Freshwater Mollusks Survive Fish Gut Passage
Freshwater mollusks figure prominently in the diets of humpback whitefish (Coregonus pidschian) and broad whitefish (C. nasus), two benthic-feeding coregonid species. A recent examination of pea clams (Sphaeriidae), valve snails (Valvatidae), and pond snails (Lymnaeidae) from the lower digestive tracts of these fish found that many of the mollusks were alive. Survival completely through gut passage would indicate a dispersal mechanism for freshwater mollusks that has not been previously recognized. A field investigation was conducted with wild-caught humpback and broad whitefish to test the hypothesis that clams and snails are capable of surviving complete gut passage. Wild fish were captured alive and held in collection totes to obtain feces samples. Pea clams and valve snails were abundant in fish feces, and pond snails were present but not abundant. An average of 483 pea clams and 833 valve snails per fish were observed to have survived complete gut passage, while only a single surviving pond snail was found. These findings suggest that fish may play an important role in the dispersal of freshwater mollusks within freshwater systems.Les mollusques d’eau douce constituent une partie imposante du régime alimentaire du corégone à bosse (Coregonus pidschian) et du corégone tschir (C. nasus), deux corégonidés à alimentation benthique. L’analyse récente de pisidies (Sphaeriidae), de valvatidés (Valvatidae) et de lymnéidés (Lymnaeidae) provenant du tractus digestif inférieur de ces poissons a permis de constater que grand nombre de ces mollusques étaient toujours en vie. Le fait d’avoir entièrement survécu dans le passage digestif porterait à croire qu’il s’agirait là d’un mécanisme de dispersion des mollusques d’eau douce qui n’a jamais encore été reconnu. Une étude sur le terrain a été réalisée au moyen de corégones à bosse et de corégones tschir afin de mettre à l’épreuve l’hypothèse selon laquelle les pisidies, les valvatidés et les lymnéidés sont capables de survivre à travers tout le passage digestif. Des poissons sauvages ont été capturés en vie et conservés dans des sacs de prélèvement dans le but de recueillir des échantillons de fèces. Les pisidies et les valvatidés abondaient dans les fèces des poissons, tandis que les lymnéidés ne s’y retrouvaient pas en abondance. En moyenne, 483 pisidies et 833 valvatidés ayant survécu à travers le passage digestif ont été observés dans chaque poisson, tandis qu’un seul lymnéidé avait survécu. Ces constatations laissent croire que les poissons pourraient jouer un rôle important dans la dispersion des mollusques d’eau douce au sein des systèmes d’eau douce
Migratory patterns of Yukon River inconnu as determined with otolith microchemistry and radio telemetry
Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2000Migratory patterns of Yukon River inconnu Stenodus leucichthys were evaluated using otolith aging and microchemical techniques and radio telemetry. Research was conducted each fall between 1997 and 1999, on inconnu captured at a study site 1,200 river km from the Bering Sea. Biological data were collected to establish maturity and spawning condition. Sagital otoliths were analyzed optically to determine age distribution, and microchemically to determine amphidromy. Inconnu were tagged with radio transmitters and located in upstream spawning destinations. Inconnu captured at the study site were uniformly large, mature fish preparing to spawn. Age estimates ranged from 7 to 28 years. Microchemical analyses suggested that the population was amphidromous rather than freshwater only. Preliminary testing of radio transmitter attachment methods showed that the internal method (pushed through the esophagus into the stomach) was superior to the external method (attached behind the dorsal fin) for use with migrating inconnu. Most radio-tagged inconnu were located during their spawning time in a common region of the Yukon River. Inconnu captured at the study site each fall were mature fish engaged in a spawning migration that originated in the lower Yukon River or associated estuary regions, and continued towards a common spawning destination in the Yukon River, approximately 1,700 river km from the sea
Hybrid digital-analog computer parallel processor
Describes a hybrid digital-analog computer parallel processing apparatus wherein a template circuit, or multiplicity thereof, is connected to receive parallel digital inputs. Each template circuit has controlled current sources with control gates connected respectively to parallel digital inputs. Current subsources for each pixel normally have programmable current output and “0” or “1” responses. Each template circuit has a current summing device for algebraically adding the current outputs of current sources, while a greatest value is detected at a comparator which may have a ramp signal applied to another input thereby identifying which template produced a maximum indication from the same parallel inputs. A self-calibrating feedback controlled current generator supplies all current sources on a chip making it possible to generate a known comparator input independent of IC resistivity or other parameters. The value of the indication of other templates may also be determined by the time relation of comparator output signals. If templates of the apparatus represent printed character correlation data, the output of the processor would identify the template with maximum indication and character with highest probability from a set of pixel inputs. Similar apparatus can be cascaded to first identify details in a scene and then match such detail charts with second stage templates
Normalization of Gravitational Acceleration Models
Unlike the uniform density spherical shell approximations of Newton, the con- sequence of spaceflight in the real universe is that gravitational fields are sensitive to the nonsphericity of their generating central bodies. The gravitational potential of a nonspherical central body is typically resolved using spherical harmonic approximations. However, attempting to directly calculate the spherical harmonic approximations results in at least two singularities which must be removed in order to generalize the method and solve for any possible orbit, including polar orbits. Three unique algorithms have been developed to eliminate these singularities by Samuel Pines [1], Bill Lear [2], and Robert Gottlieb [3]. This paper documents the methodical normalization of two1 of the three known formulations for singularity-free gravitational acceleration (namely, the Lear [2] and Gottlieb [3] algorithms) and formulates a general method for defining normalization parameters used to generate normalized Legendre Polynomials and ALFs for any algorithm. A treatment of the conventional formulation of the gravitational potential and acceleration is also provided, in addition to a brief overview of the philosophical differences between the three known singularity-free algorithms
