A linear speed-up theorem for cellular automata

AbstractIbarra (1985) showed that, given a cellular automaton of range 1 recognizing some language in time n+1+R(n), we can obtain another CA of range 1 recognizing exactly the same language but in time n+1+R(n)/k (k⩾2 arbitrary). Their proof proceeds indirectly (through the simulation of CAs by a special kind of sequential machines, the STMs) and we think it misses that way some of the deep intuition of the problem. We, therefore, provide here a direct proof of this result (extended to the case of CAs of arbitrary range) involving the explicit construction of a CA working in time n+1+R(n)/k. This speeded-up automaton first gathers the cells of the line k by k in n+1 steps which then enables it to start computing by “leaps” of k steps, thus completing the R(n) remaining steps in time R(n)/k. The major problem arising from the obligation to pass from one phase to the other synchronously is solved using a synchronization process derived from the solutions of the well-known “firing-squad synchronization problem” (FSSP)

Equity in Access to the Professions in the United States: What Progress in the 1980’s?

The 1980s were a decade in which great efforts were made to open the traditionally white-male-dominated prestige professions to women and minorities. Though progress was considerable in some areas for women, and some minorities, the overall picture remains ambiguous. This essay stresses the ambivalent attitudes of professional women themselves and points to some of the ideological and social implications of their substantial entry into the professions, one of the main ones being the paradox of a situation in which gender equality in the professions leads to a strengthening of class inequality.Au cours des années 1980, des efforts considérables ont été déployés pour ouvrir aux femmes et aux minorités ethniques les professions les plus prestigieuses traditionnellement dominées par les hommes blancs. Malgré les progrès réels dont ont bénéficié les femmes, et certaines minorités, dans certains domaines, le bilan global demeure incertain. L'article souligne le caractère ambivalent des attitudes des femmes concernées et fait ressortir certaines des implications idéologiques et sociales de la situation créée par leur afflux dans ces professions, entre autres le paradoxe d'un progrès dans l'égalité des sexes qui entraîne un renforcement des inégalités de classe.Reimen Jacqueline. « The American Professoriate • Priesthood or Proletariat ? » One of the most significant developments in higher education in the seventies was the unionization of college and university faculties. This essay attempts to evaluate the gains made from the late sixties to the early eighties in the aftermath of the 1980 Yeshiva ruling and discusses the ideological debate between the advocates of the meritocratic, professional model of the professoriate and those who contend that the « industrial model » of employer-employee relations can be adapted to the campus.L'émergence d'un véritable syndicalisme universitaire est un des aspects les plus frappants de l'enseignement supérieur des années soixante-dix. 1917-1918 : America’s Warring Intellectuals

Stressing the shifting international and professional affiliations of American intellectuals during the years of American participation in World War I, and focussing on the lively, and often bitter, controversies among them on the issue of the intellectual's responsibilities in wartime, this paper attempts to go beyond the static categorizing of intellectual types or moral outrage at the sight of so many intellectuals rushing to the service of bellicose passions and the interests of the state. Within a conceptual framework derived from Antonio Gramsci, Robert Brym, Magali Sarfatti Larson and Pierre Bourdieu, the individual intellectual's political behavior is seen as part of a complex, dynamic social process.Dans cette étude des intellectuels américains pendant les années de participation américaine à la Première guerre mondiale, l'accent est mis à la fois sur les accidents qui marquent leurs trajectoires professionnelles et les débats qui les opposent, souvent violemment, sur le problème de l'engagement politique de l'intellectuel en temps de guerre.
