New Minimal Distortion Shift Gauge
Based on the recent understanding of the role of the densitized lapse
function in Einstein's equations and of the proper way to pose the thin
sandwich problem, a slight readjustment of the minimal distortion shift gauge
in the 3+1 approach to the dynamics of general relativity allows this shift
vector to serve as the vector potential for the longitudinal part of the
extrinsic curvature tensor in the new approach to the initial value problem,
thus extending the initial value decomposition of gravitational variables to
play a role in the evolution as well. The new shift vector globally minimizes
the changes in the conformal 3-metric with respect to the spacetime measure
rather than the spatial measure on the time coordinate hypersurfaces, as the

The Evolving Landscape of Internet Control
Over the past two years, we have undertaken several studies at the Berkman Center designed to better understand the control of the Internet in less open societies. During the years we've been engaged in this research, we have seen many incidents that have highlighted the continuing role of the Internet as a battleground for political control, including partial or total Internet shutdowns in China, Iran, Egypt, Libya, and Syria; many hundreds of documented DDoS, hacking, and other cyber attacks against political sites; continued growth in the number of countries that filter the Internet; and dozens of well documented cases of on- and offline persecution of online dissidents. The energy dedicated to these battles for control of the Internet on both the government and dissident sides indicated, if nothing else, that both sides think that the Internet is a critical space for political action. In this paper, we offer an overview of our research in the context of these changes in the methods used to control online speech, and some thoughts on the challenges to online speech in the immediate future

Pigment Intensity in Dogs is Associated with a Copy Number Variant Upstream of KITLG.
Dogs exhibit a wide variety of coat color types, and many genes have been identified that control pigment production, appearance, and distribution. Some breeds, such as the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (NSDTR), exhibit variation in pheomelanin pigment intensity that is not explained by known genetic variants. A genome-wide association study comparing light red to dark red in the NSDTR identified a significantly associated region on canine chromosome 15 (CFA 15:23 Mb-38 Mb). Coverage analysis of whole genome sequence data from eight dogs identified a 6 kb copy number variant (CNV) 152 kb upstream of KITLG. Genotyping with digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) confirmed a significant association between an increased copy number with the dark-red coat color in NSDTR (p = 6.1 Ă— 10-7). The copy number of the CNV was also significantly associated with coat color variation in both eumelanin and pheomelanin-based Poodles (p = 1.5 Ă— 10-8, 4.0 Ă— 10-9) and across other breeds. Moreover, the copy number correlated with pigment intensity along the hair shaft in both pheomelanin and eumelanin coats. KITLG plays an important role in melanogenesis, and variants upstream of KITLG have been associated with coat color variation in mice as well as hair color in humans consistent with its role in the domestic dog
Failures in power-combining arrays
We derive a simple formula for the change in output when a device fails in a power-combining structure with identical matched devices. The loss is written in terms of the scattering coefficient of the failed device and reflection coefficient of an input port in the combining network. We apply this formula to several power combiners, including arrays in free space and enclosed waveguide structures. Our simulations indicate the output power degrades gracefully as devices fail, which is in agreement with previously published results
Constraint Damping in First-Order Evolution Systems for Numerical Relativity
A new constraint suppressing formulation of the Einstein evolution equations
is presented, generalizing the five-parameter first-order system due to Kidder,
Scheel and Teukolsky (KST). The auxiliary fields, introduced to make the KST
system first-order, are given modified evolution equations designed to drive
constraint violations toward zero. The algebraic structure of the new system is
investigated, showing that the modifications preserve the hyperbolicity of the
fundamental and constraint evolution equations. The evolution of the
constraints for pertubations of flat spacetime is completely analyzed, and all
finite-wavelength constraint modes are shown to decay exponentially when
certain adjustable parameters satisfy appropriate inequalities. Numerical
simulations of a single Schwarzschild black hole are presented, demonstrating
the effectiveness of the new constraint-damping modifications.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
DNA methylation associated with postpartum depressive symptoms overlaps findings from a genome-wide association meta-analysis of depression
Background Perinatal depressive symptoms have been linked to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. The etiology associated with perinatal depressive psychopathology is poorly understood, but accumulating evidence suggests that understanding inter-individual differences in DNA methylation (DNAm) patterning may provide insight regarding the genomic regions salient to the risk liability of perinatal depressive psychopathology.
Results Genome-wide DNAm was measured in maternal peripheral blood using the Infinium MethylationEPIC microarray. Ninety-two participants (46% African-American) had DNAm samples that passed all quality control metrics, and all participants were within 7 months of delivery. Linear models were constructed to identify differentially methylated sites and regions, and permutation testing was utilized to assess significance. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were defined as genomic regions of consistent DNAm change with at least two probes within 1 kb of each other. Maternal age, current smoking status, estimated cell-type proportions, ancestry-relevant principal components, days since delivery, and chip position served as covariates to adjust for technical and biological factors. Current postpartum depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Ninety-eight DMRs were significant (false discovery rate \u3c 5%) and overlapped 92 genes. Three of the regions overlap loci from the latest Psychiatric Genomics Consortium meta-analysis of depression.
Conclusions Many of the genes identified in this analysis corroborate previous allelic, transcriptomic, and DNAm association results related to depressive phenotypes. Future work should integrate data from multi-omic platforms to understand the functional relevance of these DMRs and refine DNAm association results by limiting phenotypic heterogeneity and clarifying if DNAm differences relate to the timing of onset, severity, duration of perinatal mental health outcomes of the current pregnancy or to previous history of depressive psychopathology
