Variational bayes for estimating the parameters of a hidden Potts model

Hidden Markov random field models provide an appealing representation of images and other spatial problems. The drawback is that inference is not straightforward for these models as the normalisation constant for the likelihood is generally intractable except for very small observation sets. Variational methods are an emerging tool for Bayesian inference and they have already been successfully applied in other contexts. Focusing on the particular case of a hidden Potts model with Gaussian noise, we show how variational Bayesian methods can be applied to hidden Markov random field inference. To tackle the obstacle of the intractable normalising constant for the likelihood, we explore alternative estimation approaches for incorporation into the variational Bayes algorithm. We consider a pseudo-likelihood approach as well as the more recent reduced dependence approximation of the normalisation constant. To illustrate the effectiveness of these approaches we present empirical results from the analysis of simulated datasets. We also analyse a real dataset and compare results with those of previous analyses as well as those obtained from the recently developed auxiliary variable MCMC method and the recursive MCMC method. Our results show that the variational Bayesian analyses can be carried out much faster than the MCMC analyses and produce good estimates of model parameters. We also found that the reduced dependence approximation of the normalisation constant outperformed the pseudo-likelihood approximation in our analysis of real and synthetic datasets

The relationship of parental support, control attempts and power to adolescent drinking

    Get PDF
Adolescent alcohol consumption has become a topical issue with the overwhelming majority of high school students having had some experience with alcohol. However, a noticeable gap in the literature exists in relation to the influence of parental behaviors on adolescent drinking. This study examined the relationship of parental support, induction, coercion, and power to adolescent drinking level within the context of social exchange theory. A self-administered questionnaire, completed by 87 male and 104 female freshman college students, measured perceived childrearing behaviors and parental power. Adolescent drinking was scored on a six-point scale ranging from abstinence to heavy drinking. The data were trichotomized into low, medium and high levels and then analyzed by the chi square test of independence. Sex of parent and power were controlled

Oxygen ion dynamics in the Earth's ring current: Van Allen probes observations

Oxygen (O+) enhancements in the inner magnetosphere are often observed during geomagnetically active times, such as geomagnetic storms. In this study, we quantitatively examine the difference in ring current dynamics with and without a substantial O+ ion population based on almost 6 years of Van Allen Probes observations. Our results have not only confirmed previous finding of the role of O+ ions to the ring current but also found that abundant O+ ions are always present during large storms when sym-H < -60 nT without exception, whilst having the pressure ratio () between O+ and proton (H+) larger than 0.8 and occasionally even larger than 1 when L < 3. Simultaneously, the pressure anisotropy decreases with decreasing sym-H and increasing L shell. The pressure anisotropy decrease during the storm main phase is likely related to the pitch angle isotropization processes. In addition, we find that increases during the storm main phase and then decreases during the storm recovery phase, suggesting faster buildup and decay of O+ pressure compared to H+ ions, which are probably associated with some species dependent source and/or energization as well as loss processes in the inner magnetosphere.Accepted manuscrip

The X-ray Properties of z>4 Quasars

    Get PDF
We report on a search for X-ray emission from quasars with redshifts greater than four using the ROSAT public database. Our search has doubled the number of z>4 quasars detected in X-rays from 6 to 12. Most of those known prior to this work were radio-loud and X-ray selected sources; our study increases the number of X-ray detected, optically selected z>4 quasars from one to seven. We present their basic X-ray properties and compare these to those of lower redshift quasars. We do not find any evidence for strong broad-band spectral differences between optically selected z>4 quasars and those at lower redshifts.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures included, LaTeX emulateapj.sty, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa
