Interlayer Registry Determines the Sliding Potential of Layered Metal Dichalcogenides: The case of 2H-MoS2
We provide a simple and intuitive explanation for the interlayer sliding
energy landscape of metal dichalcogenides. Based on the recently introduced
registry index (RI) concept, we define a purely geometrical parameter which
quantifies the degree of interlayer commensurability in the layered phase of
molybdenum disulphide (2HMoS2). A direct relation between the sliding energy
landscape and the corresponding interlayer registry surface of 2H-MoS2 is
discovered thus marking the registry index as a computationally efficient means
for studying the tribology of complex nanoscale material interfaces in the
wearless friction regime.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Nonlinear waves in hyperbolic metamaterials: focus on solitons and rogues
The investigation of hyperbolic metamaterials, shows that metal layers that are part of graphene structures, and also types I and II layered systems, are readily controlled. Since graphene is a nicely conducting sheet it can be easily managed. The literature only eveals a, limited, systematic, approach to the onset of nonlinearity, especially for the methodology based around the famous nonlinear Schrödinger equation [NLSE]. This presentation reveals nonlinear outcomes involving solitons sustained by the popular, and more straightforward to fabricate, type II hyperbolic metamaterials. The NLSE for type II metatamaterials is developed and nonlinear, non-stationary diffraction and dispersion in such important, and active, planar hyperbolic metamaterials is developed. For rogue waves in metamaterials only a few recent numerical studies exist. The basic model assumes a uniform background to which is added a time-evolving perturbation in order to witness the growth of nonlinear waves out of nowhere. This is discussed here using a new NLSE appropriate to hyperbolic metamaterials that would normally produce temporal solitons. The main conclusion is that new pathways for rogue waves can emerge in the form of Peregrine solitons (and near-Peregrines) within a nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterial, based upon double negative guidelines, and where, potentially, magnetooptic control could be practically exerted
Two-Photon 2s<->1s Transitions during Recombination of Hydrogen in the Universe
Based on the standard cosmological model, we calculate the correction to the
rate of two-photon 2s1s transitions in the hydrogen atom under primordial
hydrogen plasma recombination conditions that arises when the induced
transitions under equilibrium background radiation with a blackbody spectrum
and plasma recombination radiation are taken into account.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure

Homoclinic Tangle Bifurcations and Edge Stochasticity in Diverted Tokamaks
OAK-B135 The boundary and pedestal region of a poloidally diverted tokamak is particularly susceptible to the onset of vacuum magnetic field stochasticity due to small non-axisymmetric resonant perturbations. Recent calculations of the separatrix topology in diverted tokamaks, when subjected to small magnetic perturbations, show the existence of complex invariant manifold structures known as homoclinic tangles. These structures appear above a relatively low perturbation threshold that depends on certain equilibrium shape parameters. Homoclinic tangles represent a splitting of the unperturbed separatrix into stable and unstable invariant manifolds associated with each X-point (hyperbolic point). The manifolds that make up homoclinic tangles set the boundaries that prescribe how stochastic field line trajectories are organized i.e., how field lines from the inner domain of the unperturbed separatrix mix and are transported to plasma facing surfaces such as divertor target plates and protruding baffle structures. Thus, the topology of these tangles determines which plasma facing components are most likely to interact with escaping magnetic field lines and the parallel heat and particle flux they carry
Enhanced inverse bremsstrahlung heating rates in a strong laser field
Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory
electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small
angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron
trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This
leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse
bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as
Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to
the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on
scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been
examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic
electron distribution functions. A new scaling of the inverse bremsstrahlung
heating rate with drift velocity and laser intensity is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
Cooperation and Self-Regulation in a Model of Agents Playing Different Games
A simple model for cooperation between "selfish" agents, which play an
extended version of the Prisoner's Dilemma(PD) game, in which they use
arbitrary payoffs, is presented and studied. A continuous variable,
representing the probability of cooperation, [0,1], is assigned to
each agent at time . At each time step a pair of agents, chosen at
random, interact by playing the game. The players update their using a
criteria based on the comparison of their utilities with the simplest estimate
for expected income. The agents have no memory and use strategies not based on
direct reciprocity nor 'tags'. Depending on the payoff matrix, the systems
self-organizes - after a transient - into stationary states characterized by
their average probability of cooperation and average equilibrium
per-capita-income . It turns out that the model
exhibit some results that contradict the intuition. In particular, some games
which - {\it a priory}- seems to favor defection most, may produce a relatively
high degree of cooperation. Conversely, other games, which one would bet that
lead to maximum cooperation, indeed are not the optimal for producing
cooperation.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, keybords: Complex adaptive systems, Agent-based

Gyrotropic impact upon negatively refracting surfaces
Surface wave propagation at the interface between different types of gyrotropic materials and an isotropic negatively refracting medium, in which the relative permittivity and relative permeability are, simultaneously, negative is investigated. A general approach is taken that embraces both gyroelectric and gyromagnetic materials, permitting the possibility of operating in either the low GHz, THz or the optical frequency regimes. The classical transverse Voigt configuration is adopted and a complete analysis of non-reciprocal surface wave dispersion is presented. The impact of the surface polariton modes upon the reflection of both plane waves and beams is discussed in terms of resonances and an example of the influence upon the Goos–Hänchen shift is given
An analysis of integrative outcomes in the Dayton peace negotiations
The nature of the negotiated outcomes of the eight issues of the Dayton Peace Agreement was studied in terms of their integrative and distributive aspects. in cases where integrative elements were Sound, further analysis was conducted by concentrating on Pruitt's five types of integrative solutions: expanding the pie, cost cutting, non-specific compensation, logrolling, and bridging. The results showed that real world international negotiations can arrive at integrative agreements even when they involve redistribution of resources tin this case the redistribution of former Yugoslavia). Another conclusion was that an agreement can consist of several distributive outcomes and several integrative outcomes produced by different kinds of mechanisms. Similarly, in single issues more than one mechanism can be used simultaneously. Some distributive bargaining was needed in order to determine how much compensation was required. Finally, each integrative formula had some distributive aspects as well
