On the Computational Complexity of Vertex Integrity and Component Order Connectivity
The Weighted Vertex Integrity (wVI) problem takes as input an -vertex
graph , a weight function , and an integer . The
task is to decide if there exists a set such that the weight
of plus the weight of a heaviest component of is at most . Among
other results, we prove that:
(1) wVI is NP-complete on co-comparability graphs, even if each vertex has
weight ;
(2) wVI can be solved in time;
(3) wVI admits a kernel with at most vertices.
Result (1) refutes a conjecture by Ray and Deogun and answers an open
question by Ray et al. It also complements a result by Kratsch et al., stating
that the unweighted version of the problem can be solved in polynomial time on
co-comparability graphs of bounded dimension, provided that an intersection
model of the input graph is given as part of the input.
An instance of the Weighted Component Order Connectivity (wCOC) problem
consists of an -vertex graph , a weight function ,
and two integers and , and the task is to decide if there exists a set
such that the weight of is at most and the weight of
a heaviest component of is at most . In some sense, the wCOC problem
can be seen as a refined version of the wVI problem. We prove, among other
results, that:
(4) wCOC can be solved in time on interval graphs,
while the unweighted version can be solved in time on this graph
class;
(5) wCOC is W[1]-hard on split graphs when parameterized by or by ;
(6) wCOC can be solved in time;
(7) wCOC admits a kernel with at most vertices.
We also show that result (6) is essentially tight by proving that wCOC cannot

Effect of age on the hemodynamic and sympathetic responses at the onset of isometric handgrip exercise.
Cardiac and peripheral vasomotor factors contribute to the rapid pressor response at the onset of isometric handgrip exercise. We tested the hypothesis that age enhances the sympathetic and vasoconstrictor response at the onset of isometric handgrip exercise so that the pressor response is maintained, despite a diminished cardiac function. Twelve young and twelve older (24 ± 3 and 63 ± 8 yr) individuals performed 20-s isometric handgrip exercise at 30, 40, or 50% of maximal voluntary contraction force. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was measured using microneurography. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cardiac output (Q) were assessed continuously by finger plethysmography and total peripheral resistance was calculated. MAP increased with the onset of handgrip; this increase was associated with handgrip intensity and was similar in both groups. Heart rate and Q increased with increasing handgrip intensity in both groups, but increases were greater in young vs. older individuals (age × handgrip intensity interaction, P \u3c 0.05). MSNA burst frequency increased (P \u3c 0.01), while MSNA burst incidence tended to increase (P = 0.06) with increasing handgrip intensity in both groups. The change in MSNA between baseline and handgrip, for both frequency and incidence, increased with increasing handgrip intensity for both groups. There was no effect of handgrip intensity or age on total peripheral resistance. The smaller heart rate and Q response during the first 20 s of handgrip exercise in older individuals was not accompanied by a greater sympathetic activation or vasoconstrictor response. However, increases in MAP were similar between groups, indicating that the pressor response at the onset of handgrip exercise is preserved with aging

A case study evaluating the use of clozapine in depression with psychotic features
The purpose of this case study was to use an evidence based medicine approach to work through an unusual way of treating a common problem. We looked at an example of an in-patient with severe refractory psychotic depression who had been resistant to treatment with a combination of antidepressant, antipsychotics, mood stabiliser, and concomitant ECT therapy. We then undertook a literature search for the use of clozapine in a patient with severe refractory depression. Although the resulting evidence was low level and thin, we felt on balance that a trial of clozapine was justified. We used a BPRS inventory to monitor her mood prior to commencing clozapine. Her mood and functional abilities were monitored as her clozapine was titrated upwards. Our patient showed a significant improvement in mood and functional abilities and a reduction in her BPRS score during this period. Her symptoms improved to the point where she was successfully discharged home on a combination of clozapine and an antidepressant. The improvement was sustained for a further two years. We thought this was an important case to highlight the limited evidence in using this successful form of treatment for a common clinical problem and that further research in this area was needed

Growth and Differentiation of the Larval Mosquito Midgut
Factors affecting larval growth and nutrition have consequences on adult fecundity. Since the mosquito larval midgut is the primary organ of digestion and nutrient absorption, factors that affect the growth and development of the midgut may have potential consequences on the reproductive potential of the adult. To gain a better understanding of mosquito midgut development the growth and metamorphic remodeling of the Aedes aegypti L. and Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae) midguts were investigated. Cytological evidence was obtained suggesting that, in both the anterior and posterior Ae. aegypti larval midgut, diploid regenerative cells give rise to new endoreplicating cells that significantly contribute to the growth and metabolism of the midgut. This hypothesis was supported by BrdU incorporation studies showing that diploid cells, as well as large and small endoreplicating cells, synthesize DNA during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars. Cytological studies of the Cx. pipiens larval midgut suggest that anterior midgut growth in this species is primarily by cell enlargement. To study metamorphic remodeling of the midgut, DNA synthesis in Ae. aegypti 4th instar midguts was followed by using 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation. During the 24 hr period after the last larval-larval molt both endoreplicating and diploid cells incorporate BrdU. After the critical weight is achieved, endoreplicating cell BrdU incorporation gradually ceases while diploid cells continue to replicate. The period of maximum diploid cell incorporation correlated with the period of maximum ecdysone titer
Radiating Shear-Free Gravitational Collapse with Charge
We present a new shear free model for the gravitational collapse of a
spherically symmetric charged body. We propose a dissipative contraction with
radiation emitted outwards. The Einstein field equations, using the junction
conditions and an ansatz, are integrated numerically. A check of the energy
conditions is also performed. We obtain that the charge delays the black hole
