The new radiation-hard optical links for the ATLAS pixel detector
The ATLAS detector is currently being upgraded with a new layer of pixel
based charged particle tracking and a new arrangement of the services for the
pixel detector. These upgrades require the replacement of the opto-boards
previously used by the pixel detector. In this report we give details on the

Decidability of quantified propositional intuitionistic logic and S4 on trees
Quantified propositional intuitionistic logic is obtained from propositional
intuitionistic logic by adding quantifiers \forall p, \exists p over
propositions. In the context of Kripke semantics, a proposition is a subset of
the worlds in a model structure which is upward closed. Kremer (1997) has shown
that the quantified propositional intuitionistic logic H\pi+ based on the class
of all partial orders is recursively isomorphic to full second-order logic. He
raised the question of whether the logic resulting from restriction to trees is
axiomatizable. It is shown that it is, in fact, decidable. The methods used can
also be used to establish the decidability of modal S4 with propositional

A chromomagnetic mechanism for the X(3872) resonance
The chromomagnetic interaction, with proper account for flavour-symmetry
breaking, is shown to explain the mass and coupling properties of the X(3872)
resonance as a = 1 state consisting of a heavy quark-antiquark
pair and a light one. It is crucial to introduce all the spin-colour
configurations compatible with these quantum numbers and diagonalise the
chromomagnetic interaction in this basis. This approach thus differs from the

Planar spin exchange in LiNiO_2
We study the planar spin exchange couplings in LiNiO2 using a perturbative
approach. We show that the inclusion of the trigonal crystal field splitting at
the Oxygen sites leads to the appearance of antiferromagnetic exchange
integrals in deviation from the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules for this 90
degree bond. That gives a microscopic foundation for the recently observed
coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in the
orbitally-frustrated state of LiNiO2. (F. Reynaud et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86,

Decoherence suppression via environment preparation
To protect a quantum system from decoherence due to interaction with its
environment, we investigate the existence of initial states of the environment
allowing for decoherence-free evolution of the system. For models in which a
two-state system interacts with a dynamical environment, we prove that such
states exist if and only if the interaction and self-evolution Hamiltonians
share an eigenstate. If decoherence by state preparation is not possible, we
show that initial states minimizing decoherence result from a delicate
compromise between the environment and interaction dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Chandra X-ray Observatory Arcsecond Imaging of the Young, Oxygen-rich Supernova Remnant 1E0102.2-7219
We present observations of the young, Oxygen-rich supernova remnant
1E0102.2-7219 taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory during Chandra's Orbital
Activation and Checkout phase. The boundary of the blast wave shock is clearly
seen for the first time, allowing the diameter of the remnant and the mean
blast wave velocity to be determined accurately. The prominent X-ray bright
ring of material may be the result of the reverse shock encountering ejecta;
the radial variation of O VII vs. O VIII emission indicates an ionizing shock
propagating inwards, possibly through a strong density gradient in the ejecta.
We compare the X-ray emission to Australia Telescope Compact Array 6 cm radio
observations (Amy and Ball) and to archival Hubble Space Telescope [O III]
observations. The ring of radio emission is predominantly inward of the outer
blast wave, consistent with an interpretation as synchrotron radiation
originating behind the blast wave, but outward of the bright X-ray ring of
emission. Many (but not all) of the prominent optical filaments are seen to
correspond to X-ray bright regions. We obtain an upper limit of ~9e33 erg/s (3

Mean Field Theory of the Localization Transition
A mean field theory of the localization transition for bosonic systems is
developed. Localization is shown to be sensitive to the distribution of the
random site energies. It occurs in the presence of a triangular distribution,
but not a uniform one. The inverse participation ratio, the single site Green's
function, the superfluid order parameter and the corresponding susceptibility
are calculated, and the appropriate exponents determined. All of these
quantities indicate the presence of a new phase, which can be identified as the

The cytoplasm of living cells: A functional mixture of thousands of components
Inside every living cell is the cytoplasm: a fluid mixture of thousands of
different macromolecules, predominantly proteins. This mixture is where most of
the biochemistry occurs that enables living cells to function, and it is
perhaps the most complex liquid on earth. Here we take an inventory of what is
actually in this mixture. Recent genome-sequencing work has given us for the
first time at least some information on all of these thousands of components.
Having done so we consider two physical phenomena in the cytoplasm: diffusion
and possible phase separation. Diffusion is slower in the highly crowded
cytoplasm than in dilute solution. Reasonable estimates of this slowdown can be
obtained and their consequences explored, for example, monomer-dimer equilibria
are established approximately twenty times slower than in a dilute solution.
Phase separation in all except exceptional cells appears not to be a problem,
despite the high density and so strong protein-protein interactions present. We
suggest that this may be partially a byproduct of the evolution of other
properties, and partially a result of the huge number of components present.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 1 tabl
Lowest Open Channels, Bound States, and Narrow Resonances of Dipositronium
The constraints imposed by symmetry on the open channels of dipositronium has
been studied, and the symmetry-adapted lowest open channel of each quantum
state has been identified. Based on this study, the existence of two more 0^+
bound states has been theoretically confirmed, and a 0^+ narrow resonance has
been predicted. A variational calculation has been performed to evaluate the
critical strength of the repulsive interaction . Two 0^- states are found to
have their critical strengths very close to 1, they are considered as
candidates of new narrow resonances or loosely bound states .Comment: 10 pages, 0 figure
Nimbus 7 solar backscatter ultraviolet (SBUV) ozone products user's guide
Three ozone tape products from the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) experiment aboard Nimbus 7 were archived at the National Space Science Data Center. The experiment measures the fraction of incoming radiation backscattered by the Earth's atmosphere at 12 wavelengths. In-flight measurements were used to monitor changes in the instrument sensitivity. Total column ozone is derived by comparing the measurements with calculations of what would be measured for different total ozone amounts. The altitude distribution is retrieved using an optimum statistical technique for the inversion. The estimated initial error in the absolute scale for total ozone is 2 percent, with a 3 percent drift over 8 years. The profile error depends on latitude and height, smallest at 3 to 10 mbar; the drift increases with increasing altitude. Three tape products are described. The High Density SBUV (HDSBUV) tape contains the final derived products - the total ozone and the vertical ozone profile - as well as much detailed diagnostic information generated during the retrieval process. The Compressed Ozone (CPOZ) tape contains only that subset of HDSBUV information, including total ozone and ozone profiles, considered most useful for scientific studies. The Zonal Means Tape (ZMT) contains daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly averages of the derived quantities over 10 deg latitude zones
