Lift-up, Kelvin-Helmholtz and Orr mechanisms in turbulent jets
Three amplification mechanisms present in turbulent jets, namely lift-up, Kelvin–Helmholtz and Orr, are characterized via global resolvent analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) over a range of Mach numbers. The lift-up mechanism was recently identified in turbulent jets via local analysis by Nogueira et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 873, 2019, pp. 211–237) at low Strouhal number ( St ) and non-zero azimuthal wavenumbers ( m ). In these limits, a global SPOD analysis of data from high-fidelity simulations reveals streamwise vortices and streaks similar to those found in turbulent wall-bounded flows. These structures are in qualitative agreement with the global resolvent analysis, which shows that they are a response to upstream forcing of streamwise vorticity near the nozzle exit. Analysis of mode shapes, component-wise amplitudes and sensitivity analysis distinguishes the three mechanisms and the regions of frequency–wavenumber space where each dominates, finding lift-up to be dominant as St/m→0 . Finally, SPOD and resolvent analyses of localized regions show that the lift-up mechanism is present throughout the jet, with a dominant azimuthal wavenumber inversely proportional to streamwise distance from the nozzle, with streaks of azimuthal wavenumber exceeding five near the nozzle, and wavenumbers one and two most energetic far downstream of the potential core
Geometrical characteristics of magnetospheric energetic ion time series: evidence for low dimensional chaos
International audienceIn the first part of the paper we study the geometrical characteristics of the magnetospheric ions' time series in the reconstructed phase space by using the SVD extended chaotic analysis, and we test the strong null hypothesis supposing that the ions' time series is caused by a linear stochastic process perturbed by a static nonlinear distortion. The SVD reconstructed spectrum of the ions' signal reveals a strong component of high dimensional, external coloured noise, as well as an internal low dimensional nonlinear deterministic component. Also, the stochastic Lorenz system produced by coloured noise perturbation of the deterministic Lorenz system was used as an archetype model in comparison with the dynamics of the magnetrospheric ions

The role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces: survey results and implications for user interfaces
This paper explores the role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces. A survey consisting of 118 respondents was contacted to address the questions relating to online shopping and brand loyalty. Link between the frequency of access and time spent on an e-commerce user interface, and brand loyalty, gender and age profile differences, and the role of social media to branding and on-line shopping was analyzed. It was found that online loyalty differs from offline loyalty and loyalty also differed across genders, showing men were more loyal than women when shopping online. Information shared about products on social media by friends and family played an important role in purchase decision making. Website interface and ease of navigation were also key aspects for online shopping. The research concluded with recommendations to create multimodal websites which are more interactive and targeted so customer experience is enhanced and loyalty is achieved through the use of interactivity and social media
Improvement of continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems by using optical preamplifiers
Continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols, based on Gaussian
modulation of the quadratures of coherent states, have been implemented in
recent experiments. A present limitation of such systems is the finite
efficiency of the detectors, which can in principle be compensated for by the
use of classical optical preamplifiers. Here we study this possibility in
detail, by deriving the modified secret key generation rates when an optical
parametric amplifier is placed at the output of the quantum channel. After
presenting a general set of security proofs, we show that the use of
preamplifiers does compensate for all the imperfections of the detectors when
the amplifier is optimal in terms of gain and noise. Imperfect amplifiers can
also enhance the system performance, under conditions which are generally
satisfied in practice.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J. Phys. B (special issue on Few

First International Workshop on Grid Simulator Testing of Wind Turbine Drivetrains: Workshop Proceedings
This report summarizes the proceedings of the First International Workshop on Grid Simulator Testing of Wind Turbine Drivetrains, held from June 13 to 14, 2013, at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's National Wind Technology Center, located south of Boulder, Colorado. The workshop was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and cohosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Clemson University under ongoing collaboration via a cooperative research and development agreement. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum to discuss the research, testing needs, and state-of-the-art apparatuses involved in grid compliance testing of utility-scale wind turbine generators. This includes both dynamometer testing of wind turbine drivetrains ('ground testing') and field testing grid-connected wind turbines. Four sessions followed by discussions in which all attendees of the workshop were encouraged to participate comprised the workshop
Avalanche Photo-Detection for High Data Rate Applications
Avalanche photo detection is commonly used in applications which require
single photon sensitivity. We examine the limits of using avalanche photo
diodes (APD) for characterising photon statistics at high data rates. To
identify the regime of linear APD operation we employ a ps-pulsed diode laser
with variable repetition rates between 0.5MHz and 80MHz. We modify the mean
optical power of the coherent pulses by applying different levels of
well-calibrated attenuation. The linearity at high repetition rates is limited
by the APD dead time and a non-linear response arises at higher photon-numbers
due to multiphoton events. Assuming Poissonian input light statistics we
ascertain the effective mean photon-number of the incident light with high
accuracy. Time multiplexed detectors (TMD) allow to accomplish photon- number
resolution by photon chopping. This detection setup extends the linear response
function to higher photon-numbers and statistical methods may be used to
compensate for non-linearity. We investigated this effect, compare it to the
single APD case and show the validity of the convolution treatment in the TMD
data analysis.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
