    A Site of Alcohol Action at the NMDA Receptor M3-M4 Domain Interface

    The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor is a major target of ethanol in the brain. Previous studies have identified positions in the third and fourth membrane-associated (M) domains of the NMDA receptor GluN1 and GluN2A subunits that influence alcohol sensitivity. The structural model of the NMDA receptor, predicted from the structure of the related GluA2 subunit, indicates a close apposition of the alcohol-sensitive positions in M3 and M4 between the two subunit types. We investigated possible interactions between the M3 and M4 domain positions of the two subunit types affecting the ethanol sensitivity of the receptor by using dual substitution mutants. In an initial screen of single-substitution mutants, we found that a position in both subunits adjacent to one previously identified, GluN1(G638) and GluN2A(F636), can strongly regulate ethanol sensitivity. Significant interactions affecting ethanol inhibition were observed at four pairs of positions in GluN1/GluN2A: G638/M823, F639/L824, M818/F636, and L819/F637. Two of these interactions involve a position in M4 of both subunits, GluN1(M818) and GluN2A(L824), that does not by itself alter ethanol sensitivity, and one of the previously identified positions affecting ethanol sensitivity, GluN2A(A825), did not appear to interact with any other position tested. These results also indicate a shift by one position of the predicted alignment of the GluN1 M4 domain. These findings have allowed for the refinement of the NMDA receptor M domain structure, and support the existence of four sites of alcohol action on the NMDA receptor at the M3-M4 domain intersubunit interfaces.     Who Shrunk China? Puzzles in the Measurement of Real GDP

    The latest World Bank estimates of real GDP per capita for China are significantly lower than previous ones. We review possible sources of this puzzle and conclude that it reflects a combination of factors, including substitution bias in consumption, reliance on urban prices which we estimate are higher than rural ones, and the use of an expenditure-weighted rather than an output-weighted measure of GDP. Taking all these together, we estimate that real per-capita GDP in China was 50% higher relative to the U.S. in 2005 than the World Bank estimates.

    Improvements in vortex flow control design to increase sewer network flood resistance

Many sewer networks, regardless whether the systems have a flow control installed, are predicted to become stressed in the future due to the effects of climate change, population growth and urbanisation. This issue is compounded by the age of the Britain’s sewerage infrastructure as well as the cost and difficulty of replacing and upgrading the infrastructure. Statutory ‘Catchment Flood Management Plans’ have been introduced within the United Kingdom to tackle this issue by better understanding the flow path of flood water on a catchment scale. This paper discusses a method to maximise the use of the current sewerage infrastructure by installing flow controls, meaning a greater volume of the sewer network can be used for stormwater storage. This paper continues by describing a method of increasing a sewer network’s flood resistance by using vortex flow controls with a lower design flow-rate compared to an orifice plate. This paper then concludes by describing three case studies demonstrating the use vortex flow controls when retrofitting sewer networks as well as the impact of implementing the retrofit design method.EPSRCSTREAM IDCHydro Internationa

    A Parameterization Invariant Approach to the Statistical Estimation of the CKM Phase α\alpha

    In contrast to previous analyses, we demonstrate a Bayesian approach to the estimation of the CKM phase α\alpha that is invariant to parameterization. We also show that in addition to {\em computing} the marginal posterior in a Bayesian manner, the distribution must also be {\em interpreted} from a subjective Bayesian viewpoint. Doing so gives a very natural interpretation to the distribution.     Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an atomic waveguide

    The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system.     The Lieb-Liniger Model as a Limit of Dilute Bosons in Three Dimensions

    We show that the Lieb-Liniger model for one-dimensional bosons with repulsive ÎŽ\delta-function interaction can be rigorously derived via a scaling limit from a dilute three-dimensional Bose gas with arbitrary repulsive interaction potential of finite scattering length. For this purpose, we prove bounds on both the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of three-dimensional bosons in strongly elongated traps and relate them to the corresponding quantities in the Lieb-Liniger model. In particular, if both the scattering length aa and the radius rr of the cylindrical trap go to zero, the Lieb-Liniger model with coupling constant g∌a/r2g \sim a/r^2 is derived. Our bounds are uniform in gg in the whole parameter range 0≀g≀∞0\leq g\leq \infty, and apply to the Hamiltonian for three-dimensional bosons in a spectral window of size ∌r−2\sim r^{-2} above the ground state energy.Comment: LaTeX2e, 19 page

    Torsion and the Gravity Dual of Parity Symmetry Breaking in AdS4/CFT3 Holography

    We study four dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant deformed by the Nieh-Yan torsional topological invariant with a spacetime-dependent coefficient. We find an exact solution of the Euclidean system, which we call the torsion vortex, having two asymptotic AdS4 regimes supported by a pseudoscalar with a kink profile. We propose that the torsion vortex is the holographic dual of a three dimensional system that exhibits distinct parity breaking vacua. The torsion vortex represents a (holographic) transition between these distinct vacua. We expect that from the boundary point of view, the torsion vortex represents a `domain wall' between the two distinct vacua. From a bulk point of view, we point out an intriguing identification of the parameters of the torsion vortex with those of an Abrikosov vortex in a Type I superconductor. Following the analogy, we find that external Kalb-Ramond flux then appears to support bubbles of flat spacetime within an asymptotically AdS geometry.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor improvements, references adde

    Size-Dependent Trophic Patterns of Pallid Sturgeon and Shovelnose Sturgeon in a Large River System

    This study compared patterns of d15N and d13C enrichment of pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus and shovelnose sturgeon S. platorynchus in the Missouri River, United States, to infer their trophic position in a large river system. We examined enrichment and energy flow for pallid sturgeon in three segments of the Missouri River (Montana/North Dakota, Nebraska/South Dakota, and Nebraska/Iowa) and made comparisons between species in the two downstream segments (Nebraska/South Dakota and Nebraska/Iowa). Patterns in isotopic composition for pallid sturgeon were consistent with gut content analyses indicating an ontogenetic diet shift from invertebrates to fish prey at sizes of .500-mm fork length (FL) in all three segments of the Missouri River. Isotopic patterns revealed shovelnose sturgeon did not experience an ontogenetic shift in diet and used similar prey resources as small (,500-mm FL) pallid sturgeon in the two downstream segments.     Fitting a sum of exponentials to lattice correlation functions using a non-uniform prior

    Excited states are extracted from lattice correlation functions using a non-uniform prior on the model parameters. Models for both a single exponential and a sum of exponentials are considered, as well as an alternate model for the orthogonalization of the correlation functions. Results from an analysis of torelon and glueball operators indicate the Bayesian methodology compares well with the usual interpretation of effective mass tables produced by a variational procedure.     MaxEnt power spectrum estimation using the Fourier transform for irregularly sampled data applied to a record of stellar luminosity

    The principle of maximum entropy is applied to the spectral analysis of a data signal with general variance matrix and containing gaps in the record. The role of the entropic regularizer is to prevent one from overestimating structure in the spectrum when faced with imperfect data. Several arguments are presented suggesting that the arbitrary prefactor should not be introduced to the entropy term. The introduction of that factor is not required when a continuous Poisson distribution is used for the amplitude coefficients. We compare the formalism for when the variance of the data is known explicitly to that for when the variance is known only to lie in some finite range. The result of including the entropic measure factor is to suggest a spectrum consistent with the variance of the data which has less structure than that given by the forward transform.
