    Violent Hard X-ray Variability of Mrk 421 Observed by NuSTAR in 2013 April

    The well studied blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421, zz=0.031) was the subject of an intensive multi-wavelength campaign when it flared in 2013 April. The recorded X-ray and very high energy (VHE, E>>100 GeV) γ\gamma-ray fluxes are the highest ever measured from this object. At the peak of the activity, it was monitored by the hard X-ray focusing telescope {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} ({\it NuSTAR}) and {\it Swift} X-Ray Telescope (XRT). In this work, we present a detailed variability analysis of {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Swift}-XRT observations of Mrk 421 during this flaring episode. We obtained the shortest flux doubling time of 14.01±\pm5.03 minutes, which is the shortest hard X-ray (3−-79 keV) variability ever recorded from Mrk 421 and is on the order of the light crossing time of the black hole's event horizon. A pattern of extremely fast variability events superposed on slowly varying flares is found in most of the {\it NuSTAR} observations. We suggest that these peculiar variability patterns may be explained by magnetic energy dissipation and reconnection in a fast moving compact emission region within the jet. Based on the fast variability, we derive a lower limit on the magnetic field strength of B≥0.73δ1−2/3 ν191/3B \ge 0.73 \delta_1^{-2/3} \, \nu_{19}^{1/3}~G, where δ1\delta_1 is the Doppler factor in units of 10, and ν19\nu_{19} is the characteristic X-ray synchrotron frequency in units of 101910^{19}~Hz.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, to appear in the Astrophysical Journa

    Low Power EMC Optimized Wireless Sensor Network for Air Pollution Monitoring System

    Air pollution has significant repercussion on the concentrations of constituents in atmosphere leading to consequences like global warming and acid rain. Traditional air polluting monitoring methods are expensive and bulky, to overcome this disadvantage WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) has come into existence which has advantage of being small, easy to setup, inexpensive and provide real time monitoring of data. In this paper, modular wireless sensor architecture for pollution monitoring system that measures the level of carbon monoxide, particulate Matter, nitrogen-di-oxide and sulphur-di-oxide in environment and sends the measured data to server is proposed. The proposed system is designed for extremely low power operation which monitors the pollutants level and sends the data to server via GPRS and can be used in secured places like military and defence.     Effect of different phosphorus sources applied with phosphate solubilizing bacteria on bio-geochemical properties and phosphorus release pattern in vertisol

    Various phosphorus (P) fertilizers are used for crop production in different types of soil. But there is a knowledge gap in choosing the right source and form of  P fertilizers to enhance the applied fertilizer use efficiency. An experiment was taken to identify the best phosphorus source and its effectiveness as a source of P in vertisol to unravel this problem of selecting suitable P fertilizer. With this background, an incubation experiment was conducted under laboratory condition to determine the phosphorus release pattern of different P sources [Single Super Phosphate (SSP), Rock Phosphate (RP), Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), Nano phosphate (Nano P), Phosphocompost (PC)] applied with phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and their influence on biogeochemical properties in vertisol.  Experimental results emphasized that P release from different sources was influenced by soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic carbon (SOC), and microbial population. Applied P sources significantly(p=0.05) influenced the CEC, SOC, and microbial population except for soil pH and Ec. The maximum release in available P was obtained at 30 and 60 days after incubation with SSP +PSB  (35.8 and 40.1 mg kg-1) and Nano P + PSB (33.9 and 38.6 mg kg-1) applied treatments, respectively.Whereas at 90 days after incubation Nano P + PSB (42.3 mg kg-1) and Phosphocompost + PSB (40.4 mg kg-1) treatments recorded the maximum P availability and minimum P (15.2, 13.9 and 11.8 mg kg -1) release was noticed in the control treatment throughout the period of incubation. It was evident that SSP or Nano P along with PSB application might be the best P source for Vertisol
