    Hybridized surface plasmon polaritons at an interface between a metal and a uniaxial crystal

    The surface plasmonpolariton (SPP) at an interface between a metal and a uniaxial crystal is studied. A new class of hybridized SPP found in this work is quite different from the traditional SPP at the interface between a metal and an isotropic dielectric. In contrast to the two evanescent fields for the traditional SPP, the hybridized SPP involves four evanescent fields: transverse-electric-like and transverse-magnetic-like waves in the metal, and ordinary-light-like and extraordinary-light-like waves in the uniaxial crystal. The necessary conditions and the regimes for the existence of the hybridized SPP are presented.     Clinical efficacy and safety of edaravone therapy in acute cerebral haemorrhage

    Purpose: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of edaravone in the treatment of acute cerebral haemorrhage (ACH).Methods: This study recruited 120 patients who developed ACH. The patients were divided into control and treatment groups with 60 patients per group. The control group underwent conventional treatment and the treatment group also received intravenous edaravone. The volumes of cerebral edema and cerebral hematoma, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, and Chinese Stroke Scale (CSS) score before and after treatment were compared between the two groups.Results: The respective cerebral edema volumes of the control and treatment groups decreased from 20.99 ± 12.09 and 21.80 ± 12.01 mL on day 0 to 11.23 ± 6.34 and 12.11 ± 5.98 mL at day 7 and 4.69 ± 4.03 and 4.64 ± 3.9 mL on day 14 (P < 0.05). The respective cerebral hematoma volumes of the control and treatment groups decreased from 18.98 ± 12.04 and 18.97 ± 12.07 mL on day 0 to 12.34 ± 6.57 and 11.89 ± 4.01 mL at day 7 and 9.49 ± 3.95 and 9.52 ± 3.96 mL on day 14. Compared with pretreatment, hs-CRP and IL-6 levels and CSS score of the two groups decreased significantly following treatment (p < 0.05); the differences in the cerebral edema and hematoma volumes of the two groups on days 7 and 14 were not significant (p > 0.05). The hs-CRP and IL-6 levels and CSS scores of the treatment group decreased appreciably (p < 0.05), while the incidence of adverse reactions in the treatment and control groups was 16.67 and 13.33 %, respectively, but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Edaravone shows remarkable clinical efficacy and safety with no obvious adverse reactions in the treatment of ACH.     Study on the yellowing of high quality japonica rice before entering the warehouse after harvesting

    Through the simulation of different climatic conditions (clear,cloudy day and rainy day) before the storage of high-quality japonica rice under laboratory conditions,the yellowing of freshly harvested high-quality japonica rice cultivar Nanjing 9108 under different climates was studied,and the yellowing was observed.The quality changes in the process were measured.The results showed that yellowing did not occur in 35 days at 25 ℃and 30 ℃under sunny conditions,and in the process of yellowing,the yellow-coloured index from 28.02 to 31.02,the fatty acid value was less than 25 mg KOH/100g,the husked rice yield was more than 81%,and head rice yield was less than 55%.Under rainy conditions,80%RH,25 ℃and 30 ℃,there was no yellowing in 35 days.the heat reached 40 ℃,yellowing occured in 20 to 25 days.the heat reached 50 ℃,yellowing occurred in 15 days.90%RH,25 ℃and 30 ℃,yellowing occurred in 35 days.the heat reached 40 ℃,yellowing occurred in 15 to 20 days,the heat reached 40 ℃,yellowing occurred in 15 days During the yellowing process,the yellow-coloured index from 28.03 to 32.69,the change of fatty acid value was obvious and,followed by the husked rice yield,the first grade of Japonica rice was reduced to the second grade,and the head rice yield was lower than 50%,which was less than the requirement of the third grade of high quality Japonica rice

    Calcium-sensing receptors regulate cardiomyocyte Ca2+ signaling via the sarcoplasmic reticulum-mitochondrion interface during hypoxia/reoxygenation

    Communication between the SR (sarcoplasmic reticulum, SR) and mitochondria is important for cell survival and apoptosis. The SR supplies Ca2+ directly to mitochondria via inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs) at close contacts between the two organelles referred to as mitochondrion-associated ER membrane (MAM). Although it has been demonstrated that CaR (calcium sensing receptor) activation is involved in intracellular calcium overload during hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/Re), the role of CaR activation in the cardiomyocyte apoptotic pathway remains unclear. We postulated that CaR activation plays a role in the regulation of SR-mitochondrial inter-organelle Ca2+ signaling, causing apoptosis during H/Re. To investigate the above hypothesis, cultured cardiomyocytes were subjected to H/Re. We examined the distribution of IP3Rs in cardiomyocytes via immunofluorescence and Western blotting and found that type 3 IP3Rs were located in the SR. [Ca2+]i, [Ca2+]m and [Ca2+]SR were determined using Fluo-4, x-rhod-1 and Fluo 5N, respectively, and the mitochondrial membrane potential was detected with JC-1 during reoxygenation using laser confocal microscopy. We found that activation of CaR reduced [Ca2+]SR, increased [Ca2+]i and [Ca2+]m and decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential during reoxygenation. We found that the activation of CaR caused the cleavage of BAP31, thus generating the pro-apoptotic p20 fragment, which induced the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria and the translocation of bak/bax to mitochondria. Taken together, these results reveal that CaR activation causes Ca2+ release from the SR into the mitochondria through IP3Rs and induces cardiomyocyte apoptosis during hypoxia/reoxygenation

