Postambulatory Hand Swelling (Big Hand Syndrome): Prevalence, Demographics, and Association with Dog Walking

Introduction. Postambulatory hand swelling (PAHS) seems to be common in the general population. There are few mention in the medical literature. The objective were (1) to identify prevalence; (2) to compare gender and age groups; (3) to determine if dog owners and walkers are more or less prone. Materials and Methods. 1009 semirandomly surveys were completed from walkers. Age, gender, and dog ownership were assessed. We discussed, among dog owners, whether or not they walk their dog regularly, whether or not they notice swollen hands after walking, and, if so, if the swelling resolves over 24 hours or persists. Results. 699 females and 410 males, among whom, 28.9% of females but only 16.3% of males reported PAHS (P < 0.001). Surprisingly, those with swelling were statistically younger than those without (49.2 versus 52.8 years, P = 0.003), and dog owners were more likely than nonowners to report swelling (28.1% versus 21.7%; P = 0.015). In terms of persistent swelling, this was observed in twice the percentage of females as males (13.3 versus 6.5%) and tended to involve older subjects (54.0 versus 48.8 years), but with no statistical difference significance. Conclusions. PAHS is a relatively common phenomenon, seemingly more common in females

O descarte de medicamentos: uma questão ambiental

O presente artigo foi desenvolvido para dar suporte e trazer à tona a questão do descarte de medicamentos, tendo em vista a falta de informações relativas aos procedimentos inerentes a questão. Sabe-se que devido as suas características de periculosidade, os medicamentos devem ser tratados de formas diferenciadas, específicas e eficazes, evitando assim a contaminação dos recursos naturais, já que podem ser encontrados elementos químicos bioacumulativos e outros que podem acarretar danos a saúde pública. O descarte de medicamento será visto em dois ângulos, o aplicado aos estabelecimentos destinados aos serviços de saúde e aos consumidores que os adquirem por meio do comércio. Serão apresentados ainda os requisitos legais aplicáveis, como normas, resoluções, leis e decretos que norteiam os deveres da sociedade perante a questão, bem como a falta destes. Os estabelecimentos de serviços de saúde já possuem a obrigatoriedade de elaborar um plano de gerenciamento dos resíduos de saúde gerados em suas unidades. O principal problema encontra-se na extensão do uso dos medicamentos aos consumidores domésticos, que por falta de instrução e de políticas adequadas não sabem como ou onde descartar aqueles considerados inservíveis, e, portanto, serão postadas algumas práticas que estão mascarando a falta de requisitos legais e alguns projetos de lei que buscam aprovação para a finalização do ciclo de vida dos medicamentos. Para atingir os objetivos propostos, foram feitas pesquisas como consulta a artigos em revistas, legislações, dissertações, teses, projetos, e matérias pela INTERNET, que abordam a questão do medicamento como resíduo, a sua devida destinação final e as alternativas para problemas ainda não solucionados

A new system for animal products traceability and authentication: use of DNA analysis of natural tracers and example of application to dry cured hams

AbstractA few DNA based approaches have been developed to trace animal products from the farm to the consumer "fork". These approaches make use of the animal DNA that can be recovered during all steps of the production chain directly as part of the products that are obtained from them. This direct link between the animals and the products can be assessed using DNA markers like, for example, single nucleotide polymorphisms and microsatellites, for individual or population based (breed) traceability systems. However, these methods, in general, rely on the possibility to constitute banks of animal biological samples for critical/important steps of the production chain and analyse a large number of samples (individual traceability) or to identify breed/population multilocus informative markers or few specific mutations that can distinguish the breed/population of origin (breed traceability). Oculomotor nerve palsy associated with bortezomib in a patient with multiple myeloma: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Bortezomib is a proteasome inhibitor used in the treatment of multiple myeloma. A newly recognized oculomotor nerve palsy related to bortezomib is described.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 54-year-old Caucasian woman with immunoglobulin G kappa multiple myeloma on single-agent bortezomib given by intravenous push once weekly developed isolated unilateral partially reversible left sided oculomotor nerve palsy during the first cycle of treatment. All the essential diagnostic tests that were carried out excluded all other possible causes. There was a positive dechallenge-rechallenge test. Management was by withdrawal of bortezomib and empirical dexamethazone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its kind in the literature.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case illustrates the probable association between oculomotor nerve palsy and bortezomib, and generates a hypothesis of whether bortezomib can cross the blood-brain barrier or not.</p
