Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii and Brucella abortus among pregnant women.
Coxiella burnetii and Brucella abortus are two intracellular bacteria implicated in zoonotic miscarriage. In the present study, C. burnetii and B. abortus seroprevalence was compared among women from London with and without miscarriage. Coxiella burnetii seroprevalence was high (4.6%, 95% CI 2.8-7.1) despite the rare apparent exposure of this urban population. Only two patients exhibited anti-B. abortus antibodies. As a result of the risk of chronic Q fever with endocarditis and/or hepatitis, the mode of Coxiella burnetii infection in this population merits further investigation
Microscopic Surface Structure of Liquid Alkali Metals
We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the
surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the
eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the
properties of an elemental liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular
diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface
roughness of the K-Na alloy follows simple capillary wave behavior with a
surface structure factor indicative of surface induced layering. Comparison of
thelow-angle tail of the K67Na33 surface structure factor with the one measured
for liquid Ga and In previously suggests that layering is less pronounced in
alkali metals. Controlled exposure of the liquid to H2 and O2 gas does not
affect the surface structure, indicating that oxide and hydride are not stable
at the liquid surface under these experimental conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, published in Phys. Rev.
Diversity in Advertisements and Brand Perception
This research project examines the relationship between representation of diversity in marketing and brand perception. The debate about whether diversity in advertisements impacts how consumers perceive and purchase from brands is ongoing. Thus, this study examines whether companies are rewarded for representing diversity in their advertisements and punished for representation that is inappropriate or insensitive. We conducted an online survey among Gettysburg College students and elicited their beliefs about the importance of diversity in marketing campaigns. We found that consumers are more likely to buy from companies that represent more racial diversity in their advertisements. The same was found for companies that represent more diversity of body types in their advertisements. The appropriateness of advertisements was also found to have an impact on the likelihood of consumers to purchase from companies, with consumers being less likely to buy from companies that have racially inappropriate or insensitive advertisements
Surface Structure of Liquid Metals and the Effect of Capillary Waves: X-ray Studies on Liquid Indium
We report x-ray reflectivity (XR) and small angle off-specular diffuse
scattering (DS) measurements from the surface of liquid Indium close to its
melting point of C. From the XR measurements we extract the surface
structure factor convolved with fluctuations in the height of the liquid
surface. We present a model to describe DS that takes into account the surface
structure factor, thermally excited capillary waves and the experimental
resolution. The experimentally determined DS follows this model with no
adjustable parameters, allowing the surface structure factor to be deconvolved
from the thermally excited height fluctuations. The resulting local electron
density profile displays exponentially decaying surface induced layering
similar to that previously reported for Ga and Hg. We compare the details of
the local electron density profiles of liquid In, which is a nearly free
electron metal, and liquid Ga, which is considerably more covalent and shows
directional bonding in the melt. The oscillatory density profiles have
comparable amplitudes in both metals, but surface layering decays over a length
scale of \AA for In and \AA for Ga. Upon controlled
exposure to oxygen, no oxide monolayer is formed on the liquid In surface,
unlike the passivating film formed on liquid Gallium.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Modeling of the Influence of Sea Ice Cycle and Langmuir Circulation on the Upper Ocean Mixed Layer Depth and Freshwater Distribution at the West Antarctic Peninsula.
