iRobot Corporations Intellectual Property: Accounting For Research And Development Under U.S. GAAP Versus IFRS

    Get PDF
Founded by MIT scientists in 1990, iRobot Corporation designed, developed, and sold consumer and military robots to help people complete dull, dirty or dangerous tasks in real-world situations. The purpose of this case study is to stimulate discussion about intellectual property and how it should be measured and reported. Under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), iRobot reported no asset related to their internally generated intellectual property despite over 20 years of intensive research in robotics. In contrast, international financial reporting standards (IFRS) permitted firms to treat certain research and development (R&D) activities as an asset. By comparing U.S. GAAP and IFRS treatments of R&D, we provide an interesting example of the range of potential financial reporting effects across alternative accounting methods. Further, the case requires that students wrestle with the implications of moving from more rule-based accounting (U.S. GAAP) to more principles-based accounting (IFRS). How might U.S. managers, auditors, and investors likely respond? A teaching note is available

    Bowen-York Tensors

There is derived, for a conformally flat three-space, a family of linear second-order partial differential operators which send vectors into tracefree, symmetric two-tensors. These maps, which are parametrized by conformal Killing vectors on the three-space, are such that the divergence of the resulting tensor field depends only on the divergence of the original vector field. In particular these maps send source-free electric fields into TT-tensors. Moreover, if the original vector field is the Coulomb field on R3\{0}\mathbb{R}^3\backslash \lbrace0\rbrace, the resulting tensor fields on R3\{0}\mathbb{R}^3\backslash \lbrace0\rbrace are nothing but the family of TT-tensors originally written down by Bowen and York.Comment: 12 pages, Contribution to CQG Special Issue "A Spacetime Safari: Essays in Honour of Vincent Moncrief

CEO Extraversion and the Cost of Equity Capital

    Get PDF
We examine whether CEO extraversion, an important personality trait associated with leadership, is associated with firms\u27 expected cost of equity capital. We measure CEO extraversion using CEOs\u27 speech patterns during the unscripted portion of conference calls. After controlling for multiple CEO and firm-specific variables, we find a strong positive incremental association between CEO extraversion and firms\u27 expected cost of capital. Moreover, cost of equity increases when a more extraverted CEO replaces a less extraverted CEO. In addition, we find that firms with relatively extraverted CEOs take more risk and exhibit lower credit ratings, which is associated with higher cost of equity capital. These results are statistically and economically meaningful and do not appear to be driven by reverse causality, endogenous matching, look-ahead bias, or bias in analysts\u27 earnings forecast

Modeling Oxygen Uptake during V1 Treadmill Roller Skiing

    Get PDF
The use of regression equations to predict oxygen uptake in relation to speed, grade, power output, and anthropometric characteristics is common in cardiac rehabilitation and athlete fitness testing. Research has suggested that sport specific testing improves the reliability of the test methodology and is appropriate for the development of effective training programs. This study focused on the development of a cross-country skiing specific predictor of maximal oxygen uptake based on treadmill speed, treadmill grade, gender, and body mass. This project simulated snow skiing on a large research treadmill using roller skis. A small sample size (N = 34) warranted the use of bootstrapping techniques and multiple regression analysis to develop a cross-country skiing specific model of oxygen uptake. The stability of each bootstrapped sample was confirmed via a cross-validation procedure. The equation of best resolve was: VO2 = -4.534 + 0.223(G) + 0.061(BM) + 0.139(TG) + 0.016(TS) in which G = Gender, BM = Body Mass, TG = Treadmill Grade, TS = Treadmill Speed. The resultant model can be used to design training programs, develop athlete fitness testing or research protocols, and to predict maximal oxygen uptake when sophisticated metabolic measurement equipment is unavailable