Overwintering Locations, Migrations, and Fidelity of Radio-Tagged Dolly Varden in the Hulahula River, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, 2007–09
Essential overwintering habitats for anadromous Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma on Alaska’s North Slope appear to be limited to a small number of perennial springs, primarily in eastern Brooks Range drainages. Because future petrochemical development in the region continues to be a possibility, and development would require large quantities of freshwater, we sought to identify and document the overwintering areas used by Dolly Varden in the Hulahula River, eastern Brooks Range. In August 2007, we implanted 52 Dolly Varden with multi-year radio transmitters at a known overwintering area in the lower Hulahula River. Other wintering areas were located during 11 aerial surveys conducted over the next 2.5 years. A stationary receiver located in the lower Hulahula River provided migration timing information. Radio-tagged Dolly Varden used four discrete areas with perennial springs for overwintering in the Hulahula River drainage. The springs, totaling approximately 12 km in stream length, were located between river km 40 and 105. Radio-tagged Dolly Varden migrated downstream on their way to the Beaufort Sea in early June. Most tagged fish known to have survived the summer at sea returned to the Hulahula River during late July and August, but seven fish overwintered in other North Slope drainages. Within the Hulahula River drainage, 15 fish overwintered in more than one area during the three winters of the project, but only the four identified perennial spring areas were used. These data clearly indicate that the perennial springs in the Hulahula River are essential overwintering habitats for Dolly Varden.Les aires de concentration hivernales essentielles du Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma anadrome sur la North Slope de l’Alaska semblent limitées à un petit nombre de sources pérennes, principalement dans les bassins hydrographiques de l’est de la chaîne de Brooks. Puisqu’il est toujours possible qu’il y ait des aménagements pétrochimiques dans la région et que ceux-ci demanderaient de grandes quantités d’eau douce, nous avons tâché de déterminer les aires de concentration hivernales du Dolly Varden dans la rivière Hulahula faisant partie de l’est de la chaîne de Brooks, et nous les avons répertoriées. En août 2007, nous avons installé des émetteurs radio pluriannuels sur 52 poissons Dolly Varden dans une aire de concentration hivernale connue faisant partie de la rivière Hulahula inférieure. D’autres aires de concentration hivernales ont été repérées grâce à 11 levés aériens effectués au cours des 2,5 années qui ont suivi. Un récepteur fixe situé dans la rivière Hulahula inférieure nous a permis de relever des données sur le moment de la migration. Les Dolly Varden dotés d’émetteurs radio ont utilisé quatre sources discrètes où se trouvent des sources pérennes pour passer l’hiver, dans le bassin versant de la rivière Hulahula. Les sources, qui s’étendent sur une douzaine de kilomètres de longueur, étaient situées entre les kilomètres 40 et 105 de la rivière. Les Dolly Varden munis d’émetteurs radio ont migré en aval, en route vers la mer de Beaufort au début juin. La plupart des poissons avec émetteur ont survécu l’été à la mer et ont regagné la rivière Hulahula vers la fin de juillet et en août, mais sept poissons ont passé l’hiver dans d’autres bassins versants de la North Slope. Antibody responses to a Cryptosporidium parvum rCP15/60 vaccine
Cryptosporidium parvum is a zoonotic apicomplexa-protozoan pathogen that causes gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in mammals worldwide. The organism is transmitted by ingestion of oocysts, which are shed in faeces, and completes its lifecycle in a single host.^1^ C. parvum is ubiquitous on dairy operations worldwide and is one of the leading causes of diarrhoea in calves on these farms.^2,3^ Here, for the first time, we describe the antibody response in a large group of cows to a recombinant C. parvum oocyst surface protein (rCP15/60) vaccine and the antibody response in calves fed rCP15/60-immune colostrum produced by these vaccinated cows. Results of recent genotype surveys indicate that calves are the only major reservoir for C. parvum infections in humans.^4^ Human C. parvum infections are particularly prevalent and often fatal in neonates in developing countries and to immunocompromised people, such as AIDs patients.^4^ Drug therapy against cryptosporidiosis is limited and not wholly efficacious in either humans or calves^5^, making development of an effective vaccine of paramount importance. To date, there is no commercially available effective vaccine against C. parvum, although passive immunization utilizing different zoite surface (glyco)proteins has showed promise.^6-9^ All cows we vaccinated produced an antibody response to the rCP15/60 vaccine and the magnitude of response correlated strongly with the subsequent level of antibody in their colostrum. All calves fed rCP15/60-immune colostrum showed a dose-dependent absorption of antibody. Our results demonstrate that vaccination of cows with rCP15/60 successfully induces antibodies against CP15/60 in their serum and colostrum and that these antibodies are then well absorbed when fed to neonatal calves. With further research, this C. parvum vaccine may well be a practical method of conferring passive protection to calves against cryptosporidiosis. Furthermore, a specifically targeted immune-colostrum may be valuable in protection and treatment of immunocompromised human patients with cryptosporidiosis
The Detailed Star Formation History in the Spheroid, Outer Disk, and Tidal Stream of the Andromeda Galaxy
Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have
obtained deep optical images reaching stars well below the oldest main sequence
turnoff in the spheroid, tidal stream, and outer disk of the Andromeda Galaxy.
