    La petite chapelle de Centeilles, perdue dans les vignes de Siran dans l’Hérault, fut entièrement décorée de peintures murales, jusqu’à son porche d’entrée. Des décors géométriques et une Annonciation d’époque gothique ornent l’ensemble de la chapelle ; son Arbre de Jessé et la Sortie des limbes datent du XVe siècle.La chapelle de Centeilles a fait l’objet d’entretiens réguliers et d’attentions fréquentes depuis la découverte de ses décors dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle et pourtant son état de dégradation est inquiétant et général. Non pas faute de soins, mais peut être suite à des erreurs techniques, des choix sur le court terme demandent à être révisés aujourd’hui. L’exemple de la chapelle de Centeilles est un cas révélateur de nos urgences qu’il nous incombe d’interpréter. À quoi sert de répondre dans l’urgence par une consolidation d’enduits décollés si un diagnostic des causes fondamentales n’est pas mis en place ?The small chapel of Centeilles, lost in the vineyards of the Hérault, was entirely covered with wall paintings, right up to its entrance porch. Geometric decorations and a Gothic Annunciation adorn the whole chapel; its tree of Jesse and the exit from limbo date to the 15th century.The chapel of Centeilles has been the object of regular maintenance and frequent attention since the discovery of its decorations in the second half of the 20th century and yet its state of deterioration is worrisome, not for lack of care, but perhaps as a result of technical errors and short-term choices that need to be revised today. The example of the Centeilles Chapel is a revealing case of how we must interpret the different phases of renovations. What is the point of responding urgently to a consolidation of detached plaster if a diagnosis of the fundamental causes is not put in place

    Field Evaluation with Cognitively-Impaired Older Adults of Attention Management in the Embodied Conversational Agent Louise

    International audienceWe present the first experiment we conducted to evaluate the attention monitoring performance of Louise, following a Wizard of Oz method, during the interactions with a cohort of 8 elderly users in a day hospital environment. Louise is a new, semi-automatic prototype of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA), a virtual character interacting with users through social-like communication, adapted to the special needs of older adults with cognitive impairment; it is intended to ultimately provide assistance in their activities of daily living. We recorded and analyzed both videos of the conversation-like interactions and Louise's tracking data. In our experiment, Louise's attention estimation algorithm achieved about 80% accuracy; moreover, in almost all cases, the user's attention was successfully recaptured by Louise after a planned, experimenter-induced distraction. These results are in line with what was observed in previous experiments involving only younger adults, thus suggesting that attention measurement tools embedded in cognitive prostheses will not need to be adapted to elderly patients. Finally, to gain further insights on conversation management and provide evidence-based suggestions for future work, we performed an anthropological analysis of the whole experiment

    Virtual Promenade: A New Serious Game for the Rehabilitation of Older Adults with Post-fall Syndrome

    International audience—We introduce a novel rehabilitation tool to treat Post-Fall Syndrome (PFS) in older adults: a serious game, called Virtual Promenade, combined with a haptic chair imitating the hips movements of human walk. We report on the user-centered design of our prototype, following " living lab " principles, which was well received by our test participants. This system aims at addressing the psycho-motor consequences of older adults' falls; they are often neglected in current post-fall care practices. We first checked for feasibility and tolerability of such interventions. We then applied a living lab participatory design approach, involving health care professionals and older adults, to build the Virtual Promenade prototype. We found that patients with PFS tolerated the system well and that there were no major obstacles to feasibility. We also report that the aesthetics of the virtual environment is an important motivational factor for older adults and discuss our results in searching for the most suitable game controller for this type of patients and game. Finally, we observed that the chairs' movements improved the immersion in the game

    Impact d'un Robot " Majordome " sur l'état psychoaffectif et cognitif de personnes âgées ayant des troubles cognitifs

