Critical Evaluation of Time and Cost of Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Construction automated QA analysis

    Get PDF
Many governments agencies and private owners are demanding up-to-date information related to the current conditions of their facilities. Conventional QA is time-consuming and inefficient; thus, 3D terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology has been adopted due to the fast speed and high accuracy in acquiring data. Automated QA analysis can reduce the labour and time needed, reduce the costs, and improve the overall project efficiency. However, very few research efforts have been made to study the benefits of the automated QA analysis in a quantitative way. The process of the TLS-based geometric QA based in an automated data analysis process is described and the data is collected from a case study. It is analysed the performance between the approach with the verity software using a RCP file and the approach with the verity software using a LGS file. The results show for QA time that TLS based QA automated analysis approach with verity software using a LGS file is slightly more efficient ( is 1.464 m2/h) than using verity software using a RCP file is 1.398 m2/h). For QA cost, the results show that TLS based QA automated analysis using TLS approach with verity software using a RCP file and LGS file tended to have the same cost efficiency . With the increase of GFA values the is higher on the purchase than the rental of TLS equipment. Variations of the cost of QA automated analysis are affected by the fluctuation of the labour cost, equipment cost and software cost. New costs can easily input into the proposed model developed in this study for further analysi

From Molecular Gastronomy to Molecular Architecture: Reflections towards a new architectural praxis

    Get PDF
The relationship between architecture and research has been barely discussed and by making use of critical reading this paper proposes to investigate how other disciplines started to use Research and Development (R&D) as part of their creative processes. In particular it explores how gastronomy has unfolded new R&D paths through the revolutionary work of three leading chefs: Ferrian Adria, Rene Redzepi and Grant Achatz, illustrating the deep impact that the use of R&D had in this field and how it helped to transform it globally. By making parallels with these two disciplines, architecture and gastronomy, we hope to open up for new possibilities and alternative visions of architecture particularly those focusing at a new architectural praxis as well as at a computational and sustainable level

An evaluation of 2D SLAM techniques available in Robot Operating System

    Get PDF
n this work, a study of several laser-based 2D Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques available in Robot Operating System (ROS) is conducted. All the approaches have been evaluated and compared in 2D simulations and real world experiments. In order to draw conclusions on the performance of the tested techniques, the experimental results were collected under the same conditions and a generalized performance metric based on the k-nearest neighbours concept was applied. Moreover, the CPU load of each technique is examined. This work provides insight on the weaknesses and strengths of each solution. Such analysis is fundamental to decide which solution to adopt according to the properties of the intended final application

Architecture of a maturity model for information systems in higher education institutions: multiple case study for dimensions identification

    Get PDF
Higher education institutions (HEIs) are complex and dynamic organizations in terms of information management, forcing their information systems to respond to enormous challenges and threats. In order to evaluate the HEIs’ information systems, we propose the development of a maturity model capable of supporting the role of HEI’s managers, as well as accreditation agencies, in the assessment of the maturity of these systems, thus, promoting continuous improvement. In this paper, we present and discuss our proposal for an architecture of the maturity model being developed. This one is based on a two-dimensional architecture composed of vertical and horizontal dimensions. We selected a multi-case study approach, based on five Portuguese HEIs, and reviewed the literature to identify the dimensions. This case study was supported by interviews with experts from the selected HEI. The results of this research work were both encouraging and promising amongst the interviewed experts, revealing a high level of acceptance of the general model architecture, as well as positive expectations about its usefulness in the future. The development of our maturity model is carried out by following a formal methodology specially designed to support the construction of this type of model.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Matrix Assisted Formation of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles in a Siloxane/Poly(Oxyethylene) Nanohybrid

Matrix-assisted formation of ferrihydrite, an iron oxide hydroxide analogue of the protein ferritin-core, in a sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid is reported. The hybrid network (named di-ureasil) is composed of poly(oxyethylene) chains of different average polymer molecular weights grafted to siloxane domains by means of urea cross-linkages and accommodates ferrihydrite nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements, Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveal that the controlled modification of the polymer molecular weight allows the fine-tuning of the ability of the hybrid matrix to assist and promote iron coordination at the organic-inorganic interface and subsequent nucleation and growth of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles whose core size (2-4 nm) is tuned by the amount of iron incorporated. The polymer chain length, its arrangement and crystallinity, are key factors on the anchoring and formation of the ferrihydrite particles.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. To be published in J. Mater. Che
