    Truth is Stranger Than It Used to Be: Biblical Faith in a Postmodern Age

The carnivalesque, pluralistic culture in which we live can be seen as a consequence of the breakdown of modernity (which touted itself as the "greatest show on earth"), combined with a recognition of the socially constructed character of reality. Since the old construction has been discredited and is in a process of decomposition, the season is open on the construction of new realities which are produced with the speed and ease of temporary circus tents being raised. Far from witnessing the erosion or even eclipse of religious belief that the Enlightenment so confidently predicted, the eclipse of the Enlightenment has resulted in a veritable smorgasbord of religions and worldviews for our consumption. So Richard Middleton and Brian Walsh colorfully describe our postmodern setting. In this book they survey postmodern culture and philosophy, offering lucid explanations of such difficult theories as deconstruction. They are sympathetic to the postmodern critique, yet believe that a gospel stripped of its modernist trappings speaks a radical word of hope and transformation to our chaotic culture.     Extension rates across the northern Shanxi Grabens, China, from Quaternary geology, seismicity and geodesy

    Discrepancies between geological, seismic and geodetic rates of strain can indicate that rates of crustal deformation, and hence seismic hazard, are varying through time. Previous studies in the northern Shanxi Grabens, at the northeastern corner of the Ordos Plateau in northern China, have found extension rates of anywhere between 0 and 6 mm a−1 at an azimuth of between 95° and 180°. In this paper we determine extension rates across the northern Shanxi Grabens from offset geomorphological features and a variety of Quaternary dating techniques (including new IRSL and Ar-Ar ages), a Kostrov summation using a 700 yr catalogue of historical earthquakes, and recent campaign GPS measurements. We observe good agreement between Quaternary, seismic and geodetic rates of strain, and we find that the northern Shanxi Grabens are extending at around 1–2 mm a−1 at an azimuth of ≈151°. The azimuth of extension is particularly well constrained and can be reliably inferred from catalogues of small earthquakes. We do not find evidence for any substantial variations in extension rate through time, though there is a notable seismic moment rate deficit since 1750. This deficit could indicate complex fault interactions across large regions, aseismic accommodation of deformation, or that we are quite late in the earthquake cycle with the potential for larger earthquakes in the relatively near future

    A cross‐faculty simulation model for authentic learning

    This paper proposes a cross‐faculty simulation model for authentic learning that bridges the gap between short group‐based simulations within the classroom and longer individual placements in professional working contexts. Dissemination of the model is expected to widen the use of authentic learning approaches in higher education (HE). The model is based on a cross‐faculty project in which UK HE students acted as professional developers to produce prototype educational games for academic clients from other subject areas. Perceptions about the project were obtained from interviews with project participants. The stakeholders believed the cross‐faculty simulation to be a motivating learning experience, whilst identifying possible improvements. To evaluate whether the authenticity of the student–client relationship could be improved, the interview data were compared to four themes for authentic learning described by Rule in 2006. The data supported Rule’s themes, whilst highlighting the added value gained from meta‐awareness of the simulation as a learning opportunity

    Positive Feedback in the AKT/mTOR pathway and its implications for growth signal progression in skeletal muscle cells: An analytical study

    The IGF-1 mediated AKT/mTOR pathway has been recently proposed as mediator of skeletal muscle growth and a positive feedback between Akt and mTOR was suggested to induce homogenous growth signals along the whole spatial extension of such long cells. Here we develop two biologically justied approximations which we study under the presence of four dierent initial conditions that describe dierent paradigms of IGF-1 receptor{induced Akt/mTOR activation. In rst scenario the activation of the feedback cascade was assumed to be mild or protein turnover considered to be high. In turn, in the second scenario the transcriptional regulation was assumed to maintain dened levels of inactive pro{enzymes. For both scenarios, we were able to obtain closed{form formulas for growth signal progression in time and space and found that a localised initial signal maintains its Gaussian shape, but gets delocalised and exponentially degraded. Importantly, mathematical treatment of the reaction diusion system revealed that diusion ltered out high frequencies of spatially periodic initiator signals suggesting that the muscle cell is robust against uctuations in spatial receptor expression or activation. However, neither scenario was consistent with the presence of stably travelling signal waves. Our study highlights the role of feedback loops in spatiotemporal signal progression and results can be applied to studies in cell proliferation, cell dierentiation and cell death in other spatially extended cells

    Biogeographic history of the pantropical family Gesneriaceae with a focus on the Indian plate and diversification through the Old World

    The Gesneriaceae consists of around 150 genera and c. 3750 species with a predominantly tropical and subtropical distribution across all continents. Although previous studies have proposed an American origin of Gesneriaceae, the biogeographic history of this pantropical plant family is still unclear, particularly in the Old World. To address this, we assembled the most comprehensively sampled matrix of Gesneriaceae with 143 Gesneriaceae genera and 355 species, including key samples from Sri Lanka analysed here for the first time. We generated molecular phylogenies based on four plastid gene regions (ndhF, matK, rps16 and trnL-F), obtained fossil-calibrated trees, and reconstructed ancestral areas and dispersal routes using Bayesian methods. Our results confirm the origin for the family in the Early Palaeocene (67. Ma) in the region of present-day Central America & Andean South America, and that diversity in the Old World originated from a long-distance dispersal event from South America around 59 Ma, most likely to the Indian plate, which was an island at the time. This lineage then dispersed to Malesia and later East Asia, which would ultimately become a major centre of diversity and source of many dispersals to other regions. Our results thus highlight the Indian plate as a likely key player in the early diversification of Old World Gesneriaceae, even though it is now more diverse elsewhere, and hence offer novel insights into this plant family’s dispersal routes and areas of diversification in the Old World

    A phase 1 study of intravenous and oral rucaparib in combination with chemotherapy in patients with advanced solid tumors.

    Background: This study evaluated safety, pharmacokinetics, and clinical activity of intravenous and oral rucaparib, a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor, combined with chemotherapy in patients with advanced solid tumours. Methods: Initially, patients received escalating doses of intravenous rucaparib combined with carboplatin, carboplatin/paclitaxel, cisplatin/pemetrexed, or epirubicin/cyclophosphamide. Subsequently, the study was amended to focus on oral rucaparib (once daily, days 1–14) combined with carboplatin (day 1) in 21-day cycles. Dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) were assessed in cycle 1 and safety in all cycles. Results: Eighty-five patients were enrolled (22 breast, 15 ovarian/peritoneal, and 48 other primary cancers), with a median of three prior therapies (range, 1–7). Neutropenia (27.1%) and thrombocytopenia (18.8%) were the most common grade greater than or equal to3 toxicities across combinations and were DLTs with the oral rucaparib/carboplatin combination. Maximum tolerated dose for the combination was 240 mg per day oral rucaparib and carboplatin area under the curve 5 mg ml−1 min−1. Oral rucaparib demonstrated dose-proportional kinetics, a long half-life (≈17 h), and good bioavailability (36%). Pharmacokinetics were unchanged by carboplatin coadministration. The rucaparib/carboplatin combination had radiologic antitumour activity, primarily in BRCA1- or BRCA2-mutated breast and ovarian/peritoneal cancers. Conclusions: Oral rucaparib can be safely combined with a clinically relevant dose of carboplatin in patients with advanced solid tumours (Trial registration ID: NCT01009190)
