An FPT 2-Approximation for Tree-Cut Decomposition
The tree-cut width of a graph is a graph parameter defined by Wollan [J.
Comb. Theory, Ser. B, 110:47-66, 2015] with the help of tree-cut
decompositions. In certain cases, tree-cut width appears to be more adequate
than treewidth as an invariant that, when bounded, can accelerate the
resolution of intractable problems. While designing algorithms for problems
with bounded tree-cut width, it is important to have a parametrically tractable
way to compute the exact value of this parameter or, at least, some constant
approximation of it. In this paper we give a parameterized 2-approximation
algorithm for the computation of tree-cut width; for an input -vertex graph
and an integer , our algorithm either confirms that the tree-cut width
of is more than or returns a tree-cut decomposition of certifying
that its tree-cut width is at most , in time .
Prior to this work, no constructive parameterized algorithms, even approximated
ones, existed for computing the tree-cut width of a graph. As a consequence of
the Graph Minors series by Robertson and Seymour, only the existence of a
decision algorithm was known.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Optimal client recommendation for market makers in illiquid financial products
The process of liquidity provision in financial markets can result in
prolonged exposure to illiquid instruments for market makers. In this case,
where a proprietary position is not desired, pro-actively targeting the right
client who is likely to be interested can be an effective means to offset this
position, rather than relying on commensurate interest arising through natural
demand. In this paper, we consider the inference of a client profile for the
purpose of corporate bond recommendation, based on typical recorded information
available to the market maker. Given a historical record of corporate bond
transactions and bond meta-data, we use a topic-modelling analogy to develop a
probabilistic technique for compiling a curated list of client recommendations
for a particular bond that needs to be traded, ranked by probability of
interest. We show that a model based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation offers
promising performance to deliver relevant recommendations for sales traders.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Towards Spatial Word Embeddings
Leveraging textual and spatial data provided in spatio-textual objects (eg., tweets), has become increasingly important in real-world applications, favoured by the increasing rate of their availability these last decades (eg., through smartphones). In this paper, we propose a spatial retrofitting method of word embeddings that could reveal the localised similarity of word pairs as well as the diversity of their localised meanings. Experiments based on the semantic location prediction task show that our method achieves significant improvement over strong baselines
Assessment of the Variability in Influenza A(H1N1) Vaccine Effectiveness Estimates Dependent on Outcome and Methodological Approach
Estimation of Influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) varies with study design, clinical outcome 10 considered and statistical methodology used. By estimating VE using differing outcomes and 11 statistical methods on the same cohort of individuals the variability in the estimates produced can 12 be better understood. The Pandemic Influenza Primary Care Reporting (PIPeR) cohort of approximately 193,000 individuals 14 was used to estimate pandemic VE in Scotland during season 2009-10. VE results for three 15 outcomes; influenza related consultations, virological confirmed influenza and death were 16 considered. Use of individualised records allowed all models to be adjusted for age, sex, 17 deprivation, risk status relating to chronic illnesses, seasonal vaccination status and a marker of the 18 individual’s propensity to consult. For the consultation and death outcomes, VE was calculated by 19 comparing consultation rates in the unvaccinated and vaccinated groups, adjusted for the listed 20 factors, using both Cox and Poisson regression models. For the consultation outcome, the 21 unvaccinated group was split into individuals before vaccination and those never vaccinated to allow 22 for potential differences in the health seeking behaviour of these groups. For the virology outcome 23 estimates were calculated using a generalised additive logistic regression model. All models were 24 adjusted for time. Vaccine effect was demonstrated for the influenza-like illness consultation outcome using the Cox 26 model (VE=49% 95% CI (19%, 67%)) with lower estimates from the model splitting the before and 27 never vaccinated groups (VE=34.2% with 95% CI (-0.5%, 58.9%)). Vaccine effect was also illustrated 28 for overall mortality (VE=40% (95% CI 18%, 56%)) and a virological confirmed subset of symptomatic 29 individuals (VE=60% (95% CI -38%, 89%))
Comparative evaluation of diode laser versus argon laser photocoagulation in patients with central serous retinopathy: A pilot, randomized controlled trial [ISRCTN84128484]
