Research and Development of Computer Software to Create Story Problems to Promote the Children’s Individual Development (VIII)
In this research project, we developed computer software to allow a pupil to operate sentences of arithmetic word problems, numerical expressions, and whole-part relations. We then and designed a curriculum to promote student comprehension of the structure of arithmetic word problems by using this software. We conducted practical teaching following the curriculum and based on the software for one second-grade class and two third-grade classes, with 10 class sessions in total. Through the practical use, we have confirmed that the software and curriculum were useful to promote student comprehension of the structure of arithmetic word problems by measuring their problem-posing performance
Estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from Japanese healthy meals with different protein sources
IntroductionDiets that promote people’s health and environment-friendly are essential for achieving a sustainable society. Protein sources are the main contributors of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), and lower intakes of livestock meat and more intakes of poultry meat and legumes are recommended. Although Japanese consume less meat than other countries, it is unclear whether the GHGE of healthy Japanese meals is sufficient to solve climate change. In addition, most previous studies have focused on general household meals, not necessarily healthy meals. Therefore, we explored recommended food choices of protein sources in both healthy and environment-friendly meals.MethodsWe used data on healthy meals provided by retailers certified under the “Healthy Meal and Food Environment” Certification System. We first examined the number of main ingredients in the staple, main, and side dishes. We then compared the GHGE of meals with different combinations of main ingredients of main dishes (protein sources). To estimate the GHGE, we developed a database of GHGE per food weight for each food in the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan.ResultsData on a total of 509 meals were considered in the analysis. The mean ± standard deviation of the total GHGE of one meal was 1044.7 ± 614.9 g-CO2 eq/650 kcal. The minimum and maximum values were 412.5 and 4268.5 g-CO2 eq/650 kcal, respectively. Regarding meat, chicken was more likely to be used in meals with low GHGE.DiscussionThe healthy meals with the lowest GHGE in this study had the potential to contribute to solving climate change. Although healthy meals in this study were created with the same nutrient level criteria, a large difference existed between the minimum and maximum GHGE and it depends on the choice of protein ingredients. The findings may be useful to develop food guide for Japanese taking environmental perspectives into account
Intestinal Tuberculosis with Hoarseness as a Chief Complaint due to Mediastinal Lymphadenitis
A 68-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of hoarseness. A chest X-ray detected an abnormal shadow on the upper right lung. Bronchoscopic examination revealed that the left vocal cord was fixed in the paramedian position, and therefore left recurrent nerve paralysis was suspected. Lymphadenopathy was found in the left supraclavicular area. Chest computed tomography showed that the pretracheal and subaortic lymph nodes were swollen. Gastroendoscopy showed a 2-cm protruding lesion with ulceration on the upper esophagus. Histological examination of the supraclavicular lymph nodes and biopsy specimens from the esophagus revealed non-specific inflammation. PET-CT showed abnormal accumulations not only on the upper right lung but also on the lower right of the abdomen. Colonoscopy was performed and multiple erosions on the terminal ileum were found. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of a specimen biopsied from the erosion of the terminal ileum was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and intestinal tuberculosis was diagnosed. The patient was then treated with anti-tuberculous therapy. After treatment, the erosions on the terminal ileum, the swelling of the mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and the esophageal ulcer were all improved. The hoarseness was subsequently relieved. This is the first report of intestinal tuberculosis with hoarseness as a chief complaint due to mediastinal lymphadenitis

生後早期の心理的ストレスが雌雄ラットの性成熟、性行動に与える影響
Purpose: We studied the influence of psychological stress during the early neonatal period on sexual maturation and sexual behavior in rats.
Methods: Neonatal male and female rats were divided into control (C) and maternal separation (MS) groups (n = 20‐24 per group). The pups in the MS groups were placed in isolation cages for 240 minutes/d from postnatal days 2‐11. Vaginal opening (VO) in females and preputial separation (PS) in males (indicators of sexual maturation) were monitored, as was the estrous cycle in females. Thereafter, sexual behavior was monitored twice at 13 and 15 weeks of age.
Results: As for sexual maturation, the onset of PS occurred significantly earlier in the MS group than in the C group, whereas the onset of VO did not differ between the groups. The length of the estrous cycle did not differ between the groups. The frequencies of sexual behaviors did not differ between the groups in either sex.