The Southern Ocean is chronically undersampled due to its remoteness, harsh environment, and sea ice cover. Ocean circulation models yield significant insight into key processes and to some extent obviate the dearth of data; however, they often underestimate surface mixed layer depth (MLD), with consequences for surface water-column temperature, salinity, and nutrient concentration. In this study, a coupled circulation and sea ice model was implemented for the region adjacent to the West Antarctic Peninsula, a climatically sensitive region which has exhibited decadal trends towards higher ocean temperature, shorter sea ice season, and increasing glacial freshwater input, overlain by strong interannual variability. Hindcast simulations were conducted with different air-ice drag coefficients and Langmuir circulation parameterizations to determine the impact of these factors on MLD. Including Langmuir circulation deepened the surface mixed layer, with the deepening being more pronounced in the shelf and slope regions. Optimal selection of an air-ice drag coefficient also increased modeled MLD by similar amounts and had a larger impact in improving the reliability of the simulated MLD interannual variability. This study highlights the importance of sea ice volume and redistribution to correctly reproduce the physics of the underlying ocean, and the potential of appropriately parameterizing Langmuir circulation to help correct for biases towards shallow MLD in the Southern Ocean. The model also reproduces observed freshwater patterns in the West Antarctic Peninsula during late summer and suggests that areas of intense summertime sea ice melt can still show net annual freezing due to high sea ice formation during the winter
The opaque nascent starburst in NGC 1377: Spitzer SINGS observations
We analyze extensive data on NGC 1377 from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Within the category of nascent starbursts that we previously selected as having infrared-to-radio continuum ratios in large excess of the average and containing hot dust, NGC 1377 has the largest infrared excess yet measured. Optical imaging reveals a morphological distortion suggestive of a recent accretion event. Infrared spectroscopy reveals a compact and opaque source dominated by a hot, self-absorbed continuum (τ~ 20 in the 10μm silicate band). We provide physical evidence against nonstellar activity being the heating source. H II regions are detected through the single [Ne II] line, probing 85% of ionizing photons are suppressed by dust. The only other detected emission features are molecular hydrogen lines, arguably excited mainly by shocks, besides photodissociation regions, and weak aromatic bands. The new observations support our interpretation in terms of an extremely young starburst (<1 Myr). More generally, galaxies deficient in radio synchrotron emission are likely observed within a few Myr of the onset of a starburst and after a long quiescence, prior to the replenishment of the interstellar medium with cosmic rays. The similar infrared-radio properties of NGC 1377 and some infrared-luminous galaxies suggest that NGC 1377 constitutes an archetype that will be useful to better understand starburst evolution. Although rare locally because observed in a brief evolutionary stage, nascent starbursts may represent a nonnegligible fraction of merger-induced starbursts that dominate deep infrared counts. Since they differ dramatically from usual starburst templates, they have important consequences for the interpretation of deep surveys
Very Luminous Carbon Stars in the Outer Disk of the Triangulum Spiral Galaxy
Stars with masses in the range from about 1.3 to 3.5 Mo pass through an
evolutionary stage where they become carbon stars. In this stage, which lasts a
few Myr, these stars are extremely luminous pulsating giants. They are so
luminous in the near-infrared that just a few of them can double the integrated
luminosity of intermediate-age (0.6 to 2 Gyr) Magellanic Cloud clusters at 2.2
microns. Astronomers routinely use such near-infrared observations to minimize
the effects of dust extinction, but it is precisely in this band that carbon
stars can contribute hugely. The actual contribution of carbon stars to the
outer disk light of evolving spiral galaxies has not previously been
morphologically investigated. Here we report new and very deep near-IR images
of the Triangulum spiral galaxy M33=NGC 598, delineating spectacular arcs of
carbon stars in its outer regions. It is these arcs which dominate the
near-infrared m=2 Fourier spectra of M33. We present near-infrared photometry
with the Hale 5-m reflector, and propose that the arcs are the signature of
accretion of low metallicity gas in the outer disk of M33.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Revised version submitted to A&A Letter
Cosmic string loop distribution on all length scales and at any redshift
We analytically derive the expected number density distribution of Nambu-Goto
cosmic string loops at any redshift soon after the time of string formation to
today. Our approach is based on the Polchinski-Rocha model of loop formation
from long strings which we adjust to fit numerical simulations and complement
by a phenomenological modelling of gravitational backreaction. Cosmological
evolution drives the loop distribution towards scaling on all length scales in
both the radiation and matter era. Memory of any reasonable initial loop
distribution in the radiation era is shown to be erased well before Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis. In the matter era, the loop distribution reaches full scaling,
up to some residual loops from the radiation era which may be present for
extremely low string tension. Finally, the number density of loops below the
gravitational cutoff is shown to be scale independent, proportional to a
negative power of the string tension and insensitive to the details of the
backreaction modelling. As an application, we show that the energy density
parameter of loops today cannot exceed 10^(-5) for currently allowed string
tension values, while the loop number density cannot be less than 10^(-6) per
Mpc^3. Our result should provide a more robust basis for studying the
cosmological consequences of cosmic string loops.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, uses iopart. References added, matches published