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of diode laser photocoagulation in patients with central serous retinopathy (CSR) and to compare it with the effects of argon green laser. METHODS: Thirty patients with type 1 unilateral CSR were enrolled and evaluated on parameters like best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, amsler grid for recording scotoma and metamorphopsia, contrast sensitivity using Cambridge low contrast gratings and fluorescein angiography to determine the site of leakage. Patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups according to the statistical random table using sequence generation. In Group 1 (n = 15), diode laser (810 nm) photocoagulation was performed at the site of leakage while in Group 2 (n = 15), eyes were treated with argon green laser (514 nm) using the same laser parameters. Patients were followed up at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after laser. RESULTS: The mean BCVA in group 1 improved from a pre-laser decimal value of 0.29 ± 0.14 to 0.84 ± 0.23 at 4 weeks and 1.06 ± 0.09 at 12 weeks following laser. In group 2, the same improved from 0.32 ± 0.16 to 0.67 ± 0.18 at 4 weeks and 0.98 ± 0.14 at 12 weeks following laser. The improvement in BCVA was significantly better in group 1 (p < 0.0001) at 4 weeks. At 4 weeks following laser, all the patients in group1 were free of scotoma while 6 patients in group 2 had residual scotoma (p < 0.05). The mean contrast sensitivity in group 1 improved from pre-laser value of 98.4 ± 24.77 to 231.33 ± 48.97 at 4 weeks and 306.00 ± 46.57 at 12 weeks following laser. In group 2, the same improved from 130.66 ± 31.95 to 190.66 ± 23.44 at 4 weeks and 215.33 ± 23.25 at 12 weeks. On comparative evaluation, a significantly better (p < 0.001) improvement was noted in group 1. CONCLUSION: Diode laser may be a better alternative to argon green laser whenever laser treatment becomes indicated in patients with central serous retinopathy in terms of faster visual rehabilitation and better contrast sensitivity. In addition, diode laser also has the well-recognized ergonomic and economic advantages
The pharmaceutical use of permethrin: Sources and behavior during municipal sewage treatment
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Permethrin entered use in the 1970s as an insecticide in a wide range of applications, including agriculture, horticultural, and forestry, and has since been restricted. In the 21st century, the presence of permethrin in the aquatic environment has been attributed to its use as a human and veterinary pharmaceutical, in particular as a pedeculicide, in addition to other uses, such as a moth-proofing agent. However, as a consequence of its toxicity to fish, sources of permethrin and its fate and behavior during wastewater treatment are topics of concern. This study has established that high overall removal of permethrin (approximately 90%) was achieved during wastewater treatment and that this was strongly dependent on the extent of biological degradation in secondary treatment, with more limited subsequent removal in tertiary treatment processes. Sources of permethrin in the catchment matched well with measured values in crude sewage and indicated that domestic use accounted for more than half of the load to the treatment works. However, removal may not be consistent enough to achieve the environmental quality standards now being derived in many countries even where tertiary treatment processes are applied.United Utilities PL

Inheritance of Telomere Length in a Bird
Telomere dynamics are intensively studied in human ageing research and epidemiology, with many correlations reported between telomere length and age-related diseases, cancer and death. While telomere length is influenced by environmental factors there is also good evidence for a strong heritable component. In human, the mode of telomere length inheritance appears to be paternal and telomere length differs between sexes, with females having longer telomeres than males. Genetic factors, e.g. sex chromosomal inactivation, and non-genetic factors, e.g. antioxidant properties of oestrogen, have been suggested as possible explanations for these sex-specific telomere inheritance and telomere length differences. To test the influence of sex chromosomes on telomere length, we investigated inheritance and sex-specificity of telomere length in a bird species, the kakapo (Strigops habroptilus), in which females are the heterogametic sex (ZW) and males are the homogametic (ZZ) sex. We found that, contrary to findings in humans, telomere length was maternally inherited and also longer in males. These results argue against an effect of sex hormones on telomere length and suggest that factors associated with heterogamy may play a role in telomere inheritance and sex-specific differences in telomere length
Matched sizes of activating and inhibitory receptor/ligand pairs are required for optimal signal integration by human Natural Killer cells
It has been suggested that receptor-ligand complexes segregate or co-localise within immune synapses according to their size, and this is important for receptor signaling. Here, we set out to test the importance of receptor-ligand complex dimensions for immune surveillance of target cells by human Natural Killer (NK) cells. NK cell activation is regulated by integrating signals from activating receptors, such as NKG2D, and inhibitory receptors, such as KIR2DL1. Elongating the NKG2D ligand MICA reduced its ability to trigger NK cell activation. Conversely, elongation of KIR2DL1 ligand HLA-C reduced its ability to inhibit NK cells. Whereas normal-sized HLA-C was most effective at inhibiting activation by normal-length MICA, only elongated HLA-C could inhibit activation by elongated MICA. Moreover, HLA-C and MICA that were matched in size co-localised, whereas HLA-C and MICA that were different in size were segregated. These results demonstrate that receptor-ligand dimensions are important in NK cell recognition, and suggest that optimal integration of activating and inhibitory receptor signals requires the receptor-ligand complexes to have similar dimensions
Accurate and Fast Retrieval for Complex Non-metric Data via Neighborhood Graphs
We demonstrate that a graph-based search algorithm-relying on the
construction of an approximate neighborhood graph-can directly work with
challenging non-metric and/or non-symmetric distances without resorting to
metric-space mapping and/or distance symmetrization, which, in turn, lead to
substantial performance degradation. Although the straightforward metrization
and symmetrization is usually ineffective, we find that constructing an index
using a modified, e.g., symmetrized, distance can improve performance. This
observation paves a way to a new line of research of designing index-specific
graph-construction distance functions
