Studies of Effectiveness of Commercial Home Treatment Systems
Eleven home water systems were tested representing six different types of filtering systems. Tests were made for Sulfates, Nitrates, Phosphate, Iron and Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes before and after passing through a home treatment system. All of the systems removed iron adequately but had little effect on the removal of nitrates, phosphates, sulfates or control of pH. Since none of the ground waters was contaminated by coli- forms, nothing was established regarding the effectiveness of bacterial removal by these systems
Effects of a noncoplanar biphenyldiamine on the processing and properties of addition polyimides
Addition curing polyimides, prepared from noncoplanar 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl) 4,4' diaminobiphenyl (BTDB) with various dianhydrides were evaluated as high temperature polymer matrix materials. T sub g of these polymers were measured by mechanical methods as well as by thermal mechanical analysis. Physical and mechanical properties as well as the thermo-oxidative stability of neat resins and the corresponding G40-600 graphite fiber reinforced composites were compared to that of PMR-II-50 and V-CAP-75
Photoionized features in the X-ray spectrum of Ex Hydrae
We present the first results from a long (496 ks) Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating observation of the intermediate polar EX Hydrae ( EX Hya). In addition to the narrow emission lines from the cooling post-shock gas, for the first time we have detected a broad component in some of the X-ray emission lines, namely, O VIII lambda 18.97, Mg XII lambda 8.42, Si XIV lambda 6.18, and Fe XVII lambda 16.78. The broad and narrow components have widths of similar to 1600 km s(-1) and similar to 150 km s(-1), respectively. We propose a scenario where the broad component is formed in the pre-shock accretion flow, photoionized by radiation from the post-shock flow. Because the photoionized region has to be close to the radiation source in order to produce strong photoionized emission lines from ions such as O VIII, Fe XVII, Mg XII, and Si XIV, our photoionization model constrains the height of the standing shock above the white dwarf surface. Thus, the X-ray spectrum from EX Hya manifests features of both magnetic and non-magnetic cataclysmic variables

Resilient Quantum Computation: Error Models and Thresholds
Recent research has demonstrated that quantum computers can solve certain
types of problems substantially faster than the known classical algorithms.
These problems include factoring integers and certain physics simulations.
Practical quantum computation requires overcoming the problems of environmental
noise and operational errors, problems which appear to be much more severe than
in classical computation due to the inherent fragility of quantum
superpositions involving many degrees of freedom. Here we show that arbitrarily
accurate quantum computations are possible provided that the error per
operation is below a threshold value. The result is obtained by combining
quantum error-correction, fault tolerant state recovery, fault tolerant
encoding of operations and concatenation. It holds under physically realistic
