The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the integrated application of nitrogen fertilizer and biofertilizers on the yield, grain filling period, and composition of fatty acids of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). Split-plot experiments were carried out during the 2011 and 2012 crop seasons. The treatments consisted of seed inoculation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (Azotobacter chroococcum strain 5, Azospirillum lipoferum strain F, and Pseudomonas putida strain 186) in the subplots, including a control without seed inoculation; and of the application of N fertilizer at different rates (60, 120, and 180 kg ha-1 urea) in the main plots, including a control without N. The highest grain yield, grain filling period, and effective grain filling period were obtained by the application of 180 kg ha-1 urea and by seed inoculation with P. putida. The application of high N rates and P. putida inoculation resulted in 25.66% increase of the potential rate of grain filling. Biofertilizer inoculation in seed reduced the contents of saturated fatty acids (palmetic and stearic acids) and increased the contents of unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic, linolenic, and oleic acids). The suitable amount of N fertilizer (between 120 and 180 kg ha-1 urea) can improve plant growth, and the quantity and quality of oil in seeds treated with P. putida in safflower plants.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação integrada de fertilizante nitrogenado e biofertilizantes sobre o rendimento, o período de enchimento de grãos e a composição de ácidos graxos de cártamo (Carthamus tinctorius).

Closed total talus dislocation without fracture: a case report

    Get PDF
Total dislocation of the talus from all of its joints is a rare injury specially when the talus and malleoli are not fractured and frequently it is as a result of a high-energy trauma. It usually leads to degenerative changes in neighboring joints and frequently avascular necrosis is a predictable outcome. We present a case of total talus dislocation because of a high-energy trauma in association with other major fractures resulting from a fall from height, but no fracture could be detected in the talus and any of malleols. Closed reduction was unsuccessful and we performed open reduction. At 6 month post operation follow-up, the talus didn't show subluxation and avascular necrosis could not be detected

    Get PDF
Background: Cancellation of surgical procedures is one of the biggest challenges in hospitals throughout the world and it is important as it increases patients' stress, expenses and wastage of time, and prolongs the duration of hospitalization of patients. The aim of this study was to review literature related to reasons of surgery cancellation in Iran. Methods: This systematic review was conducted from March to Sep. 2014. The keywords including cancellation, delay, postpone, cancelled surgery, surgery operation and Iran were searched in international search engines including Pubmed, Scopus, ProQust and Google scholar and Persian indexing websites of SID, Magiran and Iranmedex. All articles related to cancelled operations in Iran, written in English or Persian (from Jan 1, 2004 until Sep 31, 2014) were collected. Then, those articles which contained any of the selected keywords in their titles or abstracts were compiled, and others were excluded. At last, a check list including title of article, time and location of study, sample size and location and cancellation cause was designed for final assessment. Results: A total of 646 records were found in 7 selected databases of which 13 articles met the criteria for inclusion in this study. The main cases of surgery cancellation were related to operating room and hospital, anesthesia, patient's non-clinical problems, the surgeon and clinical problems. Conclusions: Adoption of strategies for on-time initiation of surgical procedures, identification of patients' underlying problems and the appropriate process of hospital admission can be effective in reducing the rate of cancelled operations

