For richer, for poorer: marriage and casualized sex in East African artisanal mining settlements
Migrants to Tanzania's artisanal gold mining sites seek mineral wealth, which is accompanied by high risks of occupational hazards, economic failure, AIDS and social censure from their home communities. Male miners in these settlements compete to attract newly arrived young women who are perceived to be diverting male material support from older women and children's economic survival. This article explores the dynamics of monogamy, polygamy and promiscuity in the context of rapid occupational change. It shows how a wide spectrum of productive and welfare outcomes is generated through sexual experimentation, which calls into question conventional concepts of prostitution, marriage and gender power relations
Demystifying an unidentified EGRET source by VHE gamma-ray observations
In a novel approach in observational high-energy gamma-ray astronomy,
observations carried out by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provide
necessary templates to pinpoint the nature of intriguing, yet unidentified
EGRET gamma-ray sources. Using GeV-photons detected by CGRO EGRET and taking
advantage of high spatial resolution images from H.E.S.S. observations, we were
able to shed new light on the EGRET observed gamma-ray emission in the
Kookaburra complex, whose previous coverage in the literature is somewhat
contradictory. 3EGJ1420-6038 very likely accounts for two GeV gamma-ray sources
(E>1 GeV), both in positional coincidence with the recently reported pulsar
wind nebulae (PWN) by HESS in the Kookaburra/Rabbit complex. PWN associations
at VHE energies, supported by accumulating evidence from observations in the
radio and X-ray band, are indicative for the PSR/plerionic origin of spatially
coincident, but still unidentified Galactic gamma-ray sources from EGRET. This
not only supports the already suggested connection between variable, but
unidentified low-latitude gamma-ray sources with pulsar wind nebulae
(3EGJ1420-6038 has been suggested as PWN candidate previoulsy), it also
documents the ability of resolving apparently confused EGRET sources by
connecting the GeV emission as measured from a large-aperture space-based
gamma-ray instrument with narrow field-of-view but superior spatial resolution
observations by ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, a very promising
identification technique for achieving convincing individual source

An Alternative Method to Deduce Bubble Dynamics in Single Bubble Sonoluminescence Experiments
In this paper we present an experimental approach that allows to deduce the
important dynamical parameters of single sonoluminescing bubbles (pressure
amplitude, ambient radius, radius-time curve) The technique is based on a few
previously confirmed theoretical assumptions and requires the knowledge of
quantities such as the amplitude of the electric excitation and the phase of
the flashes in the acoustic period. These quantities are easily measurable by a
digital oscilloscope, avoiding the cost of expensive lasers, or ultrafast
cameras of previous methods. We show the technique on a particular example and
compare the results with conventional Mie scattering. We find that within the
experimental uncertainties these two techniques provide similar results.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Introduction to the functional RG and applications to gauge theories
These lectures contain an introduction to modern renormalization group (RG)
methods as well as functional RG approaches to gauge theories. In the first
lecture, the functional renormalization group is introduced with a focus on the
flow equation for the effective average action. The second lecture is devoted
to a discussion of flow equations and symmetries in general, and flow equations
and gauge symmetries in particular. The third lecture deals with the flow
equation in the background formalism which is particularly convenient for
analytical computations of truncated flows. The fourth lecture concentrates on
the transition from microscopic to macroscopic degrees of freedom; even though
this is discussed here in the language and the context of QCD, the developed

"Just Going Through the Motions.…": A Qualitative Exploration of Athlete Perceptions of Social Loafing in Training and Competition Contexts - Implications for Team Sport Coaches
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty team sport athletes representing a range of different sports with the aim of investigating their views relating to social loafing in training and competition. General themes investigated and subsequent content analysis highlighted
factors that promote or reduce the extent of social loafing. Determinants of self-loafing were grouped according to three distinct categories: Group processes; Task characteristics and Individual perceptions. Social loafing among others was perceived to be prevalent in both the training and competition scenarios with more examples of social loafing provided in the training situation. The signs of social loafing were grouped according to the
following themes: Cognitive & Emotional, Behavioural, Communication and Player Intuition. Consequences of social loafing were found to be detrimental to the effort and performance of both the individual and the team. Athletes were also able to differentiate between perceived social loafing and the perceived use of ‘strategic rest’ in team sports. Implications for the coaching process are far reaching with the need to develop an effective team culture and to provide training sessions that are interesting, engaging and relevant
Pulsar-wind nebulae and magnetar outflows: observations at radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths
We review observations of several classes of neutron-star-powered outflows:
pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) inside shell supernova remnants (SNRs), PWNe
interacting directly with interstellar medium (ISM), and magnetar-powered
outflows. We describe radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of PWNe,
focusing first on integrated spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) and global
spectral properties. High-resolution X-ray imaging of PWNe shows a bewildering
array of morphologies, with jets, trails, and other structures. Several of the
23 so far identified magnetars show evidence for continuous or sporadic
emission of material, sometimes associated with giant flares, and a few
possible "magnetar-wind nebulae" have been recently identified.Comment: 61 pages, 44 figures (reduced in quality for size reasons). Published

As the highest-energy photons, gamma rays have an inherent interest to
astrophysicists and particle physicists studying high-energy, nonthermal
processes. Gamma-ray telescopes complement those at other wavelengths,
especially radio, optical, and X-ray, providing the broad, mutiwavelength
coverage that has become such a powerful aspect of modern astrophysics.
Multiwavelength techniques of various types have been developed to help
identify and explore unidentified gamma-ray sources. This overview summarizes

Fluctuations, dissipation and the dynamical Casimir effect
Vacuum fluctuations provide a fundamental source of dissipation for systems
coupled to quantum fields by radiation pressure. In the dynamical Casimir
effect, accelerating neutral bodies in free space give rise to the emission of
real photons while experiencing a damping force which plays the role of a
radiation reaction force. Analog models where non-stationary conditions for the
electromagnetic field simulate the presence of moving plates are currently
under experimental investigation. A dissipative force might also appear in the
case of uniform relative motion between two bodies, thus leading to a new kind
of friction mechanism without mechanical contact. In this paper, we review
recent advances on the dynamical Casimir and non-contact friction effects,

Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two