    An anoikis-related gene signature predicts prognosis and reveals immune infiltration in hepatocellular carcinoma

    BackgroundHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a global health burden with poor prognosis. Anoikis, a novel programmed cell death, has a close interaction with metastasis and progression of cancer. In this study, we aimed to construct a novel bioinformatics model for evaluating the prognosis of HCC based on anoikis-related gene signatures as well as exploring the potential mechanisms.Materials and methodsWe downloaded the RNA expression profiles and clinical data of liver hepatocellular carcinoma from TCGA database, ICGC database and GEO database. DEG analysis was performed using TCGA and verified in the GEO database. The anoikis-related risk score was developed via univariate Cox regression, LASSO Cox regression and multivariate Cox regression, which was then used to categorize patients into high- and low-risk groups. Then GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to investigate the function between the two groups. CIBERSORT was used for determining the fractions of 22 immune cell types, while the ssGSEA analyses was used to estimate the differential immune cell infiltrations and related pathways. The “pRRophetic” R package was applied to predict the sensitivity of administering chemotherapeutic and targeted drugs.ResultsA total of 49 anoikis-related DEGs in HCC were detected and 3 genes (EZH2, KIF18A and NQO1) were selected out to build a prognostic model. Furthermore, GO and KEGG functional enrichment analyses indicated that the difference in overall survival between risk groups was closely related to cell cycle pathway. Notably, further analyses found the frequency of tumor mutations, immune infiltration level and expression of immune checkpoints were significantly different between the two risk groups, and the results of the immunotherapy cohort showed that patients in the high-risk group have a better immune response. Additionally, the high-risk group was found to have higher sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin and gemcitabine.ConclusionThe novel signature of 3 anoikis-related genes (EZH2, KIF18A and NQO1) can predict the prognosis of patients with HCC, and provide a revealing insight into personalized treatments in HCC

    Modified gravity and its reconstruction from the universe expansion history

    We develop the reconstruction program for the number of modified gravities: scalar-tensor theory, f(R)f(R), F(G)F(G) and string-inspired, scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The known (classical) universe expansion history is used for the explicit and successful reconstruction of some versions (of special form or with specific potentials) from all above modified gravities. It is demonstrated that cosmological sequence of matter dominance, decceleration-acceleration transition and acceleration era may always emerge as cosmological solutions of such theory. Moreover, the late-time dark energy FRW universe may have the approximate or exact Λ\LambdaCDM form consistent with three years WMAP data. The principal possibility to extend this reconstruction scheme to include the radiation dominated era and inflation is briefly mentioned. Finally, it is indicated how even modified gravity which does not describe the matter-dominated epoch may have such a solution before acceleration era at the price of the introduction of compensating dark energy.Comment: LaTeX file, 24 pages, no figure, prepared for the proceedings of ERE 2006, minor correction

    Effects of Preventive Acupuncture and Moxibustion on Fat Accumulation, Blood Lipid, and Uterus E

    Objective. To observe the effect of preventive acupuncture and moxibustion on blood lipid of menopause rats. Methods. Seventy 10-month-old SD rats with estrous cycle disorders were divided into three control groups and four treatment groups (n=10/group) and another ten 3.5-month-old female SD rats were chosen as young control group. Preventive acupuncture and moxibustion were applied at Guanyuan (CV 4). Body weight growth rate has been recorded. Plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and uterus E2 level were measured. Results. Compared to young control group, plasma TC and LDL increased and uterus E2 reduced significantly in 12-month-old control group. Compared to 12-month-old control group, plasma TC and LDL level and body weight growth rate decreased while HDL level increased remarkably in preventive acupuncture 12-month-old group. Compared to 14-month-old control group, plasma TC level and body weight growth rate decreased remarkably in preventive moxibustion 14-month-old group. Conclusions. Preventive acupuncture and moxibustion can significantly decrease the plasma TG and LDL, increase the plasma HDL, and prevent fat accumulation. Our finding suggests that preventive acupuncture and moxibustion have beneficial effects on blood lipid. Different treatment effects were found between preventive acupuncture and preventive moxibustion

    Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/\psi \rightarrow \phi \pi^{0}

    Using a sample of 1.311.31 billion J/ψJ/\psi events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/\psi \rightarrow \phi\pi^{0}, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic J/ψJ/\psi decay. A clear structure is observed in the K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/c2c^2, which can be attributed to interference between J/ψ→ϕπ0J/\psi \rightarrow \phi\pi^{0} and J/ψ→K+K−π0J/\psi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0} decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of J/ψ→ϕπ0J/\psi \to \phi\pi^{0} are [2.94±0.16(stat.)±0.16(syst.)]×10−6[2.94 \pm 0.16\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.16\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6} and [1.24±0.33(stat.)±0.30(syst.)]×10−7[1.24 \pm 0.33\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.30\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-7}.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys.