    Les personnes âgées souffrant de troubles cognitifs ont besoin de services, en particulier d'aide sous forme d'entrainement cognitif et de facilitation des contacts sociaux, auxquelles les technologies de l'information et de la communication peuvent répondre. Les équipes (Broca, Valoria, ISIR, Robosoft) du projet TECSAN Robadom (financé par l'ANR) développent et testent auprès de personnes âgées souffrant de troubles cognitifs légers, un robot doté d'émotions et du langage, adapté aux difficultés de ces personnes, contrôlé par elles et qui pourrait contribuer à leur soutien au domicile en apportant différents services tels que des aides matérielles, des relais d'information, un soutien psychologique et cognitif. En début de projet, les scénarii de validations du robot et des spécifications techniques de l'interaction ont été réalisés. La deuxième phase comportait la conception du robot, le développement de la perception multimodale centrée sur l'utilisateur et du modèle émotionnel et cognitif d'interaction. La troisième phase est constituée des évaluations cliniques. Cette tâche permet d'étudier l'acceptabilité, l'utilisabilité et l'impact du robot dans la vie quotidienne (affectif, cognitif, qualité de vie...) et la manière dont le robot est perçu (compagnon, machine, intrus) par les utilisateurs, ainsi que les questions d'éthiques soulevées par le projet à travers une approche transversale prenant en compte aussi bien les dimensions normatives (lois, droits, etc.) que proactives (opinions des usagers)

    Impact of Head Motion on the Assistive Robot Expressiveness - Evaluation with Elderly Persons

    International audienceIn the near future, robots will support human to perform tasks in many domains (industrial, domestic, educational and health tasks).Such robot behaviors need to take into account the social interaction between robot and human.In this context, we focus on the expressiveness of a moving head for an assistive robot for the elderly.We designed a new moving head for the Kompaï companion robot.On one hand, this new head improves its perception capabilities.On the other hand, we expect to jointly increase its social skills and thus its acceptability.This new head is composed of a tablet to animate a virtual face according to 4 facial expressions and a mechanical neck with 4 degrees of freedom to enhance the robot's expression.Before improving face expressions and adding more complex head movements, it is essential to evaluate the combination of simple head movements with virtual face expressions.     Effect of agent embodiment on the elder user enjoyment of a game

    International audienceThis paper presents a study that compared the elder user enjoyment of a game of trivia in three conditions: participants playing the game with a laptop PC vs. a robot vs. a virtual agent. Statistical analysis did not show any significant difference of the three devices on user enjoyment while qualitative analysis revealed a preference for the laptop PC condition, followed by the robot and the virtual agent. The elderly participants were concentrated on the task performance rather on the interaction with systems. They preferred laptop PC condition mainly because there were less interfaces distracting them from performing the task proposed by the game. Further, the robot was preferred to a virtual agent because of its physical presence. Some issues of the experiment design are raised and directions for future research are suggested to gain more insight into the effects of agent embodiment on human-agent interaction

    Le projet Robadom : conception d'un robot d'assistance pour les personnes âgées

    National audienceContexte : Le projet ROBADOM a pour objectif de concevoir "un robot majordome", capable de fournirdes interactions verbales et non verbales et des feedbacks pour aider au quotidien les personnes âgées présentant des troubles cognitifs légers. Objectif : Le projet ROBADOM aborde les thématiques suivantes : 1. Le contexte social pour la conception de robots : 1) définir l'apparence du robot et 2) étudier les perceptions et les attitudes des personnes âgées à l'égard d'un robot d'assistance ; 2. Développer les comportements du robot pour créer une interaction "naturelle": 1) des solutions techniques pour un robot expressif, 2) la communication verbale et non verbale entre les personnes âgées et le robot ; 3. Etudier l'acceptabilité du robot chez les personnes âgées ; 4. Etudier l'impact du robot sur les utilisateurs âgés. Méthode : Les quatre études ont impliqué à la fois une méthode qualitative et une méthode expérimentale, réalisées au sein de notre laboratoire "LUSAGE". Résultats et conclusion : Les petits robots avec des traits stylisés ont été appréciés par les participants. Concernant les fonctionnalités, la stimulation cognitive, le rappel de tâches et la localisation d'objets ont été positivement évalués. Bien que les participants jugent le robot utile, ils n'étaient pas encore prêts à l'adopter. De plus, ils ont perçu certaines expressions du robot différemment des personnes jeunes. Ainsi, le système robotisé devra être adapté aux spécificités des personnes âgées. Enfin, nos participants ont soulevé la question de la valeur ajoutée d'un système robotisé par rapport à un ordinateur. Ainsi, de nombreux aspects (technologiques, interaction homme-robot, sociologiques...) restent à explorer avant d'évaluer l'impact du robot d'assistance au domicile

