    Reducibility for a class of weakly dispersive linear operators arising from the Degasperis Procesi equation

    We prove reducibility of a class of quasi-periodically forced linear equations of the form ∂tu−∂x∘(1+a(ωt,x))u+Q(ωt)u=0,x∈T:=R/2πZ, \partial_tu-\partial_x\circ (1+a(\omega t, x))u+\mathcal{Q}(\omega t)u=0,\quad x\in\mathbb{T}:=\mathbb{R}/2\pi\mathbb{Z}, where u=u(t,x)u=u(t,x), aa is a small, C∞C^{\infty} function, Q\mathcal{Q} is a pseudo differential operator of order −1-1, provided that ω∈RÎœ\omega\in\mathbb{R}^{\nu} satisfies appropriate non-resonance conditions. Such PDEs arise by linearizing the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation at a small amplitude quasi-periodic function. Our work provides a first fundamental step in developing a KAM theory for perturbations of the DP equation on the circle. Following \cite{Airy}, our approach is based on two main points: first a reduction in orders based on an Egorov type theorem then a KAM diagonalization scheme. In both steps the key difficulites arise from the asymptotically linear dispersion law. In view of the application to the nonlinear context we prove sharp \emph{tame} bounds on the diagonalizing change of variables. We remark that the strategy and the techniques proposed are applicable for proving reducibility of more general classes of linear pseudo differential first order operators

    Solid state physicochemical properties and applications of organic and metallo-organic fullerene derivatives

    We review the fundamental properties and main applications of organic derivatives and complexes of fullerenes in the solid-state form. We address in particular the structural properties, in terms of crystal structure, polymorphism, orientational transitions and morphology, and the electronic structure and derived properties, such as chemical activity, electrical conduction mechanisms, optical properties, heat conduction and magnetism. The last two sections of the review focus on the solid-state optoelectronic and electrochemical applications of fullerene derivatives, which range from photovoltaic cells to field-effect transistors and photodetectors on one hand, to electron-beam resists, electrolytes and energy storage on the other.Peer ReviewedPreprin

    Hierarchical structure-and-motion recovery from uncalibrated images

    This paper addresses the structure-and-motion problem, that requires to find camera motion and 3D struc- ture from point matches. A new pipeline, dubbed Samantha, is presented, that departs from the prevailing sequential paradigm and embraces instead a hierarchical approach. This method has several advantages, like a provably lower computational complexity, which is necessary to achieve true scalability, and better error containment, leading to more stability and less drift. Moreover, a practical autocalibration procedure allows to process images without ancillary information. Experiments with real data assess the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the method.Comment: Accepted for publication in CVI

    Young in-Old out: a new evaluation based on Generalized Propensity Score

    This paper aims at evaluating the effect of the amount of older workers exits (aged 50 or more) on the entries of youngsters at a local labour market level, during years 1985 - 2002. If we can observe some effect of the exits on the entries, it will shed light on the substitution between older workers and youngsters. Moreover, since in our model the causal agent cannot be specified a – priori, we don’t know what causes what. Hence, we are actually looking for a correlation between these two quantities. Systematic differences in background characteristics, between local markets with different levels of the older workers exits, can bias the effect estimation on the entries of youngsters. In order to adjust for this, we apply propensity score methods as extended and generalized in a setting with a continuous treatment by Hirano and Imbens (2004).     Thermal emission and magnetic beaming in the radio and X-ray mode-switching PSR B0943+10

    PSR B0943+10 is a mode-switching radio pulsar characterized by two emission modes with different radio and X-ray properties. Previous studies, based on simple combinations of blackbody and power law models, showed that its X-ray flux can be decomposed in a pulsed thermal plus an unpulsed non-thermal components. However, if PSR B0943+10 is a nearly aligned rotator seen pole-on, as suggested by the radio data, it is difficult to reproduce the high observed pulsed fraction unless magnetic beaming is included. In this work we reanalyze all the available X-ray observations of PSR B0943+10 with simultaneous radio coverage, modeling its thermal emission with polar caps covered by a magnetized hydrogen atmosphere or with a condensed iron surface. The condensed surface model provides good fits to the spectra of both pulsar modes, but, similarly to the blackbody, it can not reproduce the observed pulse profiles, unless an additional power law with an ad hoc modulation is added. Instead, the pulse profiles and phase-resolved spectra are well described using the hydrogen atmosphere model to describe the polar cap emission, plus an unpulsed power law. For the X-ray brighter state (Q-mode) we obtain a best fit with a temperature kT~0.09 keV, an emitting radius R~260 m, a magnetic field consistent with the value of the dipole field of 4x10^12 G inferred from the timing parameters, and a small angle between the magnetic and spin axis, Ο\xi=5. The corresponding parameters for the X-ray fainter state (B-mode) are kT~0.08 keV and R~170 m.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Anti epidermal growth factor receptor therapy in small bowel adenocarcinoma

    Rationale:Small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA) is an uncommon gastrointestinal cancer, thus limited data about treatment for advanced disease are available. The lack of specific guidelines has justified the use of therapeutic protocols usually applied in advanced colorectal cancer. Few and preliminary data have suggested possible clinical benefit from the use of target therapy such as bevacizumab and cetuximab.Patient concerns:We present the case of a young woman who was admitted to the emergency department for acute abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting related to a jejunal stenosis.Diagnoses:An enteroscopy with jejunal biopsy showed poorly differentiated cancerous cells suggestive for primary intestinal cancer. There were no signs of metastatic disease at radiological evaluation. A jejunal resection was subsequently carried out and the diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the jejunum was confirmed.Interventions:The computed tomography scan performed 1 month after surgery showed metastatic disease. Therefore, the patient received combined protocols of chemotherapy and either bevacizumab or the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) panitumumab.Outcomes:A partial response (PR) was achieved with Folfox plus panitumumab and a maintenance therapy with panitumumab is being conducted with a mild toxicity and a progression free survival of 19 months since the beginning of panitumumab.Lessons:This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report in the literature of a patient with SBA who has benefitted from panitumumab with an overall survival of 83 months
