Staff perspectives on enterprise culture - A tale of two colleges 2011-2016

A great deal has been written particularly about enterprise and entrepreneurship education and small businesses, but very little research has been undertaken into enterprise culture on an institutional level in educational establishments. My thesis, based on a series of qualitative interviews conducted in 2016, gives staff in two FE colleges the opportunity to reflect upon enterprise culture. The multi-level ecological framework developed by Hodgson and Spours is used to provide a means of considering the international, national, local and institutional over-lapping components of the FE system as a whole. This is the first study of its kind and concentrates on gaining an understanding of how staff at various levels define enterprise culture, how enterprise culture manifests itself on a day to day basis and the consequences of these cultures in FE colleges. The framework on types of enterprise culture developed by the sociologist Ritchie is coupled with the rituals and routines, stories and symbols dimensions of the Cultural Web from Johnson and Scholes to analyse the views of staff within the case study institutions. The research undertaken has allowed me to highlight what facilitates success in undertaking enterprise activity as well as what works against successful engagement in FE colleges. The deductive approach taken to data analysis has enabled me to put together a simple model that can support FE colleges who seek to develop a framework that aids their engagement with enterprise-related projects and activities

    Characters in Brief: Cartwright’s TWO

TWO is a play written by Jim Cartwright an English dramatist. Cartwright designs TWO such that two actors can play all the characters. This paper is an analytical study which draws inferences based largely on descriptions of the setting and of the characters, and on the dialogues and monologues by the playwright in TWO.TWO like dramas do, holds up a mirror to life such that as citizens of life we cannot miss our self-semblances in the images that Cartwright so poignantly evokes. The paper concludes that Cartwright’s TWO is predominated by the theme of love and appears primarily, to be a commentary on the relevance of age, obesity, infidelity, incompatibility, denunciation, abuse and death in consensual, as well as romantic relationships.

A cross-sectional study was carried out among forty healthcare professionals working at oncology units in two hospitals (public and private) in Accra, Ghana to assess the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals in relation to diet and nutrition recommendations for breast cancer prevention. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on healthcare workers demographics, knowledge and attitudes on diet and nutrition for breast cancer prevention. Knowledge scores were calculated for all correct responses. Test of associations employed Pearson's correlation statistical tool with level of significance set at p < 0.05. Ninety percent of the healthcare professionals had average or above average total knowledge score. Majority of the healthcare professionals did not have knowledge about recommended alcohol limits for men (82.5%) and women (77.5%). More than half (57.5%) of the healthcare professionals did not have knowledge of high calorie foods. Dietary advice was perceived to be the responsibility of dieticians (72.5%); however, 90% of the healthcare professionals were willing to provide dietary advice. A very weak correlation was found between years in clinical practice post qualification and their nutrition knowledge (Pearson’s r = 0.008, p=0.178). Thirty-five percent of them reported lack of expertise as a barrier to providing dietary advice to patients. Whereas majority of the healthcare professionals had average or above knowledge of diet and nutrition recommendations for breast cancer prevention, few had sufficient practical nutrition knowledge. This highlights the need to include practical nutrition education in the training of healthcare professionals. A Road Maintenance Management Information System for Counties and Cities

County Highway Departments in Indiana follow guidelines approved by the State Board of Accounts, mainly for highway resource accounting and not for maintenance activity costing. The existing Daily Work Report Form was modified to help maintenance activity costing with more precise reporting of road location, equipment and material use and also for storage on a microcomputer database. The Highway Extension and Research Project for Indiana Counties and Cities (HERPICC) at Purdue University tested the recommended procedures in a pilot project with White County Highway Department in Indiana, U.S.A.. A user-friendly program was developed using the R-Base 5000 database software for maintenance activity accounting and has been recommended for use by county highway and city street departments in Indiana. In addition, organizational requirements such as maintenance staff training, requirements for road inventory and road section demarcation, and special considerations for unpaved road maintenance activities such as dragging, grading, spot regraveling and the reporting required are described