    Changes in cardiac proteome and metabolome following exposure to the PAHs retene and fluoranthene and their mixture in developing rainbow trout alevins

    Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is known to affect developing organisms. Utilization of different omics-based technologies and approaches could therefore provide a base for the discovery of novel mechanisms of PAH induced development of toxicity. To this aim, we investigated how exposure towards two PAHs with different toxicity mechanisms: retene (an aryl hydrocarbon receptor 2 (Ahr2) agonist), and fluoranthene (a weak Ahr2 agonist and cytochrome P450 inhibitor (Cyp1a)), either alone or as a mixture, affected the cardiac proteome and metabolome in newly hatched rainbow trout alevins (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In total, we identified 65 and 82 differently expressed proteins (DEPs) across all treatments compared to control (DMSO) after 7 and 14 days of exposure. Exposure to fluoranthene altered the expression of 11 and 19 proteins, retene 29 and 23, while the mixture affected 44 and 82 DEPs by Days 7 and 14, respectively. In contrast, only 5 significantly affected metabolites were identified. Pathway over-representation analysis identified exposure-specific activation of phase II metabolic processes, which were accompanied with exposure-specific body burden profiles. The proteomic data highlights that exposure to the mixture increased oxidative stress, altered iron metabolism and impaired coagulation capacity. Additionally, depletion of several mini-chromosome maintenance components, in combination with depletion of several intermediate filaments and microtubules, among alevins exposed to the mixture, suggests compromised cellular integrity and reduced rate of mitosis, whereby affecting heart growth and development. Furthermore, the combination of proteomic and metabolomic data indicates altered energy metabolism, as per amino acid catabolism among mixture exposed alevins; plausibly compensatory mechanisms as to counteract reduced absorption and consumption of yolk. When considered as a whole, proteomic and metabolomic data, in relation to apical effects on the whole organism, provides additional insight into PAH toxicity and the effects of exposure on heart structure and molecular processes.</p

    Relationships between Personality Traits, Medial Temporal Lobe Atrophy, and White Matter Lesion in Subjects Suffering from Mild Cognitive Impairment

    Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous cognitive status that can be a prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is particularly relevant to focus on prodromal stages of AD such as MCI, because patho-physiological abnormalities of AD start years before the dementia stage. Medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy resulting from AD lesions and cerebrovascular lesions [i.e., white matter lesions (WML), lacunar strokes, and strokes] are often revealed concurrently on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in MCI subjects. Personality changes have been reported to be associated with MCI status and early AD. More specifically, an increase in neuroticism and a decrease in conscientiousness have been reported, suggesting that higher and lower scores, respectively, in neuroticism and conscientiousness are associated with an increased risk of developing the disease. However, personality changes have not been studied concomitantly with pathological structural brain alterations detected on MRI in patients suffering from MCI. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to assess the relationship between MTL atrophy, WML, lacunar strokes, and personality traits in such patients. The severity of WML was strongly associated with lower levels of conscientiousness and higher levels of neuroticism. Conversely, no association was detected between personality traits and the presence of lacunar strokes or MTL atrophy. Altogether, these results strongly suggest that personality changes occurring in a MCI population, at high risk of AD, are associated with WML, which can induce executive dysfunctions, rather than with MTL atrophy

    Gliomatosis cerebri presenting as rapidly progressive dementia and parkinsonism in an elderly woman: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Dementia is one of the most important neurological disorders in the elderly. Dementia of tumoral origin is rare and parkinsonism of neoplastic origin is unusual. We herein report a case of gliomatosis cerebri, a very rare brain tumor seldom affecting the elderly, which presented as rapidly progressive dementia and parkinsonism.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>An 82-year-old woman very rapidly developed progressive dementia and akineto-rigid parkinsonism. Brain CT scan was normal. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadolinium injection highlighted a diffuse tumor-related infiltration involving both lobes, the putamen, the pallidum, the substantia nigra, and the brainstem, corresponding to the specific description and definition of gliomatosis cerebri.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This atypical presentation of a gliomatosis cerebri, and the infiltration of the substantia nigra by the tumor, merits attention.</p
