    The taxonomic relevance of flower colour for Epimedium (Berberidaceae), with morphological and nomenclatural notes for five species from China

    Morphological variations, particularly flower colour, could be considered as an evolutionarily and ornamentally significant taxonomic criterion for Epimedium. Our extensive field investigation based on population studies revealed abundant intraspecific variations in flower colour. Five species, (i.e., E. acuminatum Franch., E. leptorrhizum Stearn, E. pauciflorum K.C.Yen, E. mikinorii Stearn, and E. glandulosopilosum H.R.Liang) were found to possess polymorphic flower colour, which is first described and illustrated here. Moreover, all these species were found to be polymorphic in other diagnostic characters, such as the type of rhizome, the number and arrangement of stem-leaves, and/or their indumentum, which have not been adequately described in previous studies. Therefore, their morphological descriptions have been complemented and/or revised. We also provide notes on the morphology and nomenclature for each species. Additionally, a key to the species in China has been provided. The present study could serve as a basis for understanding their taxonomy and helping their utilisation as an ornamental plant

    Exercise for prevention of falls and fall-related injuries in neurodegenerative diseases and aging-related risk conditions: a meta-analysis

    IntroductionNeurodegenerative diseases often cause motor and cognitive deterioration that leads to postural instability and motor impairment, while aging-associated frailty frequently results in reduced muscle mass, balance, and mobility. These conditions increase the risk of falls and injuries in these populations. This study aimed to determine the effects of exercise on falls and consequent injuries among individuals with neurodegenerative diseases and frail aging people.MethodsElectronic database searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, SportDiscus, and Web of Science up to 1 January 2023. Randomized controlled trials that reported the effects of exercise on falls and fall-related injuries in neurodegenerative disease and frail aging people were eligible for inclusion. The intervention effects for falls, fractures, and injuries were evaluated by calculating the rate ratio (RaR) or risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI).ResultsSixty-four studies with 13,241 participants met the inclusion criteria. Exercise is effective in reducing falls for frail aging people (RaR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.68–0.82) and participants with ND (0.53, 0.43–0.65) [dementia (0.64, 0.51–0.82), Parkinson’s disease (0.49, 0.39–0.69), and stroke survivors (0.40, 0.27–0.57)]. Exercise also reduced fall-related injuries in ND patients (RR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.48–0.90) and decreased fractures (0.63, 0.41–0.95) and fall-related injuries (0.89, 0.84–0.95) among frail aging people. For fall prevention, balance and combined exercise protocols are both effective, and either short-, moderate-, or long-term intervention duration is beneficial. More importantly, exercise only induced a very low injury rate per participant year (0.007%; 95% CI, 0–0.016) and show relatively good compliance with exercise (74.8; 95% CI, 69.7%–79.9%).DiscussionExercise is effective in reducing neurodegenerative disease- and aging-associated falls and consequent injuries, suggesting that exercise is an effective and feasible strategy for the prevention of falls

    Post-treatment follow-up study of abdominal cystic echinococcosis in Tibetan communities of northwest Sichuan Province, China

    Background: Human cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, with the liver as the most frequently affected organ, is known to be highly endemic in Tibetan communities of northwest Sichuan Province. Antiparasitic treatment with albendazole remains the primary choice for the great majority of patients in this resource-poor remote area, though surgery is the most common approach for CE therapy that has the potential to remove cysts and lead to complete cure. The current prospective study aimed to assess the effectiveness of community based use of cyclic albendazole treatment in Tibetan CE cases, and concurrently monitor the changes of serum specific antibody levels during treatment. Methodology/Principal Findings: Ultrasonography was applied for diagnosis and follow-up of CE cases after cyclic albendazole treatment in Tibetan communities of Sichuan Province during 2006 to 2008, and serum specific IgG antibody levels against Echinococcus granulosus recombinant antigen B in ELISA was concurrently monitored in these cases. A total of 196 CE cases were identified by ultrasound, of which 37 (18.9%) showed evidence of spontaneous healing/involution of hepatic cyst(s) with CE4 or CE5 presentations. Of 49 enrolled CE cases for treatment follow-up, 32.7% (16) were considered to be cured based on B-ultrasound after 6 months to 30 months regular albendazole treatment, 49.0% (24) were improved, 14.3% (7) remained unchanged, and 4.1% (2) became aggravated. In general, patients with CE2 type cysts (daughter cysts present) needed a longer treatment course for cure (26.4 months), compared to cases with CE1 (univesicular cysts) (20.4 months) or CE3 type (detached cyst membrane or partial degeneration of daughter cysts) (9 months). In addition, the curative duration was longer in patients with large (.10 cm) cysts (22.3 months), compared to cases with medium (5– 10 cm) cysts (17.3 months) or patients with small (,5 cm) cysts (6 months). At diagnosis, seven (53.8%) of 13 cases with CE1 type cysts without any previous intervention showed negative specific IgG antibody response to E. granulosus recombinant antigen B (rAgB). However, following 3 months to 18 months albendazole therapy, six of these 7 initially seronegative CE1 cases sero-converted to be specific IgG antibody positive, and concurrently ultrasound scan showed that cysts changed to CE3a from CE1 type in all the six CE cases. Two major profiles of serum specific IgG antibody dynamics during albendazole treatment were apparent in CE cases: (i) presenting as initial elevation followed by subsequent decline, or (ii) a persistent decline. Despite a decline, however, specific antibody levels remained positive in most improved or cured CE cases. Conclusions: This was the first attempt to follow up community-screened cystic echinococcosis patients after albendazole therapy using ultrasonography and serology in an endemic Tibetan region. Cyclic albendazole treatment proved to be effective in the great majority of CE cases in this resource-poor area, but periodic abdominal ultrasound examination was necessary to guide appropriate treatment. Oral albendazole for over 18 months was more likely to result in CE cure. Poor drug compliance resulted in less good outcomes. Serology with recombinant antigen B could provide additional limited information about the effectiveness of albendazole in CE cases. Post-treatment positive specific IgG antibody seroconversion, in initially seronegative, CE1 patients was considered a good indication for positive therapeutic efficacy of albendazole

