    High fidelity sorting of remarkably similar components via metal-mediated assembly.

    Subtle differences in ligand coordination angle and rigidity lead to high fidelity sorting between individual components displaying identical coordination motifs upon metal-mediated self-assembly. Narcissistic self-sorting can be achieved between highly similar ligands that vary minimally in rigidity and internal coordination angle upon combination with Fe(ii) ions and 2-formylpyridine. Selective, sequential cage formation can be precisely controlled in a single flask from a mix of three different core ligands (and 33 total components) differing only in the hybridization of one group that is uninvolved in the metal coordination process

    Contractual Estoppel and the Misrepresentation Act 1967

    Contractual estoppel has been developed in the context of the exclusion of liability for misrepresentation. It provides a legal explanation for the validity of ‘no representation’ and ‘no reliance’ clauses, which may contradict the true state of affairs and prevent a claim for misrepresentation arising. The importance of contractual estoppel does not end there for it may be applied more generally to prevent parties denying the existence of a state of affairs which was the basis of their contract. This paper seeks to answer two central questions that continue to trouble the courts, most commonly when a claim is based upon the alleged mis-selling of a financial product. The questions are: (1) What is the true nature of contractual estoppel? (2) Are ‘no representation’ and ‘no reliance’ clauses subject to the test of reasonableness set out in the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, as extended to contractual terms which ‘exclude or restrict’ liability for misrepresentation by s 3 of the Misrepresentation Act 1967

    This paper reports on teacher attitudes to changes in the provision of careers guidance in the U.K., particularly as it relates to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It draws on survey data of n = 94 secondary-school teachers operating in STEM domains and their attitudes towards a U.K. and devolved policy of internalising careers guidance within schools. The survey presents a mixed message of teachers recognising the significance of their unique position in providing learners with careers guidance yet concern that their ‘relational proximity’ to students and ‘informational distance’ from higher education and STEM industry may produce bias and misinformation that is harmful to their educational and occupational futures

    Selective discrimination and classification of G-quadruplex structures with a host–guest sensing array

    The secondary structures of nucleic acids have an important influence on their cellular functions but can be difficult to identify and classify quickly. Here, we show that an arrayed suite of synthetic hosts and dyes is capable of fluorescence detection of oligonucleotide secondary structures. Multivariate analysis of different fluorescence enhancements—generated using cationic dyes that show affinity for both DNA G-quadruplexes and the synthetic hosts—enables discrimination between G-quadruplex structures of identical length and highly similar topological types. Different G-quadruplexes that display the same folding topology can also be easily differentiated by the number of G-quartets and sequence differences at the 3′ or 5′ ends. The array is capable of both differentiation and classification of the G-quadruplex structures at the same time. This simple non-invasive sensing method does not require the discovery and synthesis of specific G-quadruplex binding ligands, but employs a simple multicomponent approach to ensure wide applicability

    Evaluating the impact of career management skills module and internship programme within a university business school

    This study evaluates the impact of an intervention on business school graduates’ employability comprising of a curriculum-based career management skills (CMS) module and an industrial placement year. The study uses data from the destinations of leavers of higher education survey to examine the employability of different groups within the cohort (no intervention, CMS module only and CMS module plus structured work experience). It finds that structured work experience has clear, positive effects on the ability of graduates to secure employment in ‘graduate level’ jobs within six months of graduation. Furthermore, participation in the CMS module also has a clear, positive effect upon the ability of participants to secure employment