We have reconstructed the star formation history in these fields by comparing
their color-magnitude diagrams to a grid of isochrones calibrated to Galactic
globular clusters observed in the same bands. Each field exhibits an extended
star formation history, with many stars younger than 10 Gyr but few younger
than 4 Gyr. Considered together, the star counts, kinematics, and population
characteristics of the spheroid argue against some explanations for its
intermediate-age, metal-rich population, such as a significant contribution
from stars residing in the disk or a chance intersection with the stream's
orbit. Instead, it is likely that this population is intrinsic to the inner
spheroid, whose highly-disturbed structure is clearly distinct from the
pressure-supported metal-poor halo that dominates farther from the galaxy's
center. The stream and spheroid populations are similar, but not identical,
with the stream's mean age being ~1 Gyr younger; this similarity suggests that
the inner spheroid is largely polluted by material stripped from either the
stream's progenitor or similar objects. The disk population is considerably
younger and more metal-rich than the stream and spheroid populations, but not
as young as the thin disk population of the solar neighborhood; instead, the
outer disk of Andromeda is dominated by stars of age 4 - 8 Gyr, resembling the
Milky Way's thick disk. The disk data are inconsistent with a population
dominated by ages older than 10 Gyr, and in fact do not require any stars older

Extracellular Calcium Modulates Actions of Orthosteric and Allosteric Ligands on Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 1alpha
SUMMARY: Metabotropic glutamate receptor 1α (mGluR1α), a member of the family C G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), is emerging as a potential drug target for various disorders including chronic neuronal degenerative diseases. In addition to being activated by glutamate, mGluR1α is also modulated by extracellular Ca2+. However, the underlying mechanism is unknown. Moreover, it has long been challenging to develop receptor-specific agonists due to homologies within the mGluR family, and the Ca2+-binding site(s) on mGluR1α may provide an opportunity for receptor-selective targeting by therapeutics. In the present study, we show that our previously predicted Ca2+-binding site in the hinge region of mGluR1α is adjacent to the site where orthosteric agonists and antagonists bind on the extracellular domain of the receptor. Moreover, we have found that extracellular Ca2+ enhances mGluR1α-mediated intracellular Ca2+ responses evoked by the orthosteric agonist, L-quisqualate. Conversely, extracellular Ca2+ diminishes the inhibitory effect of the mGluR1α orthosteric antagonist, (s)-MCPG. In addition, selective positive (Ro 67-4853) and negative (CPCCOEt) allosteric modulators of mGluR1α potentiate and inhibit responses to extracellular Ca2+, respectively, in a manner similar to their effects on the response of mGluR1α to glutamate. Mutations at residues predicted to be involved in Ca2+-binding, including E325I, have significant effects on the modulation of responses to the orthosteric agonist, L-quisqualate, and the allosteric modulator Ro 67-4853 by extracellular Ca2+. These studies reveal that binding of extracellular Ca2+ to the predicted Ca2+-binding site in the ECD of mGluR1α modulates not only glutamate-evoked signaling but also the actions of both orthosteric ligands and allosteric modulators on mGluR1α
The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network
The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network is a national network recently established to focus on developing new interventions and disseminating and translating proven interventions into practice to reduce cancer burden and disparities, especially among minority and medically underserved populations. Jointly funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute, the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network consists of sites administered through Prevention Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The five sites are located in Kentucky, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, Washington State, and West Virginia. The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network's intervention areas include primary prevention of cancer through healthy eating, physical activity, sun avoidance, tobacco control, and early detection of cancer through screening. The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network uses the methods of community-based participatory research and seeks to build on the cancer-relevant systematic reviews of the Guide to Community Preventive Services. Initial foci for the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network's research work groups include projects to increase screening for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers; to promote informed decision making for prostate cancer screening; and to validate educational materials developed for low-literacy populations
