Design and breadboard evaluation of the SPS reference phase control system concept
The total breadboard system includes one pilot transmitter, one pilot receiver, nine phase distribution units, and two power transponders. With this complement of equipment, segments of a typical phase distribution system can be assembled to facilitate the evaluation of significant system parameters. The achievable accuracy of a large phase distribution system, the sensitivity of the system to parameter variations, and the limitations of commercially available components in such applications were determined
An optimality criterion for sizing members of heated structures with temperature constraints
A thermal optimality criterion is presented for sizing members of heated structures with multiple temperature constraints. The optimality criterion is similar to an existing optimality criterion for design of mechanically loaded structures with displacement constraints. Effectiveness of the thermal optimality criterion is assessed by applying it to one- and two-dimensional thermal problems where temperatures can be controlled by varying the material distribution in the structure. Results obtained from the optimality criterion agree within 2 percent with results from a closed-form solution and with results from a mathematical programming technique. The thermal optimality criterion augments existing optimality criteria for strength and stiffness related constraints and offers the possibility of extension of optimality techniques to sizing structures with combined thermal and mechanical loading
Electrical and Magnetic behaviour of PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor
The superconducting and ground state samples of PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 and PrFeAsO
have been synthesised via easy and versatile single step solid state reaction
route. X-ray & Reitveld refine parameters of the synthesised samples are in
good agreement to the earlier reported value of the structure. The ground state
of the pristine compound (PrFeAsO) exhibited a metallic like step in
resistivity below 150K followed by another step at 12K. The former is
associated with the spin density wave (SDW) like ordering of Fe spins and later
to the anomalous magnetic ordering for Pr moments. Both the resistivity
anomalies are absent in case of superconducting PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample. Detailed
high field (up to 12Tesla) electrical and magnetization measurements are
carried out for superconducting PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample. The PrFeAsO0.8F0.2
exhibited superconducting onset (Tconset) at around 47K with Tc({\rho} =0) at
38K. Though the Tconset remains nearly invariant, the Tc({\rho} =0) is
decreased with applied field, and the same is around 23K under applied field of
12Tesla. The upper critical field (Hc2) is estimated from the Ginzburg Landau
equation (GL) fitting, which is found to be ~ 182Tesla. Critical current
density (Jc) being calculated from high field isothermal magnetization (MH)
loops with the help of Beans critical state model, is found to be of the order
of 103 A/cm2. Summarily, the superconductivity characterization of single step
synthesised PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor is presented.Comment: 15 Pages Text + Fig
On Direct Steelmaking for Minisector using an Innovative process Combination
In contrast with large integrated plants which employ oxygen steelmaking for refining the blast furnace hot metal, the minimills rely on electric arc furnaces for melting scrap and refining the liquid metal into steel. Further, minimills are gaining advantage in view of the continued dependence of the blast furnace route on expe-nsive coke whose production (coke melting)is becoming environment unfriendly. One of the several dominating factors responsible for the increasing trend of minimills has been their ability to use direct reduced iron in place of steel scrap and equally significant is their versat-ality in terms of their products. Direct ironmaking which uses coal and ore directly, will eliminate the need for coking coals, coke making, agglemeration etc., thus resulting into lower capital costs and environmental problems
Electronic phase separation in the rare earth manganates, (La1-xLnx)0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (Ln = Nd, Gd and Y)
All the three series of manganates showsaturation magnetization
characteristic of ferromagnetism, with the ferromagnetic Tc decreasing with
increasing in x up to a critical value of x, xc (xc = 0.6, 0.3, 0.2
respectively for Nd, Gd, Y). For x > xc, the magnetic moments are considerably
smaller showing a small increase around TM, the value of TM decreasing slightly