    Get PDF
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited genetic disorder with chronic respiratory manifestations. The respiratory symptoms may start very early in life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of respiratory pathogens in children with CF. In this clinical laboratory study, 100 CF patients were prospectively collected from February 2016 to March 2017. Microbiological cultures and antimicrobial susceptibility tests of the most frequently isolated upper respiratory tract bacteria were performed. According to the results of this study, Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent microorganism 24 (24%) in CF patients followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21 (21%). In children younger than one-year-old, Enterococci and Klebsiella pneumonia were the most frequently isolated pathogens. In other age groups, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeroginosa were most frequent. All pathogens showed more sensitivity to Ceftriaxone, Amikacin, and Ceftazidime. However, Staphylococcus aureus was most sensitive to Cefoxitin, Clindamycin, and Linezolid and Pseudomonas aeroginosa were most sensitive to Amikacin, Ceftazidime, and Ceftriaxone respectively. In conclusion, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeroginosa were the most frequent microorganisms in CF patients in our population. In patients younger than one-year-old, the most frequent pathogens were Enterococci and Klebsiella. All pathogens and Pseudomonas aeroginosa were sensitive to Ceftriaxone, Amikacin, and Ceftazidime but Staphylococcus aureus was most sensitive to Cefoxitin, Clindamycin, and Linezolid respectively. It seems that Ceftriaxone, Amikacin, and Ceftazidime are the most suitable antibiotics for the treatment of pulmonary infections in CF patients in our population

    Get PDF
AIM: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of applying Gates-Glidden (GG) drill by pre-clinical dental students on root canal treatment quality. METHOD: A total of 56 first molars consisting of 168 canals were selected in this study. For this purpose, 56 students who had been formerly trained by two methods of root canal preparation were randomly divided into two groups (n = 28). Group 1: the step-down method by GG and Group 2: step-back technique without GG. The prepared teeth were filled with gutta-percha/ZOE sealer using lateral condensation. Periapical radiographs were taken before and the following treatment to survey occurrence of preparation errors and CBCT images to determine residual dentine at furcation region. RESULTS: The findings showed that among 10 error types in specimens prepared by students, the occurrence of underfilling, overfilling, inappropriate, ledge formation, and single cone was more common without GG. There were no significant differences in residual dentine amount at furcation region between preparation with and without using GG (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Using GG for root canal preparation by dental students resulted in low errors and not an increased dentine removal risk

Munchausen syndrome as scorpion biting:a misdiagnosis

    Get PDF
Factitious disorder as Munchausen syndrome is a time and money consuming condition that is presented with different signs and symptoms. In emergent situations, it is not a differential diagnosis with high priority, but when it becomes recurrent with atypical symptoms, factitious disorder and malingering should be considered as well. In this survey, we report an odd and interesting presentation of a factitious disease as a scorpion sting which misled some professional healthcare providers until the patient finally confessed that she used turmeric to mimic the signs of a scorpion sting. She exaggerated her symptoms when asked about the details of the mechanism of the scorpion bite. When encountering an emergent condition, after ruling out the critical conditions especially when the symptom is recurrent, factitious disorders should be considered. Consultation with a psychiatrist help the team manage the patient properly

Correlation of Preoperative and Radical Prostatectomy Gleason Score: Examining the Predictors of Upgrade and Downgrade Results

    Get PDF
Preoperative Gleason score (GS) obtained from Trans Rectal Ultra Sonography (TRUS) is the most common grading system to evaluate the appropriate treatment for patients with clinically localized prostate cancer. But this method showed upgraded and downgraded results in comparison to Gleason score obtained from radical prostatectomy. The current study aimed to determine clinical or pathological variables to reduce the differences between biopsy and radical prostatectomy Gleason scores.Through retrospective review of 52 patients with radical prostatectomy, this study examined the correlations of preoperative Gleason score with age, prostate volume, PSA level, PSA density, digital rectal exam findings and percentage of positive core needle biopsies across two groups, including patients with preoperative GS≤6 (i.e. group one) and patients with preoperative GS≥7 (group two). The discordance between biopsy GS and radical prostatectomy GS was observed to be 52% in the current study. Among patients with preoperative GS≤6, prostate volume (P=0.026), PSA density (P=0.032) and percentage of positive core needle biopsies (P=0.042) were found to be significant predictors for upgrade. There was no significant predictor for downgrade in patients with preoperative GS≥7. Findings of this study revealed that in patients with preoperative GS≤6, smaller prostate volume, higher prostate density and higher positive results of core needle biopsies were associated with theupgrade of GS. Therefore, it should be considered when selecting treatment modalities among these patients
