    Chemical evolution in the environment of intermediate mass young stellar objects: NGC7129--FIRS2 and LkHα\alpha234

    We have carried out a molecular survey of the Class 0 IM protostar NGC 7129 -- FIRS 2 (hereafter FIRS 2) and the Herbig Be star LkHα\alpha 234 with the aim of studying the chemical evolution of the envelopes of intermediate-mass (IM) young stellar objects (YSOs). Both objects have similar luminosities (~500 Lsun) and are located in the same molecular cloud which minimizes the chemical differences due to different stellar masses or initial cloud conditions. Moreover, since they are located at the same distance, we have the same spatial resolution in both objects. A total of 17 molecular species (including rarer isotopes) have been observed in both objects and the structure of their envelopes and outflows is determined with unprecedent detail. Our results show that the protostellar envelopes are dispersed and warmed up during the evolution to become a pre-main sequence star. In fact, the envelope mass decreases by a factor >5 from FIRS 2 to LkHα\alpha234, while the kinetic temperature increases from ~13K to 28K. On the other hand, there is no molecular outflow associated with LkHα\alpha234. The molecular outflow seems to stop before the star becomes visible. These physical changes strongly affect the chemistry of their envelopes. Based on our results in FIRS2 and LkHα\alpha 234, we propose some abundance ratios that can be used as chemical clocks for the envelopes of IM YSOs. The SiO/CS, CN/N2H+, HCN/N2H+, DCO+/HCO+ and D2CO/DCO+ ratios are good diagnostics of the protostellar evolutionary stage.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure

    t-channel production of heavy charged leptons

    We study the pair production of heavy charged exotic leptons at e+ e- colliders in the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_I x U(1)_Y model. This gauge group is a subgroup of the grand unification group E6; SU(2)_I commutes with the electric charge operator, and the three corresponding gauge bosons are electrically neutral. In addition to the standard photon and Z boson contributions, we also include the contributions from extra neutral gauge bosons. A t-channel contribution due to W_I-boson exchange, which is unsuppressed by mixing angles, is quite important. We calculate the left-right and forward-backward asymmetries, and discuss how to differentiate different models.Comment: Increased discussion of experimental signatures. Version accepted by PR

    On kk-Core Percolation in Four Dimensions

    The kk-core percolation on the Bethe lattice has been proposed as a simple model of the jamming transition because of its hybrid first-order/second-order nature. We investigate numerically kk-core percolation on the four-dimensional regular lattice. For k=4k=4 the presence of a discontinuous transition is clearly established but its nature is strictly first order. In particular, the kk-core density displays no singular behavior before the jump and its correlation length remains finite. For k=3k=3 the transition is continuous

    From time series to superstatistics

    Complex nonequilibrium systems are often effectively described by a `statistics of a statistics', in short, a `superstatistics'. We describe how to proceed from a given experimental time series to a superstatistical description. We argue that many experimental data fall into three different universality classes: chi^2-superstatistics (Tsallis statistics), inverse chi^2-superstatistics, and log-normal superstatistics. We discuss how to extract the two relevant well separated superstatistical time scales tau and T, the probability density of the superstatistical parameter beta, and the correlation function for beta from the experimental data. We illustrate our approach by applying it to velocity time series measured in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, which is well described by log-normal superstatistics and exhibits clear time scale separation.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

    Against Chaos in Temperature in Mean-Field Spin-Glass Models

    We study the problem of chaos in temperature in some mean-field spin-glass models by means of a replica computation over a model of coupled systems. We propose a set of solutions of the saddle point equations which are intrinsically non-chaotic and solve a general problem regarding the consistency of their structure. These solutions are relevant in the case of uncoupled systems too, therefore they imply a non-trivial overlap distribution P(qT1T2)P(q_{T1T2}) between systems at different temperatures. The existence of such solutions is checked to fifth order in an expansion near the critical temperature through highly non-trivial cancellations, while it is proved that a dangerous set of such cancellations holds exactly at all orders in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. The SK model with soft-spin distribution is also considered obtaining analogous results. Previous analytical results are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, submitted to J.Phys.

    Rejuvenation in the Random Energy Model

    We show that the Random Energy Model has interesting rejuvenation properties in its frozen phase. Different `susceptibilities' to temperature changes, for the free-energy and for other (`magnetic') observables, can be computed exactly.     Mid-infrared PAH and H2 emission as a probe of physical conditions in extreme PDRs

    Mid-infrared (IR) observations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and molecular hydrogen emission are a potentially powerful tool to derive physical properties of dense environments irradiated by intense UV fields. We present new, spatially resolved, \emph{Spitzer} mid-IR spectroscopy of the high UV-field and dense photodissocation region (PDR) around Monoceros R2, the closest ultracompact \hII region, revealing the spatial structure of ionized gas, PAHs and H2_2 emissions. Using a PDR model and PAH emission feature fitting algorithm, we build a comprehensive picture of the physical conditions prevailing in the region. We show that the combination of the measurement of PAH ionization fraction and of the ratio between the H2_2 0-0 S(3) and S(2) line intensities, respectively at 9.7 and 12.3 ÎŒ\mum, allows to derive the fundamental parameters driving the PDR: temperature, density and UV radiation field when they fall in the ranges T=250−1500T = 250-1500 K, nH=104−106n_H=10^4-10^6cm−3^{-3}, G0=103−105G_0=10^3-10^5 respectively. These mid-IR spectral tracers thus provide a tool to probe the similar but unresolved UV-illuminated surface of protoplanetary disks or the nuclei of starburst galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    The WW-boson pair production in e−e−e^-e^- collisions with polarized beams is investigated. The helicity amplitudes are derived for general couplings and the conditions for a good high-energy behaviour of the cross-section are given. The results are applied to the heavy vector boson production in the context of the left-right symmetric model.     Single WRW_R Production in e−e−e^-e^- Collisions at the NLC

    Single WRW_R production in e−e−e^-e^- collisions at the NLC can be used to probe the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos present in the Left-Right Symmetric Model below the kinematic threshold for their direct production. For colliders in the s=1−1.5\sqrt {s}=1-1.5 TeV range, typical cross sections of order 1−10fb1-10 fb are obtained, depending on the specific choice of model parameters. Backgrounds arising from Standard Model processes are shown to be small. This analysis greatly extends the kinematic range of previous studies wherein the production of an on-shell, like-sign pair of WRW_R's at the NLC was considered.Comment: 13pp, 3 figures (available on request), LaTex, SLAC-PUB-647