Conclusions: In conclusion, early‐life psychological stress induced by MS advanced sexual maturation in male rats, whereas it did not affect sexual maturation in female rats. On the other hand, early‐life psychological stress might not affect sexual behavior in adulthood in either sex
Stimulation of Nerve Growth Factor Synthesis/Secretion by 1,4-Benzoquinone and Its Derivatives in Cultured Mouse Astroglial Cells
AbstractPreviously we reported that astroglial cells cultured from mouse brain synthesize and secrete nerve growth factor (NGF) and that, in quiescent cells, catecholamines markedly increase the NGF content in the conditioned medium (CM). We wished to further assess the structural properties required for exhibition of such effect of compounds containing a ring structure analogous to that of catechol on astroglial NGF synthesis. During our study, we found that hydroquinone, which was confirmed not to stimulate NGF synthesis in mouse flbroblast cells in another of our investigations, is a potent stimulator of NGF synthesis in astroglial cells and that 1,4-benzoquinone, an oxidized form of hydroquinone, is a more effective stimulator than hydroquinone itself. In addition, the results of experiments with 1,2-benzoquinone derivatives indicated that the presence of a long aliphatic side chain in the molecule eliminates the stimulatory effect of 1,4-benzoquinone on NGF synthesis in astroglial cells
A novel PCOS rat model and an evaluation of its reproductive, metabolic, and behavioral phenotypes
Background: Although animal models of PCOS have been used in many studies, none of them can reproduce both the reproductive and metabolic phenotypes of PCOS. In addition, behavioral parameters have not been evaluated in PCOS animal models.
Purpose: We tried to produce an improved rat model of PCOS, and the reproductive, metabolic, and behavioral phenotypes of the model rats were evaluated.
Methods: Female rats were implanted with silicon tubes containing oil-dissolved dihydrotestosterone (Oil-DHT) as a new PCOS model. Their phenotypes were compared with those of conventional PCOS model rats (DHT), into which tubes containing crystalline DHT were implanted, and non-DHT-treated rats (control).
Results: Both the Oil-DHT and DHT rats showed greater body weight gain, food intake, and fat depot weight than the control rats. Furthermore, these groups showed fewer estrous stages and increased numbers of cystic follicles. The DHT rats exhibited lower ovarian and uterine weights than the control rats, whereas no such changes were observed in the Oil-DHT rats. The Oil-DHT and DHT rats showed less locomotor activity in the light phase than the control rats.
Conclusions: Our proposed PCOS model reproduced both the reproductive and metabolic phenotypes of PCOS and may have potential for PCOS research
Functional shoulder radiography with use of a dynamic flat panel detector
Our purpose in this study was to develop a functional form of radiography and to perform a quantitative analysis for the shoulder joint using a dynamic flat panel detector (FPD) system. We obtained dynamic images at a rate of 3.75 frames per second (fps) using an FPD system. Three patients and 5 healthy controls were studied with a clinically established frontal projection, with abduction of the arms. The arm angle, glenohumeral angle (G-angle), and scapulothoracic angle (S-angle) were measured on dynamic images. The ratio of the G-angle to the S-angle (GSR) was also evaluated quantitatively. In normal subjects, the G-angle and S-angle changed gradually along with the arm angle. The G-angle was approximately twice as large as the S-angle, resulting in a GSR of 2 throughout the abduction of the shoulder. Changes in G-angle and S-angle tended to be irregular in patients with shoulder disorders. The GSR of the thoracic outlet syndrome, recurrent dislocation of the shoulder joint, and anterior serratus muscle paralysis were 3-7.5, 4-9.5, and 3.5-7.5, respectively. The GSR of the anterior serratus muscle paralysis improved to approximately 2 after orthopedic treatment. Our preliminary results indicated that functional radiography by FPD and computer-aided quantitative analysis is useful for diagnosis of some shoulder disorders, such as the thoracic outlet syndrome, recurrent dislocation of the shoulder joint, and anterior serratus muscle paralysis. The technique and procedures described comprise a simple, functional shoulder radiographic method for evaluation of the therapeutic effects of surgery and/or rehabilitation. © 2014 The Author(s)