    Molecular Analysis of Virulent Determinants of Enterovirus 71

    Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is the most important causative agent of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. In most cases, it is a self-limiting illness. However some EV71 infectious cases can develop severe clinical outcomes, such as encephalitis, meningitis, poliomyelitis like paralysis, and even death. To identify the determinants of virulence, the deduced amino acid sequence of polyprotein and nucleotide sequence of 5β€²-NTR and 3β€²-NTR in 25 SC-EV71 strains (strains from severe cases) and 31 MC-EV71 strains (strains from mild cases) were analyzed. Results showed four amino acids on two positions (GlyP710/GlnP710/ArgP710 and GluP729) on the DE and EF loop of VP1, one (LysP930) on the surface of protease 2A and four nucleotides on three positions (GP272, UP488 and AP700/UP700) in the 5'-NTR region are associated with EV71 virulent phenotype. Predicted secondary structure of RNA using the consensus sequence of 5'-NTR by RNAStructure showed the mutation of nucleotide at position 488 in strain BJ08-Z004-3 (position 491 in prototype strain BrCr) can result in the discrepancy of an additional pair of nucleotides and thus change the stability of the second structure of IRES. Fragment base content analysis showed that in the region 696 to 714 bp at the 5'-NTR, where the AP700/UP700 was located, the nucleotide constitution ratios differed significantly between SC-EV71 and MC-EV71 strains. In conclusion, comparative genomic analysis showed that virulence of EV71 strains are mainly determined by the amino acids on two positions of VP1, one position of protease 2A and the nucleotides on three positions in 5'-NTR

    Research on Disease Spreading Behavior Oriented to Three-Layer Complex Networks

    Disease spreading in multi-layer complex networks often spreads among multiple populations with the help of media. In order to reveal the cross-layer spreading characteristics of diseases and control the cross-layer spreading of diseases by analyzing the inter-layer coupling mechanism in multi-layer complex networks, this paper proposes and establishes three kinds of three-layer disease spreading models based on SIS spreading mechanism, and analyzes the influence of spreading conditions, spreading speed, and diffusion range on disease spreading and corresponding immunization strategies. It is deduced theoretically that the spreading threshold of global network is relatively lower than that of a single-layer network. As the intermediary layer of the global network bridge, the strong coupling is more likely to cause the network to show multi-peak characteristic, and the influence of multi-peak transformation on the spreading speed is higher than that of the network generation mechanism. The immune strategy of isolating middle-layer nodes can effectively inhibit the spread of diseases. The research results of this paper are helpful to understand the spreading characteristics of various information in the real world

    Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of the Qiaoke sheep (Ovis aries)

    Qiaoke sheep (Ovis aries) is a local sheep breed in Gansu province, China. It is a kind of Tibetan sheep that used for both meat and wool after long-term breeding. In this paper, the complete mitochondrial genome of Qiaoke sheep was sequenced. The total length of the mitochondrial genome is 16616 bp, and the base composition is 33.65% A, 13.14% G, 25.88% C and 27.33% T. The genome has a total of 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and a control region (D-loop region). This complete sequence would enlarge useful genomic information for further studies

    Bottom-up and top-down effects on phytoplankton communities in two freshwater lakes.

