    This study explores the reactions and related species of NOx pollutants in methane flames in order to understand their production and consumption during the combustion process. To do this, several analytical simulations were run to explore the behavior of nitrogen species in the pre-flame, post- flame, and reaction layer regions. The results were then analyzed in order to identify all steady-state species in the flame as well as the determine all the unnecessary reactions and species that are not required to meet a defined accuracy. The reductions were then applied and proven to be viable

    Degradation and breakdown characteristics of thin MgO dielectric layers

    MgO has been suggested as a possible high-k dielectric for future complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processes. In this work, the time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) characteristics of 20 nm MgO films are discussed. Stress induced leakage current measurements indicate that the low measured Weibull slopes of the TDDB distributions for both n-type and p-type devices cannot be attributed to a lower trap generation rate than for SiO2. This suggests that much fewer defects are required to trigger breakdown in MgO under voltage stress than is the case for SiO2 or other metal-oxide dielectrics. This in turn explains the progressive nature of the breakdown in these films which is observed both in this work and elsewhere. The reason fewer defects are required is attributed to the morphology of the films

    A Logic for Non-Deterministic Parallel Abstract State Machines

    We develop a logic which enables reasoning about single steps of non-deterministic parallel Abstract State Machines (ASMs). Our logic builds upon the unifying logic introduced by Nanchen and St\"ark for reasoning about hierarchical (parallel) ASMs. Our main contribution to this regard is the handling of non-determinism (both bounded and unbounded) within the logical formalism. Moreover, we do this without sacrificing the completeness of the logic for statements about single steps of non-deterministic parallel ASMs, such as invariants of rules, consistency conditions for rules, or step-by-step equivalence of rules.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1602.0748

    Making sense of IL-6 signalling cues in pathophysiology

    Unravelling the molecular mechanisms that account for functional pleiotropy is a major challenge for researchers in cytokine biology. Cytokine–receptor cross-reactivity and shared signalling pathways are considered primary drivers of cytokine pleiotropy. However, reports epitomized by studies of Jak-STAT cytokine signalling identify interesting biochemical and epigenetic determinants of transcription factor regulation that affect the delivery of signal-dependent cytokine responses. Here, a regulatory interplay between STAT transcription factors and their convergence to specific genomic enhancers support the fine-tuning of cytokine responses controlling host immunity, functional identity, and tissue homeostasis and repair. In this review, we provide an overview of the signalling networks that shape the way cells sense and interpret cytokine cues. With an emphasis on the biology of interleukin-6, we highlight the importance of these mechanisms to both physiological processes and pathophysiological outcomes

    The effect of HCl and steam on cyclic CO2 capture performance in calcium looping systems

    Calcium looping is CO2 capture technology that is considered to be technically feasible at an industrial scale using a variety of fuels such as natural gas, coals, biomass, refuse derived fuels, and biofuels. Unfortunately, many of these fuels contain significant quantities of chlorine which principally converts to gaseous HCl during combustion or gasification. To date, very few studies have examined the effect of HCl on sorbent CO2 capture performance using calcium-based sorbents under realistic carbonation and calcination conditions. In this work, experiments were conducted using thermogravimetric analysis and fixed bed reactor testing to determine the effect of HCl addition during carbonation and calcination over repeated cycles using a Canadian limestone. The presence of HCl was found to increase sorbent reactivity towards CO2 capture when steam was injected during calcination. The resulting decomposition of CaCl2 to CaO during calcination caused changes in the particle morphology, which in turn decreased the CO2 diffusional resistance during carbonation. Fixed bed test results provided confirmation of full sorbent dechlorination under typical oxy-fuel calcination conditions. It was shown that both particle surface area and pore volume were higher during tests where HCl was present during carbonation and that greater than 99% HCl capture could be achieved without adversely affecting sorbent CO2 capture performance when steam was present during both carbonation and calcination
