockers. This was not seen in patients who had been on P blockers before admission. Nonselective, B blockers were more effective than cardioselective agents in maintaining concentrationsof plasma potassium. These findings suggest a mechanism for the beneficial effects of ,B blockers on morbidity and mortality in acute myocardial infarction
Delayed Photoionization Feedback in a Super Star Cluster in SBS0335-052E
SBS0335-052 is a well studied Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy with one of the
lowest metallicities of any known galaxy. It also contains 6 previously
identified Super Star Clusters. We combine archival HST NICMOS images in the Pa
alpha line and the 1.6 micron continuum of the eastern component, SBS0335-052E,
with other space and ground based data to perform a multi-wavelength analysis
of the super star clusters. We concentrate on the southern most clusters,
designated S1 and S2, which appear to be the youngest clusters and are the
strongest emitters of Pa alpha, radio, and x-ray flux. Our analysis leads to a
possible model for S1 and perhaps S2 as a cluster of very young, massive stars
with strong stellar winds. The wind density can be high enough to absorb the
majority of ionizing photons within less than 1000 AU of the stars, creating
very compact HII regions that emit optically thick radiation at radio
wavelengths. These winds would then effectively quench the photoionizing flux
very close to the stars. This can delay the onset of negative feedback by
photoionization and photodissociation on star formation in the clusters. This
is significant since SBS0335-052E resembles the conditions that were probably
common for high redshift star formation in galaxies near the epoch of

Missing driver in the SunâEarth connection from energetic electron precipitation impacts mesospheric ozone
Energetic electron precipitation (EEP) from the Earthâs outer radiation belt continuously affects the chemical composition of the polar mesosphere. EEP can contribute to catalytic ozone loss in the mesosphere through ionization and enhanced production of odd hydrogen. However, the long-term mesospheric ozone variability caused by EEP has not been quantified or confirmed to date. Here we show, using observations from three different satellite instruments, that EEP events strongly affect ozone at 60â80âkm, leading to extremely large (up to 90%) short-term ozone depletion. This impact is comparable to that of large, but much less frequent, solar proton events. On solar cycle timescales, we find that EEP causes ozone variations of up to 34% at 70â80âkm. With such a magnitude, it is reasonable to suspect that EEP could be an important part of solar influence on the atmosphere and climate syste
A Search for the Damped Ly-alpha Absorber at z=1.86 toward QSO 1244+3443 with NICMOS
We have carried out a high-resolution imaging search for the galaxy
associated with the damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorber at z=1.859 toward the
z_{em}=2.48 quasar QSO 1244+3443, using the HST and the NICMOS. Images were
obtained in the broad filter F160W and the narrow filter F187N with camera 2 on
NICMOS with the goal of detecting the rest-frame optical continuum and the
H-alpha line emission from the DLA. After PSF subtraction, two weak features
are seen at projected separations of 0.16-0.24" from the quasar. Parts of these
features may be associated with the DLA absorber, although we cannot completely
rule out that they could be artifacts of the point spread function (PSF). If
associated with the DLA, the objects would be ~1-2 h_{70}^{-1} kpc in size with
integrated flux densities of 2.5 and 3.3 mu Jy in the F160W filter, implying
luminosities at lambda_{central}=5600 A in the DLA rest frame of 4.4-5.9 x
10^{9} h_{70}^{-2} L_{solar} at z=1.86, for q0=0.5. However, no significant
H-alpha line emission is seen from these objects, suggesting low star formation
rates (SFRs). Our 3 sigma upper limit on the SFR in the DLA is 1.3 h_{70}^{-2}
M_{solar}/yr for q0 = 0.5 (2.4 h_{70}^{-2} M_{solar} yr^{-1} for q0 = 0.1).
This together with our earlier result for LBQS 1210+1731 mark a significant
improvement over previous constraints on the star formation rates of DLAs. A
combination of low SFR and some dust extinction is likely to be responsible for
the lack of H-alpha emission. Alternatively, the objects, may be associated
with the quasar host galaxy. In any case, our observations suggest that the DLA
is not a large bright proto-disk, but a compact object or a low-surface
brightness galaxy. If the two features are PSF artifacts then the constraints

It explores the evidence for a relationship between attractiveness and career, and the authors propose a conceptual framework in which career image is comprised of three elements (interpersonal skills, aesthetic presentation and beauty). The paper examines a possible role for career professionals in relation to this and then critically examines this role and concludes with the proposition of a research agenda in this area
NICMOS Imaging of a Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber at z=1.89 toward LBQS 1210+1731 : Constraints on Size and Star Formation Rate
We report results of a high-resolution imaging search (in rest frame
H- and optical continuum) for the galaxy associated with the damped
Lyman- (DLA) absorber at toward the quasar
LBQS 1210+1731, using HST/NICMOS. After PSF subtraction, a feature is seen in
both the broad-band and narrow-band images, at a projected separation of
0.25\arcsec from the quasar. If associated with the DLA, the object would be
kpc in size with a flux of Jy in
the F160W filter, implying a luminosity at {\AA} in
the rest frame of L at ,
for . However, no significant H- emission is seen,
suggesting a low star formation rate (SFR) (3 upper limit of 4.0
M yr), or very high dust obscuration.
Alternatively, the object may be associated with the host galaxy of the quasar.
H-band images obtained with the NICMOS camera 2 coronagraph show a much fainter
structure kpc in size and containing four knots of
continuum emission, located 0.7\arcsec away from the quasar. We have probed
regions far closer to the quasar sight-line than in most previous studies of
high-redshift intervening DLAs. The two objects we report mark the closest
detected high-redshift DLA candidates yet to any quasar sight line. If the
features in our images are associated with the DLA, they suggest faint,
compact, somewhat clumpy objects rather than large, well-formed proto-galactic

Organic-Silica Interactions in Saline:Elucidating the Structural Influence of Calcium in Low-Salinity Enhanced Oil Recovery
Abstract Enhanced oil recovery using low-salinity solutions to sweep sandstone reservoirs is a widely-practiced strategy. The mechanisms governing this remain unresolved. Here, we elucidate the role of Ca2+ by combining chemical force microscopy (CFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We probe the influence of electrolyte composition and concentration on the adsorption of a representative molecule, positively-charged alkylammonium, at the aqueous electrolyte/silica interface, for four electrolytes: NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2. CFM reveals stronger adhesion on silica in CaCl2 compared with the other electrolytes, and shows a concentration-dependent adhesion not observed for the other electrolytes. Using MD simulations, we model the electrolytes at a negatively-charged amorphous silica substrate and predict the adsorption of methylammonium. Our simulations reveal four classes of surface adsorption site, where the prevalence of these sites depends only on CaCl2 concentration. The sites relevant to strong adhesion feature the Oâ silica site and Ca2+ in the presence of associated Clâ, which gain prevalence at higher CaCl2 concentration. Our simulations also predict the adhesion force profile to be distinct for CaCl2 compared with the other electrolytes. Together, these analyses explain our experimental data. Our findings indicate in general how silica wettability may be manipulated by electrolyte concentration