    Get PDF
Purpose: Given rising rates of deadly melanoma skin cancer in Hispanics, the study objective was to examine skin cancer-related risk reduction behaviors and beliefs to dictate content for culturally targeted skin cancer prevention strategies for Hispanics. Methods/Data Source: An anonymous survey was administered to waiting room volunteers in a primary care facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico to assess skin cancer risk reduction behaviors, screening, cancer information seeking and communication, as well as skin cancer beliefs in Hispanics (n=48) and Non-Hispanic Whites (n=36). Results: We found lower levels of sun protection clothing use among Hispanics compared to Non-Hispanic Whites, but comparable use of sunscreen and shade-seeking among these groups. Hispanic ethnicity was the most important predictor of skin cancer misconceptions, with skin cancer information overload and misconceptions reported more often in Hispanics. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the need for culturally relevant information for ethnic minority populations such as Hispanics who have shown an increased risk of presenting with later stage, more aggressive melanoma skin cancer

The Sextet Arcs: a Strongly Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy in the ACS Spectroscopic Galaxy Survey towards Abell 1689

We present results of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys spectroscopic ground-based redshift survey in the field of A1689. We measure 98 redshifts, increasing the number of spectroscopically confirmed objects by sixfold. We present two spectra from this catalog of the Sextet Arcs, images which arise from a strongly-lensed Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at a redshift of z=3.038. Gravitational lensing by the cluster magnifies its flux by a factor of ~16 and produces six separate images with a total r-band magnitude of r_625=21.7. The two spectra, each of which represents emission from different regions of the LBG, show H I and interstellar metal absorption lines at the systemic redshift. Significant variations are seen in Ly-alpha profile across a single galaxy, ranging from strong absorption to a combination of emission plus absorption. A spectrum of a third image close to the brightest arc shows Ly-alpha emission at the same redshift as the LBG, arising from either another spatially distinct region of the galaxy, or from a companion galaxy close to the LBG. Taken as a group, the Ly-alpha equivalent width in these three spectra decreases with increasing equivalent width of the strongest interstellar absorption lines. We discuss how these variations can be used to understand the physical conditions in the LBG. Intrinsically, this LBG is faint, ~0.1L*, and forming stars at a modest rate, ~4 solar masses per year. We also detect absorption line systems toward the Sextet Arcs at z=2.873 and z=2.534. The latter system is seen across two of our spectra.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

Sixteen years of Collaborative Learning through Active Sense-making in Physics (CLASP) at UC Davis

This paper describes our large reformed introductory physics course at UC Davis, which bioscience students have been taking since 1996. The central feature of this course is a focus on sense-making by the students during the five hours per week discussion/labs in which the students take part in activities emphasizing peer-peer discussions, argumentation, and presentations of ideas. The course differs in many fundamental ways from traditionally taught introductory physics courses. After discussing the unique features of CLASP and its implementation at UC Davis, various student outcome measures are presented showing increased performance by students who took the CLASP course compared to students who took a traditionally taught introductory physics course. Measures we use include upper-division GPAs, MCAT scores, FCI gains, and MPEX-II scores.Comment: Also submitted to American Journal of Physic

Isolated angioedema of the bowel due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency: a case report and review of literature

    Get PDF

Abstract

Introduction

We report a rare, classic case of isolated angioedema of the bowel due to C1-esterase inhibitor deficiency. It is a rare presentation and very few cases have been reported worldwide. Angioedema has been classified into three categories.

Case presentation

A 66-year-old Caucasian man presented with a ten-month history of episodic severe cramping abdominal pain, associated with loose stools. A colonoscopy performed during an acute attack revealed nonspecific colitis. Computed tomography of the abdomen performed at the same time showed a thickened small bowel and ascending colon with a moderate amount of free fluid in the abdomen. Levels of C4 (< 8 mg/dL; reference range 15 to 50 mg/dL), CH50 (< 10 U/mL; reference range 29 to 45 U/ml) and C1 inhibitor (< 4 mg/dL; reference range 14 to 30 mg/dL) were all low, supporting a diagnosis of acquired angioedema with isolated bowel involvement. Our patient's symptoms improved with antihistamine and supportive treatment.

Conclusion

In addition to a detailed comprehensive medical history, laboratory data and imaging studies are required to confirm a diagnosis of angioedema due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency.</p
