Commercial digital audio recorders: a new life for portable Lennartz PCM 5800 seismic stations
In the last two decades the use of mobile digital seismic stations has become more and more widespread both for active and passive seismological studies.
Many industries have designed and realized seismic stations suitable for portable use and characterized by small dimension and low power consumptions.
The modern portable seismic instruments are generally provided with 24 bit AD converter, GPS time code and acquisition on high capacity hard disk and/or continuous data stream for telemetry. These data loggers are generally equipped with high sensibility broad-band seismometers.
The PCM 5800 Digital Seismological System has been produced by LENNARTZ ELECTRONIC GmbH (Tubingen, D) since the middle Eighties. It became the first digital seismic equipment for many european and worldwide seismological institutions and laboratories, in many of which it is still in operation.
This instrumentation, however, suffers of a weak point which is the acquisition based on a UHER magnetic tape recorder (13cm wheels) with low capacity (about 8 MB; 90 minutes of continuous recording at 4.75 cm/sec speed). This UHER recorder has high maintenance costs and it often needs expensive repairs.
We propose to replace the UHER recorders with an easy and cheap solution based on commercial digital recorders with removable media in order to continue to use the high number of instruments (Encoder and Decoder) still held by the seismological community, without any modification to the existing hardware and software
10th September 2005: a bolide airblast in the Gulf of Naples (Southern Italy).
On 10th September 2005 at 17:11 local time (15:11 GMT) a loud boom was heard on the Ischia island. A clear seismic signal was also recorded by the seismic monitoring network of the Neapolitan volcanic areas (Ischia, Campi Flegrei and Mt. Vesuvius) and on a regional station (Mt. Massico). On the base of the seismic recordings and on acoustic phenomena reports, we relate this event to the airblast of a bolide at about 15 Km SW of Ischia at an elevation of about 11.5 Km. The location has been obtained through probabilistic non-linear traveltime inversion in a realistic atmospheric model including wind eff ect. We will show, using statistical estimators, how the traveltime pattern is due to both atmospheric winds and bolide trajectory. Using the same reasoning we discard a human origin (supersonic jet or sea-air missile). In addition, we propose also a new algorithm for a fast acoustic traveltime computation for a moving source
The modern digital seismic stations are provided with 24 bit A/D converters, high capacity recording systems and broad-band seismometers. Nevertheless, few tens year old seismic stations can be still able to give an useful contribution to seismic monitoring. Some out-of-date seismic stations, such as the Lennartz PCM 5800, are characterized by the data acquisition in trigger mode on magnetic tape, allowing a continuous recording time of about 90 minutes. We have checked the possibility to substitute the Uher tape recorder of the Lennartz PCM 5800 stations with modern digital recorder, in order to give a new life to these stations.
Several type of digital recorders have been tried. According to the results of our trials, the Hi-MiniDisc (Hi-MD) recorder is resulted the most useful one. This apparatus records on 1GB magneto-optical disks with a continuous recording time up to about 8 hours. This time allows to record about 500 trigger windows of about 50-60 seconds on one disk, about 5 time the old magnetic tape. According with these results, the Lennartz PCM 5800 digital seismic stations can be useful during seismic experiments or as a support of the Permanent Seismic Networks at local and regional scale
Multiparametric data analysis for seismic sources identification in the Campania re-gion: merge of seismological, structural and gravimetric data.
The Campania region is one of the Italian most active areas from a geodynamic point of view since it is characterized by occurrence of intense and widely spread seismic activity. The seismicity of the area is concentrated mainly along the Southern Apennines chain, as well as beneath the Campanian volcanic areas (Vesuvio, Campi Flegrei, Ischia) and is also originated by seismic sources buried in the Campanian Plain and offshore the Thyrrenian sea. The aim of this paper is an attempt to better constrain the main active, outcropping and buried fault systems of the Campanian area through the correlation between seismicity, tectonic structures (from geological data and image analysis) and gravimetric data. The main seismogenetic sources of the Campanian Apennines, responsible for the destructive historical events of 1456, 1688, 1694, 1702, 1732, 1930, 1962 and 1980 (Io = X-XI MCS), activated mainly along NWâSE faults (CPTI, 2004; DISS, 2010) with hypocenters concentrated within the upper 20 km of the crust. The available focal mechanisms of the larger events show normal solutions consistent with NEâSW extension (Pondrelli et al., 2007).
The Plio-Pleistocene Campanian Plain is a structural depression located between the eastern side of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Southern Apennines chain. The stress field acting in the Campanian Plain is strongly debated. Structural observations on the faults of the Plain suggest prevalent normal motion for the NWâSE and the NEâSW trending faults, and minor oblique motion, consistent with deformation style of the Southern Apennines. The Plain is characterized by seismicity of energy lower than the seismic activity of the Southern Apennines chain mainly occurring along its margins. Minor seismicity spreads out inside the Plain.
In this paper, seismic, geologic and gravimetric data have been analysed in GIS environment. In particular, the seismological data used in this study are relative both to the historical and recent seismic activity, collected by the following Catalogues: CPTI04 Catalogue of Parametric Italian Earthquakes, 2004 (217 b.C to 2002); CSI Catalogue of Instrumental Italian Earthquakes (1981-2002); CNT Seismic Bulletin of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (2003-2008); Data Base of Seismic Laboratory of Osservatorio Vesuviano (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) (2000-2009); SisCam Catalogue (Seismotectonic Information System of the Campanian Region) (1980-2000). Seismic data have been merged in a new seismic database. Moreover, new precise locations of a set of seismic events relative to the Campanian Plain have been processed. Some clusters of epicentres have been identified confirming the existence of active buried fault systems inside the Plain. The Geological Dataset has been implemented by merging all outcropping and buried faults extracted from the available geological and geophysical papers and maps (Bigi et al., 1983; Ambrosetti et al. 1986; Bonardi et al.,1988; Orsi et al. 1996; Milia A. e Torrente M.M.,1999; Cinque et al. 2000; Bruno et al. 2003). A multiscale analysis of the gravity and magnetic fields of the Southern Italy has been performed by Fedi et al, 2005. Multiscale Derivative Analysis (MDA) provided an almost complete representation of the structural framework of Southern Italy at three different scales. Most of the known geological elements of the Apennine system are clearly shown at intermediate and short scales, together with several trends indicating the location of buried structures. The main results of the combined analysis of seismic epicentres, faults and gravity data, indicate a strong correlation between seismicity and MDA lineaments from gravity data. Moreover, tectonic structures without correlated seismic activity and spread seismicity, apparently not linked with already known faults (buried faults?) have been identified

strutturazione come sezione dellâINGV consentiva unâorganizzazione in UnitĂ Funzionali e Servizi.
Costituzione.

nuova configurazione giuridica.
2002 ed è visitabile all'indirizzo http://www.ov.ingv.it.
tecnologiche adottate
The Recent Seismicity of Campi Flegrei Caldera (Italy)
Campi Flegrei caldera is located in a very densely populated
area. Half of the city of Naples lies within the caldera
rims with about 350000 people living on this active
volcano. For this reason the surveillance of this volcano
requires advanced monitoring techniques in order to
forecast even minor eruptions. The area was interested
in the period 1982-84 by an unrest crisis with more than
16000 earthquakes and about 2m of ground uplift...INGV;Sezione di Napoli,Osservatorio VesuvianoPublishedTenerife, Canary Islands, Spain1.4.
PublishedRoma1.4.
