Prediction of the Heartwood Content of Pine Logs
The heartwood content of pine is discussed in terms of age, size, and shape of the log. The physical properties of heartwood and sapwood were analyzed. An exact formula was developed for the volume proportion of heartwood as a function of mass density of the log. A formula for the area proportion of heartwood within a cross section at the upper end of a log as a function of the volume proportion of heartwood within the log is given. The two formulae are combined to a predictive model of the heartwood content within a pine log
Influence of substrate bias on the structural and dielectrical properties of magnetron-sputtered BaxSr1-xTiO3 thin films
The application of a substrate bias during rf magnetron sputtering alters the
crystalline structure, grain morphology, lattice strain and composition of
BaxSr1-xTiO3 thin films. As a result, the dielectric properties of
Pt/BaxSr1-xTiO3/Pt parallel-plate capacitors change significantly. With
increasing substrate bias we observe a clear shift of the ferroelectric to
paraelectric phase transition towards higher temperature, an increase of the
dielectric permittivity and tunability at room temperature, and a deterioration
of the dielectric loss. To a large extent these changes correlate to a gradual
increase of the tensile in-plane film strain with substrate bias and an abrupt
change in film composition.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Ferroelectric
Scopolamine Administration Modulates Muscarinic, Nicotinic and NMDA Receptor Systems
Studies on the effect of scopolamine on memory are abundant but so far only regulation of the muscarinic receptor (M1) has been reported. We hypothesized that levels of other cholinergic brain receptors as the nicotinic receptors and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, known to be involved in memory formation, would be modified by scopolamine administration
Effects of methylphenidate on attention in Wistar rats treated with the neurotoxin N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP4)
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the neurotoxin N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP4) on attention in rats as measured using the 5-choice-serial-reaction-time task (5CSRTT) and to investigate whether methylphenidate has effects on DSP4-treated rats. Methylphenidate is a noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor and commonly used in the pharmacological treatment of individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Wistar rats were trained in the 5CSRTT and treated with one of three doses of DSP4 or saline. Following the DSP4 treatment rats were injected with three doses of methylphenidate or saline and again tested in the 5CSRTT. The treatment with DSP4 caused a significant decline of performance in the number of correct responses and a decrease in response accuracy. A reduction in activity could also be observed. Whether or not the cognitive impairments are due to attention deficits or changes in explorative behaviour or activity remains to be investigated. The treatment with methylphenidate had no beneficial effect on the rats’ performance regardless of the DSP4 treatment. In the group without DSP4 treatment, methylphenidate led to a reduction in response accuracy and bidirectional effects in regard to parameters related to attention. These findings support the role of noradrenaline in modulating attention and call for further investigations concerning the effects of methylphenidate on attentional processes in rats

Kandidaatintutkielma
Musiikkialaa koettelee laajamittainen ja radikaali muutos. Levymyynnin lasku
on ollut pitkään maailmanlaajuinen trendi, mutta toisaalta samaan aikaan
musiikin digitaalinen jakelu on kasvanut nopeasti. Eräs tämän alan
tärkeimmistä suuntauksista on ollut digitaalisten käyttöoikeuksien hallinnan
(digital rights management, DRM) järjestelmien ja sovellusten käytöstä
luopuminen. DRMjärjestelmiä
on pidetty musiikkialan tärkeimpänä aseena
musiikin laitonta lataamista vastaa, joten kaupallisen musiikin tulevaisuus
vaikuttaa olevan epävarmuuden verhoama.
Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, onko DRM:llä enää sijaa muutosten
kourissa olevalla musiikkialalla, ja miten DRMvapaa
musiikki on muuttanut ja
muuttaa alaa. Tutkielmassa pyrittiin myös kartoittamaan DRM:n jälkeisen ajan
liiketoimintamalleja ja löytämään huomionarvoisia jatkotutkimusaiheita.
Tutkimuskirjallisuudesta saatujen havaintojen perusteella päädyttiin
toteamaan, että muuttunut markkinatilanne, jossa tuottajien on opittava
vastaamaan kuluttajien odotuksiin, ei anna juuri mahdollisuuksia DRMsuojatulle
musiikille. Toisaalta saatiin vahvoja viitteitä myös siitä, että pelot
DRMvapaan