    The relative importance of bottom-up versus top-down effects in aquatic ecosystems remains a longstanding and ongoing controversy. To investigate these effects on phytoplankton communities in freshwater lakes, phytoplankton and zooplankton were sampled, and physical-chemical variables were measured during spring and summer in two important freshwater lakes in northern China: Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake. The redundancy analysis results showed that phytoplankton density and biomass were regulated by physical-chemical variables (bottom-up effects) and predation (top-down effects) together, and the former was more prominent in both lakes. However, the correlation analysis indicated that the top-down effects of zooplankton on phytoplankton were not significant in spring and summer in both lakes, while the bottom-up regulation of physical-chemical variables on phytoplankton had different patterns in the two lakes. In Nansi Lake, the bottom-up effects of physical-chemical variables on phytoplankton were weaker in summer than that in spring due to the abundant nutrients in summer. In Dongping Lake, the bottom-up effects of physical-chemical on phytoplankton were significant both in spring and summer, and the dominant bottom-up control factor shifted from total nitrogen in spring to total phosphorus in summer, with an increased ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus due to changes in limiting factors. In the two studied lakes, with fish culture, the bottom-up effects of phytoplankton on zooplankton were more important than the top-down effects of zooplankton on phytoplankton. These results demonstrate the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton and highlight the importance of phytoplankton regulation in freshwater lakes, which has implications for the effective management of freshwater lake ecosystems

    DPPH Radical Scavenging Activity of New Phenolics from the Fermentation Broth of Mushroom <i>Morehella importuna</i>

    In recent years, wild morel mushroom species have begun to be widely cultivated in China due to their high edible and medicinal values. To parse the medicinal ingredients, we employed the technique of liquid-submerged fermentation to investigate the secondary metabolites of Morehella importuna. Two new natural isobenzofuranone derivatives (1–2) and one new orsellinaldehyde derivative (3), together with seven known compounds, including one o-orsellinaldehyde (4), phenylacetic acid (5), benzoic acid (6), 4-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid (7), 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (8), N,Nβ€²-pentane-1,5-diyldiacetamide (9), and 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (10), were obtained from the fermented broth of M. importuna. Their structures were determined according to the data of NMR, HR Q-TOF MS, IR, UV, optical activity, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. TLC-bioautography displayed that these compounds possess significant antioxidant activity with the half DPPH free radical scavenging concentration of 1.79 (1), 4.10 (2), 4.28 (4), 2.45 (5), 4.40 (7), 1.73 (8), and 6.00 (10) mM. The experimental results would shed light on the medicinal value of M. importuna for its abundant antioxidants

    Influenza A virus nucleoprotein derived from <it>Escherichia coli</it> or recombinant vaccinia (Tiantan) virus elicits robust cross-protection in mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Immunity to conserved viral antigens is an attractive approach to develop a universal vaccine against epidemic and pandemic influenza. A nucleoprotein (NP)-based vaccine has been explored and preliminary studies have shown promise. However, no study has explored the immunity and cross-protective efficacy of recombinant NP derived from <it>Escherichia coli</it> compared with recombinant vaccinia virus (Tiantan).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Recombinant NP protein (rNP) from influenza virus A/Jingke/30/95(H3N2) was obtained from <it>E. coli</it> and recombinant vaccinia virus (Tiantan) RVJ1175NP. Purified rNP without adjuvant and RVJ1175NP were used to immunize BALB/c mice intramuscularly. Humoral immune responses were detected by ELISA, while cell-mediated immune responses were measured by <it>ex vivo</it> IFN-Ξ³ ELISPOT and <it>in vivo</it> cytotoxicity assays. The cross-protective efficacy was assessed by a challenge with a heterosubtype of influenza virus A/PR/8/34(H1N1).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our results demonstrate that a high dose (90 ΞΌg) of rNP induced NP-specific antibodies and T cell responses that were comparable with those of RVJ1175NP in mice. Importantly, the survival ratio (36, 73, and 78%) of the vaccinated mice after the influenza virus A/PR/8/34(H1N1) challenge was rNP vaccine dose-dependent (10, 30, and 90 ΞΌg, respectively), and no significant differences were observed between the rNP- and RVJ1175NP-immunized (91%) mice.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Influenza A virus NP derived from <it>E. coli</it> or recombinant vaccinia (Tiantan) virus elicited cross-protection against influenza virus in mice, and the immune response and protective efficacy of rNP were comparable to RVJ1175NP. These data provide a basis for the use of prokaryotically expressed NP as a candidate universal influenza vaccine.</p
