Children Overcoming Trauma through Trauma Informed Practices
Research indicates that children with a history of traumatic events in their lives have a significantly more difficult time focusing in the school setting than those who have experienced little to no trauma. Because of crucial brain development that occurs throughout childhood, children of trauma are more likely to have academic failures. In addition to academics, social and emotional difficulties become prevalent as children of trauma progress throughout their educational lives. Long term physical and mental health complications also follow these children into adulthood when interventions have not been implemented. Trauma informed practices allow educators to support students who have endured trauma throughout their lives. The following literature review identifies several trauma-informed programs and their use of the multi-tiered interventions to address the needs of trauma-exposed students. The programs highlighted throughout the literature review include The Neurosequential Model of Education, The Sanctuary Model, Healthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools, Collaborative Learning for Educational Achievement and Resilience, Supports for Students Exposed to Trauma, Positive Behavior Intervention Support, Trauma-Informed Positive Education, and Zones of Regulation. In addition to school interventions, there are measures that can be implemented to support not only children, but parents and families in the community through Trauma Informed Community Building. In the future, more active research on this imperative topic would be beneficial considering the information gathered in this review
Domestic Capacities for Building Post-Conflict Peace
The existing democratization and peacebuilding literature often neglects the important role the domestic realm plays in post-conflict peacebuilding. To explain why some post-conflict peacebuilding operations have a greater likelihood of success than others, some scholars have examined the impact of factors such as international coordination, external donor interest, democratic sequencing, and hostility levels. This analysis focuses on domestic capacities for building peace in the aftermath of civil conflict in order to systematically explore the relationship between the domestic sphere and peacebuilding success. Using Sambanis and Doyle’s (2006) peacebuilding triangle model, new local capacities indexes will be created and tested

Relationships between climate, growth and fisheries production in a commercially exploited marine fish
Climate variability can affect fish populations and fisheries production in numerous ways, including inducing measurable fluctuations in fish growth, condition, and fisheries production. Unfortunately, mechanisms driving these linkages are poorly understood for most exploited species, which hinders effective management. The purpose of this study was to use the Gulf Corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus), a heavily exploited marine fish in the Gulf of California, Mexico, as a model to investigate relationships between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as measured by the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI), sea surface temperature (SST), precipitation, drought as measured by the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), and river flow from the Morelos Dam with three parameters: adult fish condition, growth rate, and fisheries production. Adult fish condition was assessed by comparing annual variations in weight-length relationships of fish captured by the commercial fishery to each climate and environmental variable using an exponential model. Fish growth rate was measured using otolith chronologies for juveniles (years 0-2) and adult (years 3-10). Lastly, annual catch data from the commercial fishery was compared to each climate and environmental variable to examine relationships between climate and fisheries production. Results indicate that adult condition, juvenile growth rate and fisheries production are enhanced during El Niño conditions and increased SST. El Niño conditions during the birth year showed a positive relationship with fisheries landings at peak age of capture five years later, suggesting a possible linkage between juvenile recruitment, survivorship and future fisheries production. A weak positive relationship between river flow and growth rate in juveniles and adults was also found, which indicated that growth rate of both life history stages may be enhanced during strong El Niño years with high river flow. However, no relationship was found between precipitation and our parameters. Lastly, a positive relationship between decreased drought during the birth year and fisheries landings five years later indicated a freshwater influence on fisheries production. Our results indicate climate variability acting through El Niño events has a positive effect on growth, condition, fisheries production, and potentially juvenile recruitment suggesting the importance of both ocean climate variability and freshwater input on the Gulf Corvina.Marine Scienc
Hidden in Plain Sight: Homeless Students In America's Public Schools
Student homelessness is on the rise, with more than 1.3 million homeless students identified during the 2013-14 school year. This is a 7 percent increase from the previous year and more than double the number of homeless students in 2006-07. As high as these numbers seem, they are almost certainly undercounts.Despite increasing numbers, these students - as well as the school liaisons and state coordinators who support them - report that student homelessness remains an invisible and extremely disruptive problem.Students experiencing homelessness struggle to stay in school, to perform well, and to form meaningful connections with peers and adults. Ultimately, they are much more likely to fall off track and eventually drop out of school more often than their non-homeless peers. This study:provides an overview of existing research on homeless students, sheds light on the challenges homeless students face and the supports they say they need to succeed, reports on the challenges adults - local liaisons and state coordinators - face in trying to help homeless students, andrecommends changes in policy and practice at the school, community, state and national level to help homeless students get on a path to adult success. This is a critical and timely topic. The recent reauthorization of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides many new and stronger provisions for homeless students (effective Oct. 1, 2016); requires states, district and schools for the first time to report graduation rates for homeless students (effective beginning with the 2016-17 school year); and affirms the urgency and importance of dealing with homelessness so that all children can succeed
