Spatial Optimization of Residential Urban District - Energy and Water Perspectives
AbstractMany cities around the world have reached a critical situation when it comes to energy and water supply, threatening the urban sustainable development. The aim of this paper is to develop a spatial optimization model for the planning of residential urban districts with special consideration of renewables and water harvesting integration. In particular, the paper analyses the optimal configuration of built environment area, PV area, wind turbines number and relative occupation area, battery and water harvester storage capacities, as a function of electricity and water prices. The optimization model is multi-objective which uses a genetic algorithm to minimize the system life cycle costs, and maximize renewables and water harvesting reliability. The developed model can be used for spatial optimization design of new urban districts. It can also be employed for analyzing the performances of existing urban districts under an energy-water-economic viewpoint.Assuming a built environment area equal to 75% of the total available area, the results show that the reliability of the renewables and water harvesting system cannot exceed the 6475 and 2500 hours/year, respectively. The life cycle costs of integrating renewables and water harvesting into residential districts are mainly sensitive to the battery system specific costs since most of the highest renewables reliabilities are guaranteed through the energy storage system
Modelling an Inertia Wheel Pendulum Benchmark
In this paper, modelling and parameter identification of an inertia wheel pendulum benchmark is considered. This is an underactuated mechanical system useful for teaching and research. Attention is focused on deriving a simple but accurate model capable of reproducing large amplitude oscillations. Due to the particular design of the prototype, the friction forces on the actuated joint are noticeable. A simple friction model including dead-zone effects and viscous terms is proposed, and a compensation method for the dead zone is derived. The accuracy of the compensation strategy and the predictive quality of the derived model are analysed by comparing numerical simulations with experimental data.Fil: Alonso, Diego. On semi-analytical procedure for detecting limit cycle bifurcations
This paper reports some computation of periodic solutions arising from Hopf bifurcations in order to build up a more accurate procedure for semi-analytical approximations to detect limit cycle bifurcations. The approximation formulas are derived using nonlinear feedback systems theory and the harmonic balance method. The monodromy matrix is computed for several simple nonlinear flows to detect the first bifurcation of the cycles in the neighborhood of the original Hopf bifurcation.Fil: Robbio, Federico I.. Detection of limit cycle bifurcations using harmonic balance methods
In this paper, bifurcations of limit cycles close to certain singularities of the vector fields are explored using an algorithm based on the harmonic balance method, the theory of nonlinear feedback systems and the monodromy matrix. Period-doubling, pitchfork and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations of cycles are detected close to a Gavrilov–Guckenheimer singularity in two modified Rössler systems. This special singularity has a zero eigenvalue and a pair of pure imaginary eigenvalues in the linearization of the flow around its equilibrium. The presented results suggest that the proposed technique can be promising in analyzing limit cycle bifurcations arising in the unfoldings of other complex singularities.Fil: Robbio, Federico I.. Bifurcation theory and harmonic content of oscillations
The harmonic content of periodic solutions in ODEs is obtained using standard techniques of harmonic balance and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). For the first method, the harmonic content is attained in the vicinity of the Hopf bifurcation condition where a smooth branch of oscilations is born under the variation of a distinguished parameter. The second technique is applied directly to numerical simulation, which is assumed to be the correct solution. Although the first method is local, it provides an excellent tool to characterize the periodic behavior in the unfoldings of other more complex singularities, such as the double Hopf bifurcation (DHB). An example with a DBH is analyzed with this methodology and the FFT algorithm.Fil: Itovich, Griselda Rut. Universidad Nacional del Comahue; ArgentinaFil: Robbio, Federico I.. Harmonic distortion analysis based on Hopf bifurcation theorem and fast fourier transform
A frequency domain method is used to estimate the harmonic contents of a smooth oscillation arising from the Hopf bifurcation mechanism. The harmonic contents up to the eighth-order are well estimated, which agree with the results obtained from a completely different approach that measures the frequency content of a signal by using digital signal processing techniques such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The accuracy of the approximation is evaluated by computing the Floquet multipliers of the variational system based on the fact that for periodic solutions one multiplier must be +1. The separation from this theoretical value is proportional to the error of the approximation. A limitation of the frequency domain method is encountered when being used for continuing the secondary branch of limit cycle bifurcations, such as pitchfork and period-doubling bifurcations. Two examples are shown to illustrate the main results: Colpitts' oscillator with a pitchfork bifurcation of cycles, and Chua's circuit with a period-doubling bifurcation of cycles.Fil: Robbio, Federico I.. On limit cycle approximations in the van der Pol oscillator
This paper applies bifurcation analysis to the well-known van der Pol oscillator to obtain approximations of its periodic solutions in the nearly sinusoidal regime. A frequency domain method based on harmonic balance approximations is used for small values of the bifurcation parameter. Moreover, a comparison with some other frequency domain approaches is also given. Finally, a total harmonic distortion is computed using the information provided by the frequency domain approach.Fil: Padín, Mirta S..
