1. The hormonal coordinating mechanism of the sexual process in Achlya is briefly reviewed. 2. A technique is described for culturing the female plant of Achlya bisexualis in sufficient quantity to furnish material for the chemical study of hormone A. 3. A modification of the biological assay for hormone A is described. 4. Many of the properties of hormone A have been determined: (a) solubilities in common organic solvents, (b) adsorption, (c) stability, (d) inactivation, and (e) reactions with certain reagents. 5. A procedure is described whereby enormous enrichment of the active principle has been achieved

Halogen occultation experiment (HALOE) optical witness-plate program

An optical witness plate program was implemented to monitor buildup of molecular contamination in the clean room during the assembly and testing of the Halogen Occulation Experiment (HALOE) instrument. Travel plates to monitor molecular contamination when the instrument is not in the clean room are also measured. The instrument technique is high-resolution transmission spectroscopy in the 3 micron spectral region using a Fourier transform spectrometer. Witness specimens of low index of refraction, infrared transmitting material are used for contaminant monitoring and for spectral signature analysis. Spectral signatures of possible molecular contamination are presented. No condensible volatile material contamination of HALOE optical witness specimens have yet been found

Management of the Difficult Hypertensive Patient

Hypertension, while usually easily handled, can in certain patients present difficult problems in management. A history of stroke sometimes creates doubt as to the advisability of lowering the blood pressure as this might reduce flow to the brain, causing the patient to have another stroke. It is recognized that severe hypertensives clearly do better if they are treated, but the mild-to-moderate hypertensive patient with a history of stoke is a more difficult problem, and uncertainty about proper management has been so great that a large multicenter clinical trial – randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled – of 452 patients was done by the Stroke-Hypertensive Study group, and its results reported in 1974. All 452 patients had a history of a previous stroke and all had mild-to-moderate diastolic hypertension. This study showed that long-term outpatient treatment of the blood pressure neither caused nor prevented a second stroke. Other benefits such as a reduction in the number of episodes of congestive heart failure were evident in the treated group. It would seem, then, that patients with a history of stroke should be treated for their diastolic hypertension, unless there are other contraindications

Missouri S&T Engineering Management Capstone Senior Design: Lessons Learned and Challenges to Come

A more traditional, capstone senior design course was recently added as a requirement for Engineering Management undergraduates in the Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Department at Missouri S&T. The case studies course that had served that purpose was deemed to be insufficient for ABET accreditation purposes by department faculty. The most recent 2008 accreditation visit for the department verified this belief and caused the department to launch the new class earlier than anticipated to prove the class would be taught and that it would meet required standards. Thus, no weaknesses or concerns were noted in this area in the final ABET report. This course has been offered for four consecutive semesters and has provided much useful information related to the departments overall curriculum and how it prepares students for entry into industrial work settings. This paper will discuss the development of the course, the challenges that were faced and will be faced as the course continues to develop, and lessons learned thus far. The paper will also discuss how department alumni can be essential partners in this process both in terms of identifying projects, and in assessing student strengths and weaknesses. Final conclusions will be offered that may be beneficial to other Engineering Management programs

Engineering Management at UMR -- Alumni Voices

The Department of Engineering Management at the University of Missouri-Rolla is among the oldest of its kind in the United States, and has over 2000 Bachelors level alumni graduates. The Department will undergo ABET accreditation under the new assessment based criteria in the fall of 2002. The new criteria specify that engineering programs should seek to continuously improve their degree offerings through an ongoing assessment process that includes constituent input. Our own department has specified undergraduate alumni as one of the prime or key constituents that will be queried for input into our own processes. For the first time in our history, we sent a detailed survey to all of our undergraduate alumni. We also solicited salary information that could be submitted anonymously. The results from the survey will be presented and discussed

Demographic and Management Factors Affecting the Adoption and Perceived Yield Benefit of Winter Cover Crops in the Southeast

The inclusion of cover crops in cropping systems brings direct and indirect costs and benefits. Farmers will adopt and utilize cover crops as long as the perceived benefit of using them is positive. This paper examines the demographic and management factors affecting the adoption and perceived benefit (in terms of improved crop yield) of using winter annual cover crops. A double selectivity model of cover crop adoption and perceived yield gain was estimated using survey data of Alabama farmers examining cover crop use and management. Here their growth cones diverge from each other as G turns and extends anteriorly and C turns and extends posteriorly.
