Light depolarization effects during the Fréedericksz transition in nematic liquid crystals
This work is aimed to the photopolarimetric characterization of the disorder evolution occurring in homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal films during the electrically induced Freedericksz transition. The molecular director dynamics and the transversal reorientation modes are investigated by the analysis of the depolarization of the light beam emerging from the sample. Our measurements reveal unexpected depolarization effects at the transition, which we interpret in terms of director field unhomogeneity and defects creation. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America
A computational platform for the virtual unfolding of Herculaneum Papyri
Ancient Herculaneum papyrus scrolls, hopelessly charred in the 79 A.D. Vesuvius eruption, contain valuable writings of the Greek philosophers of the day, including works of the Epicurean Philodemus. X-ray phase contrast tomography has recently begun unlocking their secrets. However, only small portions of the text hidden inside the scroll have been recover. One of the challenging tasks in Herculaneum papyri investigation is their virtual unfolding because of their highly complicated structure and three-dimensional arrangement. Although this procedure is feasible, problems in segmentation and flattening hinder the unrolling of a large portion of papyrus. We propose a computational platform for the virtual unfolding procedure, and we show the results of its application on two Herculaneum papyrus fragments. This work paves the way to a comprehensive survey and to further interpretation of larger portions of text hidden inside the carbonized Herculaneum papyri
Polarization-dependent optomechanics mediated by chiral microresonators.
Chirality is one of the most prominent and intriguing aspects of nature, from spiral galaxies down to aminoacids. Despite the wide range of living and non-living, natural and artificial chiral systems at different scales, the origin of chirality-induced phenomena is often puzzling. Here we assess the onset of chiral optomechanics, exploiting the control of the interaction between chiral entities. We perform an experimental and theoretical investigation of the simultaneous optical trapping and rotation of spherulite-like chiral microparticles. Due to their shell structure (Bragg dielectric resonator), the microparticles function as omnidirectional chiral mirrors yielding highly polarization-dependent optomechanical effects. The coupling of linear and angular momentum, mediated by the optical polarization and the microparticles chiral reflectance, allows for fine tuning of chirality-induced optical forces and torques. This offers tools for optomechanics, optical sorting and sensing and optofluidics

Study of Enzymatic Mechanisms Using Density Functional Theory and QM/MM Methods
-Tyrosine Ammonia-Lyase (TAL)
-Human Pancreatic Amylase (HPA)
-Organo-Phosphate Degrading enzyme (OPDA)UniversitĂ della Calabri

Astroparticle physics as a telescope for solar interior, galactic and extragalactic structures
Scuola di Dottorato Scienza e Tecnica "Bernardino Telesio", Fisica dei Sistemi Complessi, Ciclo XXVI, a.a. 2013Astroparticle physics provide a fundamental tool to investigate the astrophysical structures
at different scales. In this thesis the results are presented of three years of research focused
on time variations on solar neutrino flux, galactic cosmic rays and fine-structure constant as
observed from quasar spectra. These topics are nowadays crucial to investigate structures
which otherwise result difficult to probe. In particular time variations in solar neutrinos
can give a real time description of the dynamics which take place in the inner regions of the
Sun, while the study of galactic cosmic rays through the observation of muons produced by
the interaction of the formers with the atmosphere, may give us precious informations on
the interaction between TeV particles and heliospheric magnetic fields. Finally the recent
observations of variations in the fine-structure constant value from the analysis of quasar
absorption spectra, offer new possibilities to probe physical laws at cosmological scales. The
thesis is structured as follows. In Chapter One are discussed quasi-biennial oscillations observed
on solar neutrino flux and a phenomenological model is proposed to interpret the
observed time variations. In the scenario described by the model, the interaction between
solar neutrinos and solar matter mediated by magnetogravity modes, is modulated by a
background magnetic field varying in time on quasi-biennial time scales. In Chapter Two
the 11-yr component recently observed in cosmic muon data from Gran Sasso experiments
of MACRO, LVD and Borexino has been reconstructed through the EMD analysis technique.
In Chapter Three the data of fine-structure constant variations as observed in the
quasar absorption spectra have been analyzed to search for temporal coherent structures.
The thesis is completed by the description in appendix of a new algorithm based on Monte
Carlo methods to assign a confidence interval to the IMFs extracted with the EMD analysis,
and the application of this method to study the proton and neutrino distributions
used in the OPERA experiment for the neutrino velocity measurement. Another appendix
is dedicated to detailed description of the effects induced on the magnetogravity spectrum
by a background magnetic field with a low-pass bandwidth, thus generalizing the theory
of magneto-gravity modes in presence of a time-dependent background magnetic field.
Ferdinando IV in
biotico.UniversitĂ della Calabri
