Gender Differences of Body Composition Across Four Different Forms of Assessment

    Get PDF
The present study aimed to evaluate the differences in body composition, specifically body fat percentage (BF%), fat-free mass (FFM), and body mass index (BMI), across four forms of assessment. It was hypothesized that male subjects, on average, would display consistently lower BF% when compared to females across four body composition data collection methods, and results would be highly correlated between the four. The BOD POD acted as the present study’s gold standard due to it being one of the most accurate methods of assessing BF% (Collins et al., 1999). It was assumed that women would have a higher BF% than men on average. According to Robergs and Roberts (1997), a healthy range of body fat for women is 20% to 25%, and a healthy range of body fat for men is 10% to 15%. A BF% over 20% for men and 30% for women is considered an indication of obesity. Additionally, Akindele et al. (2016) suggested that as BMI increases there is a corresponding increase in the BF%. Females are more likely to report BF% higher than their BMI but this concept is flipped for males meaning they will report lower BF% than their BMI.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/exercise-science-research-proposal-posters/1085/thumbnail.jp

Health Journalism Internships: A Social Marketing Strategy to Address Health Disparities

    Get PDF
The USA seeks to eliminate health disparities by stimulating the rapid uptake of health-promoting behaviors within disadvantaged communities. A health journalism internship incorporates social marketing strategies to increase communities' access to cancer information, while helping the interns who are recruited from underrepresented communities gain admission to top graduate schools. Interns are taught basic health journalism skills that enable them to create immediate streams of cancer-related press releases for submission to community newspapers. Interns are charged with the social responsibility of continuing this dissemination process throughout their careers. Intermediate outcomes are measured as mediators of distal behavioral change goals

Writing a textbook: how to establish yourself as an academic author

    No full text
Textbooks are tools of the trade for many groups, for example students, teachers and researchers. Many people may have the knowledge and ability to write a textbook, but the time consuming mechanics of the whole process deters them. The aim of this book is to take the pain out of the process. It takes the reader step-by-step from the initial shaping of the idea to a detailed plan of the manuscript and a full book proposal, all based around the reader's own particular area of expertise
