Thermomechanical deformation behavior of a dynamic strain aging alloy, Hastelloy X

    Get PDF
An experimental study was performed to identify the effects of dynamic strain aging (solute drag) and metallurgical instabilities under thermomechanical loading conditions. The study involved a series of closely controlled thermomechanical deformation tests on the solid-solution-strenghened nickel-base superalloy, Hastelloy X. This alloy exhibits a strong isothermal strain aging peak at approximately 600 C, promoted by the effects of solute drag and precipitation hardening. Macroscopic thermomechanical hardening trends are correlated with microstructural characteristics through the use of transmission electron microscopy. These observations are compared and contrasted with isothermal conditions. Thermomechanical behavior unique to the isothermal database is identified and discussed. The microstructural characteristics were shown to be dominated by effects associated with the highest temperature of the thermomechanical cycle. Results indicate that the deformation behavior of Hastelloy X is thermomechanically path dependent. In addition, guidance is given pertaining to deformation modeling in the context of macroscopic unified theory. An internal state variable is formulated to qualitatively reflect the isotropic hardening trends identified in the TMD experiments

Total and Regional BMD Comparison of Collegiate Male and Female Athletes Abstract INTRODUCTION: Physiological and biomechanical demands of different sports have varying effects on the athletes that play them. For example, previous studies have shown that runners and swimmers can have lower bone mineral density (BMD) than athletes in ball sports or inactive controls. PURPOSE: To quantify and compare BMD in athletes to better understand how certain sport specific exercise promotes bone acquisition. METHODS: Fifty one (N=51) NCAA Division I athletes (18-25 yrs) had a whole body DXA scan performed to quantify total body BMD and segmental BMD. Fifteen (n=15) male and 36 female (n=36) athletes who participate in soccer, middle distance running events, and swimming were scanned. RESULTS: Women’s swimming (0.912 g/cm2) was found to have higher BMD in the arms than women’s endurance running (.828 g/cm2). Women’s soccer (1.427 g/cm2 and 1.356 g/cm2) had a higher BMD in the legs and pelvis than the women swimmers (1.293 g/cm2 and 1.228 g/cm2) and higher pelvis BMD than the women’s endurance runners (1.221 g/cm2). CONCLUSION: The results from the current study demonstrated that running may have a slight benefit in women athlete’s BMD and that swimmers may have a higher arm BMD than female runners. Of note is that the sport involving multi-planar, multi-speed directional forces (women’s soccer) demonstrated the densest bones in the lower body in comparison to the other sports

    Safety of Aggressive Lipid Management

Data from recent clinical trials of high- versus moderate-dose statin therapy support the recommendation to achieve a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) <100 mg/dl in high-risk patients and reveal that many patients will require a high-dose statin to achieve this goal. Overall, low rates of serious musculoskeletal (<0.6%) and hepatic (<1.3%) toxicity have been observed with high-dose statin therapy. In the long-term trials, atorvastatin 80 mg had higher rates of persistent transaminase elevations but rates of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis similar to lower doses of statins. The rate of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis for simvastatin 80 mg, although still low, was about 4Ă— higher than for atorvastatin 80 mg and lower doses of statin. A similar margin of safety would be expected in properly selected patients with characteristics similar to those who participated in the clinical trials. High-dose statin therapy or combination therapy will be required for the large majority of very high-risk patients to achieve the optional LDL goal of <70 mg/dl. While the combination of ezetimibe, bile-acid sequestering agents, niacin, and fenofibrate with moderate dose statins appears to be reasonably safe, the long-term safety of combination with high-dose statins remains to be established. In order to optimize patient outcomes, clinicians should be aware of specific patient characteristics, such as advancing age, gender, body mass index, or glomerular filtration rate, which predict muscle and hepatic statin toxicity

Shopping, Gambling or Shambling? Penny Auctions

On penny auction websites, consumers participate in a game where the winner receives the opportunity to purchase a product for pennies on the dollar and discounts of over 90% are often advertised and recorded. Losers, on the other hand, may easily spend hundreds of dollars and walk away with nothing. For penny auction websites, profit margins over 300% on a single auction are not uncommon. Critics call penny auctions gambling. Proponents call penny auctions entertainment shopping. Either way, this emerging form of ecommerce represents a fascinating area for academic research

Formal Concept Lattice Representations and Algorithms for Hypergraphs

There is increasing focus on analyzing data represented as hypergraphs, which are better able to express complex relationships amongst entities than are graphs. Much of the critical information about hypergraph structure is available only in the intersection relationships of the hyperedges, and so forming the "intersection complex" of a hypergraph is quite valuable. This identifies a valuable isomorphism between the intersection complex and the "concept lattice" formed from taking the hypergraph's incidence matrix as a "formal context": hypergraphs also generalize graphs in that their incidence matrices are arbitrary Boolean matrices. This isomorphism allows connecting discrete algorithms for lattices and hypergraphs, in particular s-walks or s-paths on hypergraphs can be mapped to order theoretical operations on the concept lattice. We give new algorithms for formal concept lattices and hypergraph s-walks on concept lattices. We apply this to a large real-world dataset and find deep lattices implying high interconnectivity and complex geometry of hyperedges
