Transport and magnetic anomalies due to A-site ionic size mismatch in LaCaBa_{x}MnO
We present results of electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and ac and dc
magnetic susceptibility on polycrystalline samples of the type
La(0.5)Ca(0.5-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) synthesized under identical heat treatment
conditions. The substitution of larger Ba ions for Ca results in a non-
monotonic variation of the curie temperature as the system evolves from a
charge ordered insulating state for x=0 to a ferromagnetic metallic state for
x=0.5. An intermediate compositino, x=0.1, interestingly exhibits
ferromagnetic. insulating behaviour with thermal hysteresis in ac chi around
the curie tem- perature (120K). The x=0.2 and 0.3 compounds exhibit
semiconducting like behavior as the temperature is lowered below 300K, with a
broad peak in rho around 80-100K: These compositions exhibit a weak increase in
rho as the temperature lowered below 30K, indicative of electron localization
effects. These compositions also undergo ferromagnetic transitions below about
200 and 235K respectively, though these are non-hysteretic; above all, for
these compositions, MR is large and conveniently measurable over the entire
tempera- ture range of measurement below Tc. This experimental finding may be
of interest from the application point of view. We infer that the A-site
ionic-size mismatch plays a crucial role in the deciding these properties.Comment: 5 pages, 6 Figures, Resubmitted with extended abstract on 26 Nov,

Three dimensional viscous analysis of a hypersonic inlet
The flow fields in supersonic/hypersonic inlets are currently being studied at NASA Lewis Research Center using 2- and 3-D full Navier-Stokes and Parabolized Navier-Stokes solvers. These tools have been used to analyze the flow through the McDonnell Douglas Option 2 inlet which has been tested at Calspan in support of the National Aerospace Plane Program. Comparisons between the computational and experimental results are presented. These comparisons lead to better overall understanding of the complex flows present in this class of inlets. The aspects of the flow field emphasized in this work are the 3-D effects, the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and the strong nonuniformities generated within the inlet
Integrated care and the working record
By default, many discussions and specifications of electronic health records or integrated care records often conceptualize the record as a passive information repository. This article presents data from a case study of work in a medical unit in a major metropolitan hospital. It shows how the clinicians tailored, re-presented and augmented clinical information to support their own roles in the delivery of care for individual patients. This is referred to as the working record: a set of complexly interrelated clinician-centred documents that are locally evolved, maintained and used to support delivery of care in conjunction with the more patient-centred chart that will be stored in the medical records department on the patient’s discharge. Implications are drawn for how an integrated care record could support the local tailorability and flexibility that underpin this working record and hence underpin practice
Meissner screening mass in two-flavor quark matter at nonzero temperature
We calculate the Meissner screening mass of gluons 4--7 in two-flavor quark
matter at nonzero temperature. To this end, we study the effective potential of
the 2SC/g2SC phases including a vector condensate . We find
that the Meissner mass becomes real at the critical temperature which is about
the half of the chemical potential mismatch. The phase diagram of the neutral
two-flavor color superconductor is presented in the plane of temperature and
coupling strength. We indicate the unstable region for gluons 4--7 on the phase
diagram.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor revisions to text, version to appear in PR
Kaon Condensation in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) Model at High Density
We demonstrate a fully self-consistent microscopic realization of a
kaon-condensed colour-flavour locked state (CFLK0) within the context of a
mean-field NJL model at high density. The properties of this state are shown to
be consistent with the QCD low-energy effective theory once the proper gauge
neutrality conditions are satisfied, and a simple matching procedure is used to
compute the pion decay constant, which agrees with the perturbative QCD result.
The NJL model is used to compare the energies of the CFLK0 state to the parity
even CFL state, and to determine locations of the metal/insulator transition to
a phase with gapless fermionic excitations in the presence of a non-zero
hypercharge chemical potential and a non-zero strange quark mass. The
transition points are compared with results derived previously via effective
theories and with partially self-consistent NJL calculations. We find that the
qualitative physics does not change, but that the transitions are slightly
lower.Comment: 21 pages, ReVTeX4. Clarified discussion and minor change
Many-Body Corrections to Charged-Current Neutrino Absorption Rates in Nuclear Matter
Including nucleon--nucleon correlations due to both Fermi statistics and
nuclear forces, we have developed a general formalism for calculating the
charged--current neutrino--nucleon absorption rates in nuclear matter. We find
that at one half nuclear density many--body effects alone suppress the rates by
a factor of two and that the suppression factors increase to 5 at
g cm. The associated increase in the neutrino--matter
mean--free--paths parallels that found for neutral--current interactions and
opens up interesting possibilities in the context of the delayed supernova
mechanism and protoneutron star cooling.Comment: 11 pages, APS REVTeX format, 1 PostScript figure, uuencoded

Numerical Toy-Model Calculation of the Nucleon Spin Autocorrelation Function in a Supernova Core
We develop a simple model for the evolution of a nucleon spin in a hot and
dense nuclear medium. A given nucleon is limited to one-dimensional motion in a
distribution of external, spin-dependent scattering potentials. We calculate
the nucleon spin autocorrelation function numerically for a variety of
potential densities and distributions which are meant to bracket realistic
conditions in a supernova core. For all plausible configurations the width of
the spin-density structure function is found to be less than the temperature.
This is in contrast with a naive perturbative calculation based on the one-pion
exchange potential which overestimates the width and thus suggests a large
suppression of the neutrino opacities by nucleon spin fluctuations. Our results
suggest that it may be justified to neglect the collisional broadening of the
spin-density structure function for the purpose of estimating the neutrino
opacities in the deep inner core of a supernova. On the other hand, we find no
indication that processes such as axion or neutrino pair emission, which depend
on nucleon spin fluctuations, are substantially suppressed beyond the
multiple-scattering effect already discussed in the literature. Aside from
these practical conclusions, our model reveals a number of interesting and
unexpected insights. For example, the spin-relaxation rate saturates with
increasing potential strength only if bound states are not allowed to form by
including a repulsive core. There is no saturation with increasing density of
scattering potentials until localized eigenstates of energy begin to form.Comment: 14 latex pages in two-column format, 15 postscript figures included,

Stochastic Model and Computational Measures of Batch Process Queuing System with Hetero Multiservers
Multiprocessor system models at present are very important and widely used in modelling transaction processing systems, communication networks, mobile networks, and flexible machine shops with groups of machines. Heterogeneous processors system with one main server and several identical servers are studied. In this paper, reconfiguration and rebooting delays are considered to study the performance measures for both bounded and unbounded system. Numerical results are presented for various performability parameters
Chromomagnetic instability in two-flavor quark matter at nonzero temperature
We calculate the effective potential of the 2SC/g2SC phases including vector
condensates () and study the gluonic phase and the
single plane-wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state at nonzero
temperature. Our analysis is performed within the framework of the gauged
Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We compute potential curvatures with respect to the
vector condensates and investigate the temperature dependence of the Meissner
masses squared of gluons of color 4--7 and 8 in the neutral 2SC/g2SC phases.
The phase diagram is presented in the plane of temperature and coupling
strength. The unstable regions for gluons 4--7 and 8 are mapped out on the
phase diagram. We find that, apart from the case of strong coupling, the
2SC/g2SC phases at low temperatures are unstable against the vector
condensation until the temperature reaches tens of MeV.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, revisions to text, published in Phys. Rev.
