Performance evaluation on hardened steel - PCBN tool pair in high speed turning
Hard turning is a new process which, with the help of ultra-hard cutting tool materials
(ceramic, c-BN, ...), enables the manufacture of finished surfaces of which the qualities
are close to those obtained by grinding. The tool materials used in that context allows us to estimate
and to compare their cutting capacities due to different stresses brought by the machining
of hard materials. The machining of 1OOCró steel in different metallurgical states show that the chip morphology
is closely linked with a balance between the workpiece material hardness and the cutting speed.
The process from orthogonal cutting to tri-dimensional cutting is studied. The study of the tool
geometry within the round tip allows us to understand well the 3D cutting, and to demonstrate
certain limits. The inventory and the study of the stresses endured by the cutting tool leads to the determination
of the tool wear rate. The wear model found points out strongly again to the balance between
the workpiece material hardness and the cutting speed
