    What is at stake in labeling a particular incidence of large-scale violence “genocide”? Mahmood Mamdani rightly argues that “genocide” is an insufficient description of the conflict in Darfur. I would suggest that the problematic nature of that terminology goes back to its inception after World War II. Activists have inherited the concept of “genocide” from a particular historical moment. Now, “ genocide” carries unique moral weight in the discourse of international politics. When violence against civilians has been widely accepted as a necessary outcome of the preservation of peace, activists find it necessary to imagine a worse evil than the mere fact of indiscriminate killing. The notion of “genocidal intent” fills that role. But the U.N. Commission’s inability to find “genocidal intent” in the killing of civilians in Darfur demonstrates the limits of that very notion. “Genocide” is considered the worst crime against humanity, but too many massacres and incidents of civilian casualties are not included under its rubric

    Formulation of highly soluble poly(ethylene glycol)-peptide DNA condensates

    Two poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-peptides were synthesized and tested for their ability to bind to plasmid DNA and form soluble DNA condensates with reduced spontaneous gene expression. PEG-vinyl sulfone or PEG-orthopyridyl disulfide were reacted with the sulfhydryl of Cys-Trp-Lys 18 (CWK 18 ) resulting in the formation of nonreducible (PEG-VS-CWK 18 ) and reducible (PEG-SS-CWK 18 ) PEG- peptides. Both PEG-peptides were prepared on a micromole scale, purified by RP-HPLC in >80% yield, and characterized by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF. PEG-peptides bound to plasmid DNA with an apparent affinity that was equivalent to alkylated (Alk)CWK 18 , resulting in DNA condensates with a mean diameter of 80–90 nm and ζ (zeta) potential of +10 mV. The particle size of PEG-peptide DNA condensates was constant throughout the DNA concentration range of 0.05–2 mg/mL, indicating these to be approximately 20-fold more soluble than AlkCWK 18 DNA condensates. The spontaneous gene transfer to HepG2 cells mediated by PEG-VS-CWK 18 DNA conden- sates was over two orders of magnitude lower than PEG-SS-CWK 18 DNA condensates and three orders of magnitude lower than AlkCWK 18 DNA condensates. PEG-VS-CWK 18 efficiently blocked in vitro gene transfer by reducing cell uptake. The results indicate that a high loading density of PEG on DNA is necessary to achieve highly soluble DNA condensates that reduce spontaneous in vitro gene transfer by blocking nonspecific uptake by HepG2 cells.     Diet-induced early-stage atherosclerosis in baboons: lipoproteins, atherogenesis, and arterial compliance

    Background The purpose of this study was to determine if dietary manipulation can reliably induce early-stage atherosclerosis and clinically relevant changes in vascular function in an established, well-characterized nonhuman primate model. Methods We fed 112 baboons a high cholesterol, high fat challenge diet for two years. We assayed circulating biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, at 0, 7, and 104 weeks into the challenge; assessed arterial compliance noninvasively at 104 weeks; and measured atherosclerotic lesions in three major arteries at necropsy. Results We observed evidence of atherosclerosis in all but one baboon fed the two-year challenge diet. CVD risk biomarkers, the prevalence, size, and complexity of arterial lesions, plus consequent arterial stiffness, were increased in comparison to dietary control animals. Conclusions Feeding baboons a high cholesterol, high fat diet for two years reliably induces atherosclerosis, with risk factor profiles, arterial lesions, and changes in vascular function also seen in humans

    Spectral Typing of Late Type Stellar Companions to Young Stars from Low Dispersion Near-Infrared Integral Field Unit Data

    We used the Project 1640 near-infrared coronagraph and integral field spectrograph to observe 19 young solar type stars. Five of these stars are known binary stars and we detected the late-type secondaries and were able to measure their JH spectra with a resolution of R\sim30. The reduced, extracted, and calibrated spectra were compared to template spectra from the IRTF spectral library. With this comparison we test the accuracy and consistency of spectral type determination with the low-resolution near-infrared spectra from P1640. Additionally, we determine effective temperature and surface gravity of the companions by fitting synthetic spectra calculated with the PHOENIX model atmosphere code. We also present several new epochs of astrometry of each of the systems. Together these data increase our knowledge and understanding of the stellar make up of these systems. In addition to the astronomical results, the analysis presented helps validate the Project 1640 data reduction and spectral extraction processes and the utility of low-resolution, near-infrared spectra for characterizing late-type companions in multiple systems.Comment: Accepted to Astronomical Journal, 25 pages, 8 figure
