    We assessed the effects of ascorbic acid and total vitamin deficiencies on growth, food processing efficiencies and survival of larval gypsy moths. Artificial diet lacking ascorbic acid did not alter performance of fourth instars, whereas diet lacking a total vitamin mix margmally reduced growth. All vita- min deficient diets substantially reduced survival of fourth-fifth instars. Mortality occurred primarily during molting periods. providing further evidence of the putative role of ascorbic acid in cuticle formation

    (excerpt) Until recently, little was known about life cycles of stoneflies in the Great Lakes region. Frison (1935) and Harden and Mickel (1952) reported dates of collections of adult stoneflies in,Illinois and Minnesota respectively, and thus suggested emergence patterns for midwestern species. But, as Harper and Pilon (1970) point out, the duration of the emergence period cannot be determined solely from adult collection records because of the relatively long life-span of adults. Recent studies in Quebec (Harper and Magniri 1969, Harper and Pilon 1970) and Ontario (Harper and Hynes 1972, Harper 1973a, 1973b) have added significantly to our knowledge of the life cycles and ecology of eastern Nearctic stoneflies

    Density Functional Calculations On First-Row Transition Metals

    The excitation energies and ionization potentials of the atoms in the first transition series are notoriously difficult to compute accurately. Errors in calculated excitation energies can range from 1--4 eV at the Hartree-Fock level, and errors as high as 1.5eV are encountered for ionization energies. In the current work we present and discuss the results of a systematic study of the first transition series using a spin-restricted Kohn-Sham density-functional method with the gradient-corrected functionals of Becke and Lee, Yang and Parr. Ionization energies are observed to be in good agreement with experiment, with a mean absolute error of approximately 0.15eV; these results are comparable to the most accurate calculations to date, the Quadratic Configuration Interaction (QCISD(T)) calculations of Raghavachari and Trucks. Excitation energies are calculated with a mean error of approximately 0.5eV, compared with \sim 1\mbox{eV} for the local density approximation and 0.1eV for QCISD(T). These gradient-corrected functionals appear to offer an attractive compromise between accuracy and computational effort.Comment: Journal of Chemical Physics, 29, LA-UR-93-425

    On a generalization of Lie(kk): a CataLAnKe theorem

    We define a generalization of the free Lie algebra based on an nn-ary commutator and call it the free LAnKe. We show that the action of the symmetric group S2n1S_{2n-1} on the multilinear component with 2n12n-1 generators is given by the representation S2n11S^{2^{n-1}1}, whose dimension is the nnth Catalan number. An application involving Specht modules of staircase shape is presented. We also introduce a conjecture that extends the relation between the Whitehouse representation and Lie(kk).Comment: 14 page

    Hybridization, Inter-Ion Correlation, and Surface States in the Kondo Insulator SmB6

    As an exemplary Kondo insulator, SmB6 has been studied for several decades; however, direct evidence for the development of the Kondo coherent state and the evolution of the electronic structure in the material has not been obtained due to the rather complicated electronic and thermal transport behavior. Recently, these open questions attracted increasing attention as the emergence of a time-reversal invariant topological surface state in the Kondo insulator has been suggested. Here, we use point-contact spectroscopy to reveal the temperature dependence of the electronic states in SmB6. We demonstrate that SmB6 is a model Kondo insulator: below 100 K, the conductance spectra reflect the Kondo hybridization of Sm ions, but below ~ 30 K, signatures of inter-ion correlation effects clearly emerge. Moreover, we find evidence that the low-temperature insulating state of this exemplary Kondo lattice compound harbors conduction states on the surface, in support of predictions of nontrivial topology in Kondo insulators.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Development of a tailored, telehealth intervention to address chronic pain and heavy drinking among people with HIV infection: integrating perspectives of patients in HIV care.

    BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and heavy drinking commonly co-occur and can infuence the course of HIV. There have been no interventions designed to address both of these conditions among people living with HIV (PLWH), and none that have used telehealth methods. The purpose of this study was to better understand pain symptoms, patterns of alcohol use, treatment experiences, and technology use among PLWH in order to tailor a telehealth intervention that addresses these conditions SUBJECTS: Ten participants with moderate or greater chronic pain and heavy drinking were recruited from a cohort of patients engaged in HIV-care (Boston Alcohol Research Collaborative on HIV/AIDS Cohort) and from an integrated HIV/primary care clinic at a large urban hospital. METHODS: One-on-one interviews were conducted with participants to understand experiences and treatment of HIV, chronic pain, and alcohol use. Participants’ perceptions of the infuence of alcohol on HIV and chronic pain were explored as was motivation to change drinking. Technology use and treatment preferences were examined in the fnal section of the interview. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and uploaded into NVivo® v12 software for analysis. A codebook was developed based on interviews followed by thematic analysis in which specifc meanings were assigned to codes. RESULTS: A number of themes were identifed that had implications for intervention tailoring including: resilience in coping with HIV; autonomy in health care decision-making; coping with pain, stress, and emotion; understanding treatment rationale; depression and social withdrawal; motives to drink and refrain from drinking; technology use and capacity; and preference for intervention structure and style. Ratings of intervention components indicated that participants viewed each of the proposed intervention content areas as “helpful” to “very helpful”. Videoconferencing was viewed as an acceptable modality for intervention delivery CONCLUSIONS: Results helped specify treatment targets and provided information about how to enhance intervention delivery.     Temperature coefficients and radiation induced DLTS spectra of MOCVD grown n(+)p InP solar cells

    The effects of temperature and radiation on n(+)p InP solar cells and mesa diodes grown by metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were studied. It was shown that MOCVD is capable of consistently producing good quality InP solar cells with Eff greater than 19 percent which display excellent radiation resistance due to minority carrier injection and thermal annealing. It was also shown that universal predictions of InP device performance based on measurements of a small group of test samples can be expected to be quite accurate, and that the degradation of an InP device due to any incident particle spectrum should be predictable from a measurement following a single low energy proton irradiation
