Co-design of forward-control and force-feedback methods for teleoperation of an unmanned aerial vehicle

The core hypothesis of this ongoing research project is that co-designing haptic-feedback and forward-control methods for shared-control teleoperation will enable the operator to more readily understand the shared-control algorithm, better enabling him or her to work collaboratively with the shared-control technology.} This paper presents a novel method that can be used to co-design forward control and force feedback in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) teleoperation. In our method, a potential field is developed to quickly calculate the UAV's risk of collision online. We also create a simple proxy to represent the operator's confidence, using the swiftness with which the operator sends commands the to UAV. We use these two factors to generate both a scale factor for a position-control scheme and the magnitude of the force feedback to the operator. Currently, this methodology is being implemented and refined in a 2D-simulated environment. In the future, we will evaluate our methods with user study experiments using a real UAV in a 3D environment.Accepted manuscrip

Investment guidance for the Chinese medical device market

The medical device market is one of the most attractive and profitable areas in the global economy. Since China opened its doors to the world it has attracted increasing amounts of foreign investment. The Chinese medical device market is currently one of the most promising and fastest growing markets, which is the second largest market in the world with 200 billion yuan (RMB) total sales in 2013. This paper illustrates the geographical distribution of the Chinese medical device industry, combined with the location quotient (LQ) assessment, to reveal the medical device industry’s professional level and degree of concentration in each province, providing guidance for investors who are interested in medical device investment in China. The LQ and market share (MS) matrix reveals that the best investment regions in China are: Bohai Economic Rim, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta Economic Zones

Anomalous edge plasma transport, neutrals, and divertor plasma detachment

An impact of neutrals on anomalous edge plasma transport and zonal flow (ZF) is considered. As an example, it is assumed that edge plasma turbulence is driven by the resistive drift wave (RDW) instability. It is found that the actual effect of neutrals is not related to a suppression of the instability \textit{per se}, but due to an impact on the ZF. Particularly, it is shown that, whereas the neutrals make very little impact on the linear growth rate of the RDW instability, they can largely reduce the zonal flow generation in the nonlinear stage, which results in an enhancement of the overall anomalous plasma transport. Even though only RDW instability is considered, it seems that such an impact of neutrals on anomalous edge plasma transport has a very generic feature. It is conceivable that such neutral induced enhancement of anomalous plasma transport is observed experimentally in a detached divertor regime, which is accompanied by a strong increase of neutral density

JeffHEALTH: Helping East Africa Link to Health

    Get PDF
JeffHEALTH-Helping East Africa Link to Health is a student-run organization at Thomas Jefferson University dedicated to improving basic medical education and quality of life in Rwanda, which was devastated in 1994 by civil war and genocide. Working in partnership with the Rwanda Village Concept Project, a student organization at the National University of Rwanda, JeffHEALTH seeks to implement sustainable health initiatives in our partner villages. Graduate students from Thomas Jefferson University travel to Rwanda where we taught Community Health Workers from the Villages of Akarambi and Ruli the following topics: Nutrition and Vitamin Deficiencies, Family Planning, Prenatal care, HIV, Sexually Transmitted Illnesses and Hepatitis, Breast and Cervical Cancer, Diabetes, and Fistulas. We also taught two programs to children of the villages (Oral Hygiene and Soil Transmitted Helminths) and talked with young adults about Circumcision and HIV Prevention and Sex Education.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/cwicposters/1018/thumbnail.jp

In Light of China’s New Film Industry Promotion Law: Implications For Cross-Border Transactions between China and the U.S. in the Film Industry

After several years of rapid growth, the Chinese box market saw a sharp decline in revenue in 2016. One major factor was the mismatch between demand and supply in what would attract the audience and the movies actually brought to them. Large film studio failed to develop the potential market of migrant workers and rural farmers because of their detachment to their lives and thoughts. To revitalize the film industry, China issued the Film Industry Promotion Law in 2016 to promote the quality and diversity of movie production, with a focus on developing the rural box office. By taking a closer look at this new law, this note intends to analyze its impact on and implications for both Chinese and international participants in the Chinese entertainment industry
