The primary purpose of this study is to determine what the needs of the public schools in the state of Washington are in relation to recreation leadership so that the higher educational institutions of the state may have some basis for the planning and organization of their teacher training programs. The secondary purpose of this study is to enable the students who are preparing themselves for entering this field to have some idea of the opportunities and the disadvantages that prevail in this area of work

A weak Hamiltonian finite element method for optimal control problems

    Get PDF
A temporal finite element method based on a mixed form of the Hamiltonian weak principle is developed for dynamics and optimal control problems. The mixed form of Hamilton's weak principle contains both displacements and momenta as primary variables that are expanded in terms of nodal values and simple polynomial shape functions. Unlike other forms of Hamilton's principle, however, time derivatives of the momenta and displacements do not appear therein; instead, only the virtual momenta and virtual displacements are differentiated with respect to time. Based on the duality that is observed to exist between the mixed form of Hamilton's weak principle and variational principles governing classical optimal control problems, a temporal finite element formulation of the latter can be developed in a rather straightforward manner. Several well-known problems in dynamics and optimal control are illustrated. The example dynamics problem involves a time-marching problem. As optimal control examples, elementary trajectory optimization problems are treated

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Regulation of Alcoholic Beverages Generally: Provide Exemption for Transportation of Alcoholic Beverages for Personal or Household Use

    Get PDF
The Act permits individuals to transport limited quantities of alcoholic beverages purchased outside of Georgia that are for personal or household use and for which the state excise tax has been paid. The Act requires that individuals transporting alcoholic beverages in excess of the amount exempted from payment of excise taxes must have proof of payment of the excise taxes. The Act provides for special order shipping licenses that exempt holders from general licensing requirements when transporting limited quantities of wine directly to consumers for personal or household use. The Act also permits wineries to ship limited quantities of wine directly to consumers under certain conditions without requiring the winery to be licensed or to comply with general licensing requirements

A new apparatus for paper electrophoresis

In paper electrophoresis, taking the idealized case, a charged particle, i.e. a particle which has an excess or deficiency of electrons, resulting in a net electrostatic charge is placed on a strip of moistened filter paper. The moistening is usually done by a buffer solution which serves two purposes: 1. It provides a liquid phase within the structure of the paper through which the particle can travel. 2. It keeps a constant pH throughout the run. After experimenting with several types of apparatus the author decided that a new type of apparatus was needed and could be designed which would eliminate many of the difficulties which were inherent in other types of apparatus. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to design, build, and test a new apparatus which would satisfy this need. Some experimental results were also to be obtained

A finite element based method for solution of optimal control problems

    Get PDF
A temporal finite element based on a mixed form of the Hamiltonian weak principle is presented for optimal control problems. The mixed form of this principle contains both states and costates as primary variables that are expanded in terms of elemental values and simple shape functions. Unlike other variational approaches to optimal control problems, however, time derivatives of the states and costates do not appear in the governing variational equation. Instead, the only quantities whose time derivatives appear therein are virtual states and virtual costates. Also noteworthy among characteristics of the finite element formulation is the fact that in the algebraic equations which contain costates, they appear linearly. Thus, the remaining equations can be solved iteratively without initial guesses for the costates; this reduces the size of the problem by about a factor of two. Numerical results are presented herein for an elementary trajectory optimization problem which show very good agreement with the exact solution along with excellent computational efficiency and self-starting capability. The goal is to evaluate the feasibility of this approach for real-time guidance applications. To this end, a simplified two-stage, four-state model for an advanced launch vehicle application is presented which is suitable for finite element solution

Scientifically Defensible and Measurable Anti-Phishing Training

Problem: How can the effectiveness of a phishing attack be quantified and/or measured? Applications: This project will provide a resource for Idaho National Labs to quantitavely evaluate the effectiveness of their security awareness program in regards to phishing attacks. In turn, it will aid them in hardening the human element of security at the research facility. Approach: Our approach is to construct a fully functional phishing system where we can craft phishing emails, send emails, and place links that point to our web application. We hope to use this system to conduct an anonymous and non-malicious experiment. This data will assist in the design and implementation of the algorithm that will evaluate the relative effectiveness of a phishing email. Interim Results: At this point in time we have have started the experimental approval process and developed a functioning phishing system to use in our experiment. We have created the framework in which to construct our algorithm. Anticipated Results: Next Semester we plan to have a fully functioning phishing email evaluation algorithm. In addition are trying to run a live phishing study at VCU and if it is approved, itwill provide valuable data on the accuracy of our algorithm.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/capstone/1027/thumbnail.jp

    Rotorcraft aeroelastic stability

Theoretical and experimental developments in the aeroelastic and aeromechanical stability of helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft are addressed. Included are the underlying nonlinear structural mechanics of slender rotating beams, necessary for accurate modeling of elastic cantilever rotor blades, and the development of dynamic inflow, an unsteady aerodynamic theory for low-frequency aeroelastic stability applications. Analytical treatment of isolated rotor stability in hover and forward flight, coupled rotor-fuselage stability in hover and forward flight, and analysis of tilt-rotor dynamic stability are considered. Results of parametric investigations of system behavior are presented, and correlation between theoretical results and experimental data from small and large scale wind tunnel and flight testing are discussed
