Preference for Managerial Boundary Setting in Relation to Empowerment: Adding Clarity to the Role of Boundaries
This study explores the role of manager and employee preference for managerial boundary setting in empowerment. Research has shown a clear relationship between managers’ empowerment practices and employee psychological empowerment, but confusion persists in the empowerment literature about the role played by boundaries in creating empowerment. We add clarity to the role of boundary setting by considering how the individual difference variable of manager and employee preference for managerial boundary setting impacts empowerment. Results indicate that higher preference for managerial boundary setting was associated with greater utilization of empowerment practices by managers and with greater psychological empowerment of employees. For managers there was a positively-accelerating quadratic relationship between preference for managerial boundary setting and empowerment practices. We also confirm the positive relationship between managers’ empowerment practices and employee psychological empowerment, and we found that employee preference for boundary setting did not moderate this relationship, except in the model for competence

Inelastic X-ray scattering study of the collective dynamics in liquid sodium
Inelastic X-ray scattering data have been collected for liquid sodium at
T=390 K, i.e. slightly above the melting point. Owing to the very high
instrumental resolution, pushed up to 1.5 meV, it has been possible to
determine accurately the dynamic structure factor, , in a wide
wavevector range, nm, and to investigate on the dynamical
processes underlying the collective dynamics. A detailed analysis of the
lineshape of , similarly to other liquid metals, reveals the
co-existence of two different relaxation processes with slow and fast
characteristic timescales respectively. The present data lead to the conclusion
that: i) the picture of the relaxation mechanism based on a simple viscoelastic
model fails; ii) although the comparison with other liquid metals reveals
similar behavior, the data do not exhibit an exact scaling law as the principle

The Effect of Race and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on Long-Term Survival after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a known predictor of decreased long-term survival after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Differences in survival by race have not been examined.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of CABG patients between 2002 and 2011. Long-term survival was compared in patients with and without COPD and stratified by race. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed using a Cox regression model.
Results: A total of 984 (20%) patients had COPD (black n = 182; white n = 802) at the time of CABG (N = 4,801). The median follow-up for study participants was 4.4 years. COPD was observed to be a statistically significant predictor of decreased survival independent of race following CABG (no COPD: HR = 1.0; white COPD: adjusted HR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.7–2.3; black COPD: adjusted HR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.1–2.2).
Conclusion: Contrary to the expected increased risk of mortality among black COPD patients in the general population, a similar survival disadvantage was not observed in our CABG population
Monoamine Oxidase is a Major Determinant of Redox Balance in Human Atrial Myocardium and is Associated With Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation
BACKGROUND:
Onset of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common and costly complication of heart surgery despite major improvements in surgical technique and quality of patient care. The etiology of POAF, and the ability of clinicians to identify and therapeutically target high-risk patients, remains elusive.
METHODS AND RESULTS:
Myocardial tissue dissected from right atrial appendage (RAA) was obtained from 244 patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation from multiple sources was assessed in this tissue, along with total glutathione (GSHt) and its related enzymes GSH-peroxidase (GPx) and GSH-reductase (GR). Monoamine oxidase (MAO) and NADPH oxidase were observed to generate ROS at rates 10-fold greater than intact, coupled mitochondria. POAF risk was significantly associated with MAO activity (Quartile 1 [Q1]: adjusted relative risk [ARR]=1.0; Q2: ARR=1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.84 to 4.0; Q3: ARR=2.1, 95% CI=0.99 to 4.3; Q4: ARR=3.8, 95% CI=1.9 to 7.5; adjusted Ptrend=0.009). In contrast, myocardial GSHt was inversely associated with POAF (Quartile 1 [Q1]: adjusted relative risk [ARR]=1.0; Q2: ARR=0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.60 to 1.4; Q3: ARR=0.62, 95% CI=0.36 to 1.1; Q4: ARR=0.56, 95% CI=0.34 to 0.93; adjusted Ptrend=0.014). GPx also was significantly associated with POAF; however, a linear trend for risk was not observed across increasing levels of the enzyme. GR was not associated with POAF risk.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results show that MAO is an important determinant of redox balance in human atrial myocardium, and that this enzyme, in addition to GSHt and GPx, is associated with an increased risk for POAF. Further investigation is needed to validate MAO as a predictive biomarker for POAF, and to explore this enzyme's potential role in arrhythmogenesis
Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the one-body density matrix and excitation energies of silicon
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques are used to calculate the one-body
density matrix and excitation energies for the valence electrons of bulk
silicon. The one-body density matrix and energies are obtained from a
Slater-Jastrow wave function with a determinant of local density approximation
(LDA) orbitals. The QMC density matrix evaluated in a basis of LDA orbitals is
strongly diagonally dominant. The natural orbitals obtained by diagonalizing
the QMC density matrix resemble the LDA orbitals very closely. Replacing the
determinant of LDA orbitals in the wave function by a determinant of natural
orbitals makes no significant difference to the quality of the wave function's
nodal surface, leaving the diffusion Monte Carlo energy unchanged. The Extended
Koopmans' Theorem for correlated wave functions is used to calculate excitation
energies for silicon, which are in reasonable agreement with the available
experimental data. A diagonal approximation to the theorem, evaluated in the
basis of LDA orbitals, works quite well for both the quasihole and
quasielectron states. We have found that this approximation has an advantageous
scaling with system size, allowing more efficient studies of larger systems.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Multiple self-reported concussions are more prevalent in athletes with ADHD and learning disability
Objective: We evaluated how attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD) are associated with concussion history and performance on standard concussion assessment measures. Based on previous reports that developmental disorders are associated with increased injury proneness and poorer cognitive performance, we anticipated that ADHD and LD would be associated with increased history of concussion and poorer baseline performance on assessment measures. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Clinical research center. Participants: The study sample aggregated data from two separate projects: the National Collegiate Athletic Association Concussion Study and Project Sideline. Interventions: We analyzed preseason baseline data from 8056 high school and collegiate athletes (predominantly male football players) enrolled in prior studies of sport-related concussion. Main Outcome Measures: Measures included demographic/health history, symptoms, and cognitive performance. Results: Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and LD were associated with 2.93 and 2.08 times the prevalence, respectively, of 3+ historical concussions (for comorbid ADHD/LD the prevalence ratio was 3.38). In players without histories of concussion, individuals with ADHD reported more baseline symptoms, and ADHD and LD were associated with poorer performance on baseline cognitive tests. Interactive effects were present between ADHD/LD status and concussion history for self-reported symptoms. Conclusions: Neurodevelopmental disorders and concussion history should be jointly considered in evaluating concussed players. Clinical Relevance: Clinical judgments of self-reported symptoms and cognitive performance should be adjusted based on athletes' individual preinjury baselines or comparison with appropriate normative samples
