    Stage-oriented Comprehensive Acupuncture Treatment plus Rehabilitation Training for Apoplectic Hemiplegia

    ObjectiveTo study the effect of stage-oriented comprehensive acupuncture treatment plus rehabilitation training for the recovery of apoplectic hemiplegia.MethodsThe 60 cases of acute apoplectic hemiplegia were divided randomly into the treatment and control groups with 30 in each. Based on the routine medication, acupuncture combined with modern rehabilitation techniques was applied for the treatment group, while only rehabilitation treatment for the control group. Before and three months after treatment, the evaluation was done on the motor function and daily life ability for both groups respectively with simplified Fugl-Meyer Evaluation and modified Barthel index.ResultsThe therapeutic effect of treatment group was significantly superior to that of the control group (P<0.05).ConclusionsBased on Brunnstrom's theory of six-stage in the recovery of hemiplegia, the effect of stage-oriented comprehensive acupuncture therapy combined with rehabilitation training is very good, helpful in raising the daily life ability of patients

    Polysorbate cationic synthetic vesicle for gene delivery

    Synthetic nonionic surfactant vesicles (niosomes) are a colloidal system with closed bilayer structures, displaying distinct advantages in stability and cost compared with liposomes. In this article, polysorbate cationic niosomes (PCNs) were developed as gene carriers. The PCNs comprised nonionic surfactants (i.e., polysorbates) and a cationic cholesterol, and were synthesized using a film hydration method. The niosomes thus prepared possessed a regular morphology, and a particle size of 100 ∼ 200 nm, and a zeta potential of +30 ∼ 45 mV. The PCNs showed great physical stability over the course of 4 weeks at room temperature. The binding capacity of PCNs toward oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) was assessed by a gel retardation approach, which demonstrated that the ionic complexes were formed when ± charge ratio reached to 4 or greater. Gene transfer study showed that the PCNs exhibited a high efficiency in mediating cellular uptake and transferred DNA expression. Based on these findings, PCNs may offer the potential to function as an effective gene delivery system. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Intrathecal Pump Implantation in the Cisterna Magna for Treating Intractable Cancer Pain

    A 54-year-old male patient with postoperative axillary lymph node, intrapulmonary, intracranial, and cervical spine metastases of left liver cancer was suffering from severe, persistent, and pricking pain in the right dorsal shoulder and right arm since 3 months. The drug dose of the fentanyl transdermal patch was gradually increased after admission and an adjuvant analgesic was also included, but neither treatment alleviated the pain. It was gradually alleviated after intramedullary analgesic infusion through intrathecal pump implantation in cistern magna. Terminally ill patients often have the desire to spend their remaining time at home, which however becomes a challenge in the face of refractory pain. At present, no palliative chemoradiation or ablative or stimulant neurosurgical options are available to manage pain in cancer patients. Based on the findings of this report, we concluded that an intramedullary drug infusion system can have a significant analgesic effect in patients with cervical metastasis and refractory cancer pain

    Synthesis of Scutellarein Derivatives with a Long Aliphatic Chain and Their Biological Evaluation against Human Cancer Cells

    Scutellarin is the major active flavonoid extracted from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Erigeron breviscapus (Vant.) Hand-Mazz., which is widely used in China. Recently, accumulating evidence has highlighted the potential role of scutellarin and its main metabolite scutellarein in the treatment of cancer. To explore novel anticancer agents with high efficiency, a series of new scutellarein derivatives with a long aliphatic chain were synthesized, and the antiproliferative activities against Jurkat, HCT-116 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines were assessed. Among them, compound 6a exhibited the strongest antiproliferative effects on Jurkat (IC50 = 1.80 μM), HCT-116 (IC50 = 11.50 μM) and MDA-MB-231 (IC50 = 53.91 μM). In particular, 6a even showed stronger antiproliferative effects than the positive control NaAsO2 on Jurkat and HCT-116 cell lines. The results showed that a proper long aliphatic chain enhanced the antiproliferative activity of scutellarein

    Epilepsy is one of the most widespread serious neurological disorders, and an aetiological explanation has not been fully identified. In recent decades, a growing body of evidence has highlighted the influential role of autoimmune mechanisms in the progression of epilepsy. The hygiene hypothesis draws people’s attention to the association between gut microbes and the onset of multiple immune disorders. It is also believed that, in addition to influencing digestive system function, symbiotic microbiota can bidirectionally and reversibly impact the programming of extraintestinal pathogenic immune responses during autoimmunity. Herein, we investigate the concept that the diversity of parasitifer sensitivity to commensal microbes and the specific constitution of the intestinal microbiota might impact host susceptibility to epilepsy through promotion of Th17 cell populations in the central nervous system (CNS)
