Scaling laws and universality in the choice of election candidates

Nowadays there is an increasing interest of physicists in finding regularities related to social phenomena. This interest is clearly motivated by applications that a statistical mechanical description of the human behavior may have in our society. By using this framework, we address this work to cover an open question related to elections: the choice of elections candidates (candidature process). Our analysis reveals that, apart from the social motivations, this system displays features of traditional out-of-equilibrium physical phenomena such as scale-free statistics and universality. Basically, we found a non-linear (power law) mean correspondence between the number of candidates and the size of the electorate (number of voters), and also that this choice has a multiplicative underlying process (lognormal behavior). The universality of our findings is supported by data from 16 elections from 5 countries. In addition, we show that aspects of network scale-free can be connected to this universal behavior.Comment: Accepted for publication in EP

Matching LTB and FRW spacetimes through a null hypersurface

    Get PDF
Matching of a LTB metric representing dust matter to a background FRW universe across a null hypersurface is studied. In general, an unrestricted matching is possible only if the background FRW is flat or open. There is in general no gravitational impulsive wave present on the null hypersurface which is shear-free and expanding. Special cases of the vanishing pressure or energy density on the hypersurface is discussed. In the case of vanishing energy momentum tensor of the null hypersurface, i.e. in the case of a null boundary, it turns out that all possible definitions of the Hubble parameter on the null hypersurface, being those of LTB or that of FRW, are equivalent, and that a flat FRW can only be joined smoothly to a flat LTB.Comment: 9 page

Five-Dimensional QED, Muon Pair Production and Correction to the Coulomb Potential

We consider QED in five dimensions in a configuration where matter is localized on a 3-brane while foton propagates in the bulk. The idea is to investigate the effects of the Kaluza-Klein modes of the photon in the relativistic regime, but in low energy, and in the nonrelativistic regime. In the relativistic regime, we calculate the cross section for the reaction e++e−→μ++μ−e^+ + e^- \to \mu^+ + \mu^-. We compare our theoretical result with a precise measurement of this cross section at s=57.77\sqrt{s}=57.77 GeV. As result, we extract a lower bound on the size of the extra dimension. In the nonrelativistic regime, we derive the contribution for the Coulomb potential due to the whole tower of the Kaluza-Klein excited modes of the photon. We use the modified potential to calculate the Rutherford scattering differential cross section.Comment: minor changes, three new refs. added, to appear in IJMP

Chemical abundances for the transiting planet host stars OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1. Abundances in different galactic populations

We used the UVES spectrograph (VLT-UT2 telescope) to obtain high-resolution spectra of 6 stars hosting transiting planets, namely for OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1. The spectra are now used to derive and discuss the chemical abundances for C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn. Abundances were derived in LTE, using 1-D plane-parallel Kurucz model atmospheres. For S, Zn and Cu we used a spectral synthesis procedure, while for the remaining cases the abundances were derived from measurements of line-equivalent widths. The resulting abundances are compared with those found for stars in the solar neighborhood. Distances and galactic coordinates are estimated for the stars. We conclude that besides being particularly metal-rich, with small possible exceptions OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1 are chemically undistinguishable from the field (thin disk) stars regarding their [X/Fe] abundances. This is particularly relevant for the most distant of the targets, located at up to ~2 Kpc from the Sun. We also did not find any correlation between the abundances and the condensation temperature of the elements, an evidence that strong accretion of planetary-like material, tentatively connected to planetary migration, did not occur.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (June 2006

Aceptacion de la publicidad a través de altavoces inteligentes

Purpose: The influence of technology on marketing communications is rising in both applications and value created. Artificial intelligence (AI) and, as a result, smart speakers are benefiting both brands and customers at many levels. In particular, AI opens up the possibility to establish human-like dialogs with customers and to advertise brands in a new and engaging way. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to understand why and how consumers would accept receiving advertising (ad) via AI-enabled devices such as smart speakers. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 326 individuals participated in a study that explored the factors influencing ad acceptance in smart devices. A partial least squares-structural equation model technique was used to validate the results. Findings: The findings show that customer acceptance of ads via smart assistants is influenced by smart assistant usefulness and hedonic motivations. However, privacy risk moderates the relationship between smart speaker ease of use and smart speaker usefulness. Originality/value: This paper explores the main drivers of ad acceptance via smart speakers and goes beyond the existing knowledge of smart speaker acceptance to further explore how this can become an important channel for brands to communicate.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

On the dynamics of bubbles in boiling water

We investigate the dynamics of many interacting bubbles in boiling water by using a laser scattering experiment. Specifically, we analyze the temporal variations of a laser intensity signal which passed through a sample of boiling water. Our empirical results indicate that the return interval distribution of the laser signal does not follow an exponential distribution; contrariwise, a heavy-tailed distribution has been found. Additionally, we compare the experimental results with those obtained from a minimalist phenomenological model, finding a good agreement.Comment: Accepted for publication in Chaos, Solitons & Fractal

Effects of atmospherics on emotions and intention with respect to involvement under different shopping environments

    Get PDF
The present study deals with the S–O–R framework. The past five decades of research have successful validate the S–O–R model in offline and online contexts. However, there is still room for improvements. In particular, hedonic aspects have been proposed as distinctive aspects to differentiate companies. Previous researchers have (i) been somewhat reluctant to investigate dominance and other emotional responses; and (ii) produced mixed results regarding the impact of atmospherics and emotional responses on behavior. Building on this tradition of research, this study investigates the S-O-R model by incorporating delight as an attitudinal emotional response and tests the moderating effects of consumers’ involvement and shopping environment (three-way interactional effects) in connection with the links among atmospherics, emotions and intentions. The current findings demonstrate that the model fit better for low involvement consumers than for high involvement consumers. This was true for both offline and online environments .The theoretical and practical implications are discussed in the conclusions.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
