    Quantum Interference in the Kirkwood-Rihaczek representation

    We discuss the Kirkwood-Rihaczek phase space distribution and analyze a whole new class of quasi-distributions connected with this function. All these functions have the correct marginals. We construct a coherent state representation of such functions, discuss which operator ordering corresponds to the Kirkwood-Rihaczek distribution and their generalizations, and show how such states are connected to squeezed states. Quantum interference in the Kirkwood-Rihaczek representation is discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Talbot effect in cylindrical waveguides

    We extend the theory of Talbot revivals for planar or rectangular geometry to the case of cylindrical waveguides. We derive a list of conditions that are necessary to obtain revivals in cylindrical waveguides. A phase space approach based on the Wigner and the Kirkwood-Rihaczek functions provides a pictorial representation of TM modes interference associated with the Talbot effect

    Selecting the lorenz parameters for wideband radar waveform generation

    Radar waveforms based on chaotic systems have occasionally been suggested for a variety of radar applications. In this paper, radar waveforms are constructed with solutions from a particular chaotic system, the Lorenz system, and are called Lorenz waveforms. Waveform properties, which include the peak autocorrelation function side-lobe and the transmit power level, are related to the system parameters of the Lorenz system. Additionally, scaling the system parameters is shown to correspond to an approximate time and amplitude scaling of Lorenz waveforms and also corresponds to scaling the waveform bandwidth. The Lorenz waveforms can be generated with arbitrary time lengths and bandwidths and each waveform can be represented with only a few system parameters. Furthermore, these waveforms can then be systematically improved to yield constant-envelope output waveforms with low autocorrelation function sidelobes and limited spectral leakage.United States.     We present a phase-space representation of the hydrogen atom using the Kirkwood-Rikaczek distribution function. This distribution allows us to obtain analytical results, which is quite unique because an exact analytical form of the Wigner functions corresponding to the atom states is not known. We show how the Kirkwood-Rihaczek distribution reflects properties of the hydrogen atom wave functions in position and momentum representations.Comment: 5 pages (and 5 figures

    Quasi light fields: extending the light field to coherent radiation

    Imaging technologies such as dynamic viewpoint generation are engineered for incoherent radiation using the traditional light field, and for coherent radiation using electromagnetic field theory. We present a model of coherent image formation that strikes a balance between the utility of the light field and the comprehensive predictive power of Maxwell's equations. We synthesize research in optics and signal processing to formulate, capture, and form images from quasi light fields, which extend the light field from incoherent to coherent radiation. Our coherent cameras generalize the classic beamforming algorithm in sensor array processing, and invite further research on alternative notions of image formation.Comment: This paper was published in JOSA A.