with increase in x or decrease in . The ferromagnetic compositions (x xc)
show insulator-metal (IM) transitions, while the compositions with x > xc are
insulating. The magnetic and electrical resistivity behavior of these
manganates is consistent with the occurrence of phase separation in the
compositions around xc, corresponding to a critical average radius of the
A-site cation, , of 1.18 A. Both Tc and TIM increase linearly when < rA
> > or x xc as expected of a homogenous ferromagnetic phase. Both Tc
and TM decrease linearly with the A-site cation size disorder at the A-site as
measured by the variance s2. Thus, an increase in s2 favors the insulating AFM
state. Percolative conduction is observed in the compositions with > <
rAc >. Electron transport properties in the insulating regime for x > xc
conforms to the variable range hopping mechanism. More interestingly, when x >
xc, the real part of dielectric constant (e') reaches a high value (104-106) at
ordinary temperatures dropping to a very small (~500) value below a certain
temperature, the value of which decreases with decreasing frequency.Comment: 27 pages; 11 figures, Submitted to J.Phys:Condens Matte
QoS Constrained Optimal Sink and Relay Placement in Planned Wireless Sensor Networks
We are given a set of sensors at given locations, a set of potential
locations for placing base stations (BSs, or sinks), and another set of
potential locations for placing wireless relay nodes. There is a cost for
placing a BS and a cost for placing a relay. The problem we consider is to
select a set of BS locations, a set of relay locations, and an association of
sensor nodes with the selected BS locations, so that number of hops in the path
from each sensor to its BS is bounded by hmax, and among all such feasible
networks, the cost of the selected network is the minimum. The hop count bound
suffices to ensure a certain probability of the data being delivered to the BS
within a given maximum delay under a light traffic model. We observe that the
problem is NP-Hard, and is hard to even approximate within a constant factor.
For this problem, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm
(SmartSelect) based on a relay placement algorithm proposed in our earlier
work, along with a modification of the greedy algorithm for weighted set cover.
We have analyzed the worst case approximation guarantee for this algorithm. We
have also proposed a polynomial time heuristic to improve upon the solution
provided by SmartSelect. Our numerical results demonstrate that the algorithms
provide good quality solutions using very little computation time in various
randomly generated network scenarios
Density and ultrasonic velocity measurements in hexyloxybenzylidene phenylazoaniline
The temperature variation of density and ultrasonic velocity of the liquid crystal hexyloxybenzylidene phenylazoaniline are reported. The density across the smectic A-smectic B transition is more predominant than the other transitions. The density variation with temperature and the calculated thermal expansion coefficients suggest that the transitions isotropic liquid-nematic, nematic-smectic A and smectic A-smectic B are of first order. Anomalous behaviour of ultrasonic velocity is observed across the isotropic liquid-nematic transition and prominent dips in velocity are observed at the nematic-smectic A and smectic A-smectic B transitions. The adiabatic compressibility (βad) Rao number (Ra) and molar compressibility (B) are estimated using the experimental density and ultrasonic velocity
Search for gamma rays of energy 10(15) eV from Cygnus X-3
Finite flux of excess radiation of energy 10 to the 15th power has been reported by two groups from the direction of Cygnus X-3, with the characteristic periodicity of 4.8 hrs. Samorski and Stamm find that the muon content of the showers generated by this excess radiation is about 77% of that in normal cosmic ray showers, whereas the expectation for gamma ray showers is less than 10%. It is thus difficult to understand the nature of the radiation arriving from the direction of Cygnus X-3. Samorski and Stamm measured the muon densities close to the core (approx. 10 m), where contamination due to other components is severe. Even though this does not explain the high ratio of muon densities, measurements should be carried out away from the core to establish the nature of the radiation. In order to establish the signal from Cygnus X-3 and its muon content with better statistical significance, an extensive air shower array, specifically designed for this purpose was operated at Kolar Gold Fields (longitude: 78 deg .3 E; latitude: + 12 deg .95; atmospheric depth: 920 q/square centimeters) since September, 1984. The details of the array and the accuracy of arrival direction measurements are discussed
